Re: Shield Drone Barrier

Not that i've built a list around this idea, but shield drones with an ethereal makes an excellent roadblock unit for stopping those monstrous creatures that like to get in close with us... I had brought in a missile pod crisis team with 3 markers and 3 shields, and a dreadknight got in close. to ke...

Re: Devilfish & Breacher Tactics

I liken breachers in a devilfish as the new FoF, except instead of moving and shooting for sustained damage over time, they excel as a Mont'ka unit. they shut down most monstrous creatures and MEq squads in one firing turn, at risk of exposure.

Re: Tau Barrage Madness (Novel or viable?)

This idea would be better in groups of the traditional 3 rather than the excessive 9... piles enough wounds on MEq's to overwhelm the power armor, but doesnt cross over into overkill against the typical 10 man units and has enough redundancy to cover the occasional barn-door-missing wideshots.

Re: Markerlights and the Stormsurge

This idea has been tried many times in the previous editions by way of target locks in crisis suits squads. It was never legal then and it hasn't changed since then. Marker light bonuses may only be claimed by a unit for weapons targeting the unit that has the marker light tokens. On the flip side, ...

Re: New to Tau looking for critique/advice on 1850 pt list

Hammerheads are very lackluster compared to Broadsides in terms of shot output. Considering damage against light armor and single target threats, there's no competition. The often overlooked advantage however, is the access to templates on a heavily armored unit. Objectively speaking, the Ion Cannon...

Re: A fresh start

Agreed, breachers are highly reliant on their transport for getting into effective firing range, whereas pulse rifles are almost always going to be able to hit their target immediately. If you're going with no vehicles, you'll want the high range option. Crisis suits will likely be the staple of you...

Re: Who Uses Kroot?

most lists will use them just fine, if for no other reason than their cheap tactical flexibility. even the token minimized squad still brings out flanking and roughly equivalent anti infantry firepower as a full tactical marine squad for half the cost. that's nothing to sneeze at, especially when it...

I would also consider pulse blaster options for the fire blade, as well as a crisis variant scaled up appropriately.

Re: So, uh, I think Fire warriors get two attacks in melee

Am I to assume that the train of thought follows that if a model chucks grenades in close combat without pulling the pin, it counts as a melee weapon, and that if you have 2 such weapons, you get a bonus throw using base stats? That's quite the roundabout way of doing it... and quite silly. you are ...

Re: Winning Without the Riptide Wing

Gonna have to agree to disagree here. As powerful and durable as the riptide is, crisis suits just put out more damage point for point than the riptide. I'm not bashing it at all, its a solid choice, and it's much harder to remove than crisis suits, but its not the answer to everything people take i...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

If we're talking naked compulsory choices, i'd recommend the kroot instead of the strike squad. on top of having more wounds to spread around, you're also going to be able to infiltrate, letting you avoid the worst of the threats with them. Also, the choice of CDFS matters only if you don't destroy ...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

The kill points mission is legitimately my biggest nightmare when it comes to this list, not going to deny that. when your opponent can shift his mentality from "kill the biggest thing possible" each turn towards "kill as many little things as possible" instead, this list tends t...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

Disclaimer, I am not proposing this list as the perfect God tier list that must be played and can't be beat. I am not twisting scenarios or making skewed assumptions to make this argument for monats work. I am simply putting out the advantages and disadvantages of the setup, and only answering how t...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

I’m going to try and avoid ridiculous arguments, but I will answer honestly all the questions you posed. Here's the typical list I run: 1850 Tau Empire. Hunter cadre: Commander (160 pts) 2 fusion blasters Flamer, EWO, iridium. Drone Controller, Neuroweb System Jammer Riptide (225 pts) Ion accelerato...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

Single model units that have PA stat lines do not have staying power, especially with how prevalent AP2 is in the meta. The difference between a Monat and any other MSU is that the MSU actually has wounds to spare. The Monat has two without drone supplements. If your opponent is wasting 400-500 pts...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

The point on staying power works both ways. against MSU lists, it is very much a meat grinder for both sides, but against death star lists, the monat list excels. it forces the opponent to split up assets of the deathstar or chase single suits, both of which are very undesirable for their strategy. ...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

It excels when you consider Coordinated Firepower, which comes stock with fulfilling the basic Hunter Contingent detachment requirements. The initial weaknesses of markerlight inefficiency is negated by the fact that this rule lets you focus fire and gain a free +1 BS for doing so with at least 3 di...

Re: Monat the 3rd Tau Art of War

The beautiful thing about monat based armies is that you field units that your opponents armies are typically overequiped to handle, so i would not give up that advantage by making them cost more. Consider the average monat with 2 weapons is 50-60 points, the average full squad of marines is around ...
