Re: The All-Flamer XV8: Tactics Discussion

Well, lets do the math, it's really not difficult in this case. Bodyguards with ATS => 9 * 0.33 * 0.66 * 0.5 = 1 unsaved wound against MEQ. Crisis suits w/o ATS => 7 * 0.33 * 0.66 * 0.33 = 0.5 unsaved wound against MEQ. I'm not going to bother factoring in re-rolling ones (which I guess comes from F...

Re: The All-Flamer XV8: Tactics Discussion

I have played Stealth Teams in 20+ games and have lost the entire squad turn 1 only once. And that took most of my opponents firepower + a lucky charge with Thunderhammer wielding unit (and that happened mostly a result of him having no other targets) I find that a 4 man team provides a good balance...

Re: Firebade volley rule double check

Embarked units are not on the table so they won't benefit from any auras, but the Attached Drones rule on the Devilfish (and other drone carrying vehicles) say that "the <vehicle> is considered equipped with the Drones' weapons". And it is a <Sept> unit, so yes the Fireblades aura would af...

Re: XV109 Y'vahra (any feedback?)

Yes, what Haechi said :D

Also, units that would actually do some damage after surviving overwatch, as tying it up is pointless. But I remembered Warptime and primarchs in the meantime, and that answers my question.

OFF-TOPIC: Why do people refer to the Y'vahra as a 'she'?

Re: Revisiting the Droneport

All of which is dependent on Tau tanks getting a big enough boost from the codex to make mechanised Tau competitive in the first place. I wanted to reply questioning how a competitive mech Tau list looks like until I read this :) But I agree, if mech Tau is good I can seen Droneports being good in ...

Re: XV109 Y'vahra (any feedback?)

I place 4-6 Shield Drones next to it out of LOS. Pathfinders or Coldstars are usually the ones that take the drones. Pathfinders can Vanguard away afterwards, and Coldstars can zip away wherever they want with their ridiculous movement. But I don't play against optimized tournament lists, so the amo...

Re: Revisiting the Droneport

Yeah, the Droneport's usefulness seems very dependent on your opponents list, what his ratio of anti-infantry vs anti-tank weapons is. If he overcompensates on the anti-tank side, more Pathfinders would be better, or vice versa. Against a TAC list, I would argue the Droneport has it's place. Denying...

Re: Revisiting the Droneport

I have tried a Droneport full of Pathfinders twice so far, with high success (when it comes to increasing the survivability of Pathfinders - debatable when considering other metrics). In both cases it was just 10 Pathfinders inside, as I believe the mere +1 BS for the Marker Drones (stackable with a...

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

Yeah, I have tried a brigade 2 - 3 times, and if I remember correctly, lost all games with it. It's not the Troop or FA or Elites, it's the damned Heavy Support. I consider the R'varna the only good heavy support options we currently have, but even that is a heavy points commitment, requires suppor...

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

Have you ever considered a brigade? You troops and FA slots can be taken up by FW and drones, cheap and play in a manner which you seem to enjoy. Yeah, I have tried a brigade 2 - 3 times, and if I remember correctly, lost all games with it. It's not the Troop or FA or Elites, it's the damned Heavy ...

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

And since there are six objectives in a Maelstrom mission, it's not that absurd to consider that an advancing team of fire warriors can get from one objective to another in a single turn. That has happened to me multiple times actually. I also think it's important to not underestimate the third mar...

Re: Shield drones. I'm totally confused.

I agree with Panzer on this. The most limiting factor is the "enemy attack" part. The rulebook uses 'attack' all the time, but doesn't say what exactly is an attack. Is Smite an attack? (I think yes) Is an enemy exploding vehicle an attack? (maybe yes) Is a friendly vehicle exploding an at...

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

Those two are not troops, have poor leadership, lack Photon grenades and in the case of hounds, cannot shoot (I am also hitting a problem of not owning enough drones, but that's my personal issue).

I was skeptical too. Try it in a couple of games.

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

But I want to move. I need to move. To job of min squads of Strikes isn't to shoot. Their shooting is negligible. Did you even read what I said? They take up space, hold objectives (Mealstorm of War style), inhibit enemy movement. Fast movement is important for those jobs. Therefore advancing. There...

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

My point that I almost always want to advance the backfield Strike Teams and fully utilize their ~9.5" movement and Rifles just don't get any shots then. The units start on the table spread out to maximum coherency maximizing no-deepstrike-zone coverage, which results them being in poor firing ...

Re: I'm replacing all my strike teams with breachers... on foot!

I have tried Breachers on foot in a couple of games (vs Space Marines) now. Honestly, I was rather skeptical it would work as desired, but I saw your posts both here and on Dakka and decided I should give it a try. I have mixed feelings about the tactic, but I think it can be refined. Cons: - I didn...

Re: XV109 Y'vahra (any feedback?)

Elite infantry, vehicles (flyers especially - autohits that deal 3 damage are nasty). Probably even thinning out hordes with the 3D6 flamer, but haven't fielded it against a horde army. In general, it kills stuff. The issue is keeping it alive long enough for it to make its points back. It is very m...

Re: New player

Since you usually don't put Flamers or Plasma Riffles on Commanders you have at least 18" range on your guns when you Manta Strike in. No need to be 9.1" away from you target. I actually dropped my commander on 9" so he could get the 'advantage' roll on his weapons. So I guess that's...
