Re: Let's talk about the Sun Shark

The bomb is best against heavy single-wound infantry in larger squads, ideally 10 (or 10+) With the ions and missiles added in, you're looking at killing maybe two-thirds of them. This is enough to make them much less effective and probably force a morale check. Failing that, aim to bomb any infantr...

Re: Let's talk about the Sun Shark

It really depends on what you can bomb. If you're bombing big squads of MEQs it'll earn its points back fast. If you get a markerlight hit or three on the enemy (and you're out of rapid fire range) overcharging with the drones could be a great advantage. Not sure about detaching the drones, though. ...

Re: Breachers are still good

Well the added protection is just one factor, mobility is very important, too. I feel it's hard to think 'what would the enemy do to counter this' so I think 'what would I do to counter this' In this case, against a bunch of footslogging breachers I'd use my mobile units to dance around shooting the...

Re: What happens to the attached gun drones if a devilfish dies?

Secondary question:
When a vehicle dies without exploding, you check if any passengers die.
If the vehicle also explodes, do those disembarking passengers take more wounds from the explosion?

Re: What happens to the attached gun drones if a devilfish dies?

True, the rule says they are treated as being embarked, so I'm going to treat them like passengers.
Man, us tau have a lot of available kill points. I hope that doesn't end up being a big concern for me..

Re: Breachers are still good

Question on the devilfish, Would the points be better spent on more breachers? A devilfish with SMS is almost the same cost as 2 breacher teams of 10. I know it sounds like a nid or ork tactic, but you may be able to get more breachers into range with a large horde of them... unless im missing some...

What happens to the attached gun drones if a devilfish dies?

99% sure on this, but just want to double-check. When a devilfish (or other vehicle) dies, what happens to the drones? Are they just removed as part of the vehicle, without giving away additional kill points? Can you choose to disembark them as you would passengers, rolling to see if they take damage?

Re: Pathfinder Drones - Look better on paper?

There's no real downside to taking two squads, is there? My goal was survivability. My opponent would have to split fire to try and wipe out both squads. If he was able to inflict high casualties and my morale roll was high I could lose 11 models in one turn. This does not prevent that with absolut...

Re: 1000 point vs nids

So if you give the razorshark a missile pod it gets 6 strength 7 shots. If you don't upgrade the sunshark you get 6 strength 7 shots (plus 4 extra in rapid fire range!), a markerlight and the pretty awesome pulse bombs ability, that deals mortal wounds to infantry on a 4+ when you fly over them With...

Re: 1000 point vs nids

I may be missing something but, especially after the recent faq, isn't the sunshark much, much, much better than the razorshark, for about 20pts more? Now that the sunshark's drones have two ion rifles each they vastly outperform the quad ion turret (they fire 8 shots in rapid fire range and are mo...

Re: Pathfinder Drones - Look better on paper?

My play style with PFs is to secure them In cover towards my rear to pull double duty as Deepstrike bubble denial and Markerlight support. Investing more points in my backfield protection lines and Marker light support takes away from my forward objective taking MEQ killing units. In my game this w...

Re: New 8th FAQ

Ye, before they fixed it in FAQ, index said each drone has only 1 ion rifle... Also I'm kinda wierded out by the Sunshark wargear option to take additional missile pod, without any downside (other than paying pts) like changing it for something else... I don't own the model so I didn't dig into it,...

Re: Making a Brigade

Stick to 7CP (Battalion and Outrider + Battleforged) This sounds about right. Unless you're taking 3 heavy support units anyway, it's better to have a great list with 7cp than a compromised list with 9. Obviously a supreme command detachment is worth considering too, if you've got darkstrider and c...

Re: Making a Brigade

Yeah, not enough ap (or damage) to take down most characters. Better off trying to position a fusion or cyclic ion commander at just the right angle to shoot it.

And it's not like we're lacking for S5 ap0 shots round here!

Re: Droneport and pathfinders

I didn't think they had to detach to get bs2+, I thought they had to remain attached to get that bonus (which would make a lot more sense, really - like darkstrider's assisting in shooting). What a strange rule! And I obviously need to read my codex more carefully.. I like the rail rifles being kept...

Re: Pathfinder Drones - Look better on paper?

Drones are no good in small units - with the exception of the two shield drones attached to deep-striking commanders. Otherwise, try to avoid units of two where you can help it, they're a really easy kill for first blood. If you're taking crisis suits, bring the full 6. If you want drones anywhere e...

Re: Pathfinder Drones - Look better on paper?

In a couple of games, one against SM and another against Necrons, I took two 5 man pathfinder teams, each with a pulse accelerator drone, and then embeded each of them within 2 Strike Teams at opposite ends of the table to pincer my opponent. The drones simply gave up kill points as each was target...
