Re: Upcoming T'au Codex

imo, tau need to hit on a 3+ normally with a reward for the markerlights giving you a 2+ or erasing a penalties for heavy movement or assault advancing modifiers to be competitive. We have very little melee ability, so we need to keep our mobility. Even the guard has bullgryns who are just about be...

Re: Upcoming T'au Codex

ATS is actually bad if you have to trade a weapon for it, like in the crisis suits. I don't blame the ATS there, I blame the Crisis Suit. Then again I don't take crisis suits, if I'm going to take an XV8 platform 9 times out of 10 it will be a counts-as Commander. I almost always take ATS on stealt...

Re: Upcoming T'au Codex

Personal wishlist suggestion:

Give Orca Dropships the Valkyrie assault rules, so that we had a way to deliver suits into lines at high points where it is now pretty much impossible. It would also make Orca invaluable at high points, but fairly useless at low.

Re: Follow-Up: Homing Beacons and Fusion Commanders

My personal feeling is that for the points I would rather just have another commander. In honesty that's all my competitive tau lists have really devolved to. Commanders with Pathfinders, and Drones+CFB or Yvahra as needed. I find that at sub 2000 points it is exceptionally potent, but at larger poi...

Re: Dealing with Custodes?

If you can pop both land raiders turn one before he even moves (And this is very very doable given he won't have much of a screen) you win turn one. This is a good point- there's just no way that an all-Custodes army could bring screening units. Fire away! However, those Land Raider have 5++, do do...

Re: Dealing with Custodes?

Quad Fusion Commander (QFC). This opponent just screams QFC. Add some gun drones in for good measure with a coldstar acting as the DC Cady. Take some pathfinders for markerlight support and to ensure all your suits can drop. But, again, QFC. Like, if someone is bringing their competitive stuff, you ...

Re: How to make Pulse Carbines viable for Fire Warriors

Probably better to put this in general discussion, rather than Tactics. As you stated, under the SQ the Carbine is pretty much useless; it is only better than the rifle between ranges 15-18" which is pitiful. Re improving it for the future... sure. But tbh I feel they have been superseded by br...

Re: Optimal hammerhead loadouts?

Of the forgeworld hammerheads, the HYMP seems to be the only good one (pretty much turning the tank into a tough broadside). Re: the SMS v drones. Take Drones, except on Longstrike, who can buff the SMS effectively, so you'll want to be firing it more. Re: Ion v Railgun I honestly don't know. I have...

Re: 4 FB or 3 FB and Multi-tracker

Another difference is 3 shots are more likely to do less damage at things with invulnerable saves. Add in the option for your opponent to use a command reroll if the invulnerable shield is high, can make the multitracker even worse than on paper. It's true that I haven't calculated the distribution...

Re: 4 FB or 3 FB and Multi-tracker

My big problem is, have you ever fired your Fusion Commander at a target that didn't have at least one Markerlight hit on it? Re-rolling ones is so easy to get, why waste a precious battlesuit hardpoint on it? Often; I sometimes take lists with 7+ QFCs. In these situations they will be firing at up...

Re: The Firesight Warlord

Fairly sure that you can only take warlord traits on HQ choices. I suspect the same goes for the relics, but have no rule to back that up.

4 FB or 3 FB and Multi-tracker

I have seen a few lists floating around that take 3 FB and a multi-tracker instead of 4 FB. On paper this doesn't seem optimal from an offensive perspective, but may help to get bodies on the field. For the sake of this analysis, lets assume that neither has any markerlight support. QFC = 160pts and...

Re: Long range or medium Range ?

Medium/short range every time. If you are having problems with Melta and Plasma, bring drones (like 50+), in tandem with other things to take advantage of character targeting special rules. Tau have a very small, very specific subset of units that are great. Everything else in our codex is usable, b...

Re: Aun’Shi in 8th Ed

If you compare Aun'Shi(68 pts) to a stock ethereal(45 pts), you'll see that he's actually a competitive option. For 23 points you get a 4+ invulnerable save, and the option to buff up his attack or defense in melee. Basically he's decent in any list where you would bring an ethereal anyway. I agree...

Re: Alaitoc Counters

I have a friend that plays Eldar a lot and I have learned one thing that I haven't seen mentioned, and its the Eldar psychic phase. Its brutal, think of taking ~5d3 mortal wounds, sometimes becoming d6, every psychic phase. 3 smites + executioner (d3 mortal wounds, and if it kills another d3, bye b...

Re: Competitive list utilizing new CA rules. Been winning games with it.

Cool list! Two questions: 1) How have the Vespid gone? On paper they seem alright but I have never gotten around to taking any. 2) I love hazards; they are easily my favourite unit in the Tau codex. But I felt they weren't amazing in this edition. How do you find they fair compared to Burst Cannon C...

Re: How to deal with Nids?

In all honesty, nids are really our ideal opponent I feel in this edition, because they are countered by our good units, on top of the fact our good units are good. So every list is going to look something like: QFC (1-4) Coldstar (Warlord to fly around grabbing objectives and killing his screening ...

Re: Chapter Approved Leaks Discussion

Perhaps we are coming at this from different perspectives. I can see two. First, I like my army to win now and then. I don't get fun from being curbstomped. It makes me feel bad for the work I put into painting them and the time I put into making them look great. I want to have a chance. We don't h...
