Re: Optimal drone squad size ?

It depends on scenario and what you are using them for. If your scenario has classic kill points then small units are a liability - it is better to have larger units and find ways (e.g. Aun'Va) to mitigate the problems with that. If there are no kill points or it is power level based then drone squa...

Re: 2000 points competitive tournament list

Can't deny the brutal efficiency of that list. With AM in the ascendency I can see why the massed missile pod commanders are so valuable. It would be interesting to hear how that game went because just from looking at the list it almost looks designed to blow a hole in the units (probably mortar tea...

Re: Crazy hoard tau 2k points

I think this list archetype has real potential, although I do feel you really need to commit to it. One of the keys to this is to neuter the killing power of a lot of the bigger guns in the game by giving them no targets at all with multiple wounds for their high damage to do work on. The Hammerhead...

Re: Tidehunter Contingent: Judgement: 2000pt ITC List

I tend to find the Hammerhead a little under-gunned. If you can find some suitable parts and do not mind kit-bashing (or have access to the originals somehow) the Forgeworld turrets can IMO give a better firepower balance for our tanks. Longstrike - Railgun Hammerhead 2 x HYMP Hammerhead 2 x HYMP Fe...

Re: Kroot Carnivores article - early preview

Yeah, no. Hitting like a Marine without any proper melee weapon or a lot of attacks is nothing worth mentioning. Against GEQ you'd do about 2 unsaved wounds if you manage to get 10 Kroot to attack (remember that they die like flies). At the numbers you'd normally see GEQ units 2 dead doesn't mean m...

Honestly; no. Trying to re-set the whole game to the points efficiency of AM would almost certainly be a mistake. AM need fixing.

Re: Fire warriors vs guardsmen are they too cheap?

Well it could maybe help against Conscript spam (though I'm not so sure about that either) but then you'd have spend a lot of points to 'counter' one specific list while having something useless against CSM or C:SM etc. It's not like we are good enough to afford spending a few hundred points to cou...

Re: Fire warriors vs guardsmen are they too cheap?

Sniper drones are so important vs guard because the characters make the army if can stop the orders coming through it halves the firepower of guardsmen, if the Commander has a squad with him to take bullets you can focus some firewarrior shooting on them as no protection using character status then...

Re: Kroot Carnivores article - early preview

I have been really surprised by the effectiveness of a few kroot squads when I brought them. I've been using them in 3 squads of 10 with either a shaper or hoverdrone ethereal. They offer amazing flank coverage and are cheap enough to throw around into whatever is coming your way. The shaper is rea...

Re: Why are the Krootox and Shapers uncompetitive?

Krootox are far from terrible but nor are they the best option in the codex so with several competing options that are better overall they can not really be considered competitive. The real problem with Krootox is not their statline and points cost so much as the Cavalry type - this obstructs nearly...

Re: Screening units discussion

Nah not the entire table, just big pieces of terrain. It's really not that abstract to be honest. We have one or two of such "forests" in my group as well and we used to have such terrain in our flgs too back when I still went there to play. Whatever dude; it is utterly specific to your g...

Re: Screening units discussion

If even a single model is out of terrain the whole unit does not benefit. So those terrain pieces would all have to be spaced 2" apart or less. At which point i think you have declared the entire table to be terrain, which is fine but honestly is not anything I have seen in normal games.

Re: Screening units discussion

Yes that breakdown might work better.

I would not bother with mentioning cover saves on screening units, their job is to spread out across the table not to clump up together in cover. The new rules on cover mean that a screening unit will hardly ever benefit while doing their job.

Beyond the fringe

So with a new set of rules and all my old images getting eaten by changes to hosting policies I think it may be time to launch into a new project log. My project to launch into newhammer will be themed on D'yanoi Sept. The concept will be of a small Cadre put together to go deep into uncontrolled sp...

Re: Forgeworld Hammerhead variant turrets

Well I wasn't sure whether to post it in General Discussion or here so if it's the wrong place, just move it. :P So I started getting somewhat interested in the Forgeworld Hammerhead options since those are just simple weapon swaps instead of whole models which I'm more content with (for some reaso...

Re: Screening units discussion

I feel like Kroot are at least better for screening than Fire Warriors or Pathfinders. There's some weird cognitive dissonance going on with using a unit that's supposed to be screened instead as a screening unit! I know what you mean but I am seriously considering pathfinders for the job. It is no...

Re: Screening units discussion

Screening units are so important in new warhammer that we really should try to put together a decent resource for players new to the edition or new to Tau. If I were to take an initial try at this I would probably break down the options a little into categories. So as an example without all the pros...

Re: Kroot Carnivores article - early preview

My Kroot Carnivores are the running joke of my gaming group - with 'running' being the operative word. I have lost the entire unit to morale failure (7E) and battle shock (8E) in a high proportion of games (probably approaching 50%). In some ways that is no surprise - they are a screening unit and ...
