Well my guys are a break away faction and not technically a Sept or Cadre of the Tau empire anymore so I'll post anyways. The history of my break away faction has been completely influenced on games and campaigns of the local club lol. The Defense Forces don't follow usual rules of course, as they are in system fleets that do not require to leave their respective solar systems and make up the obvious bulk of the Unity Coalitions naval assets as they own so few planets.
----------------------------------MASS FLUFF WARNINGS!!-------------------------------------
The Valaska Unity Coalition was a fairly routed Sept, T'au'Kidel, it had naval assets to defend a fairly strategically important world which had several archeological finds of possibly artifacts that helped explain much of the Tau's home system its history, along with information on the Horus Heresy, the ages of the Imperium of Man, this library explained much of the Galaxy.
The earth caste's discoveries warranted the T'au'Kidel to be further supplied new warships, their older ships were then subsidized amongst the Tau empire which allowed a fairly painless redistribution of ships to bolster the defense of such an important world.
Over the years T'au'Kidel came under attack from multiple foe's, their ability to overcome virtually any circumstance even though it had a fairly limited fire caste forces, its naval fleets abilities saved them more than a few times. Over the years the Fire Caste of T'au'Kidel was bolstered and quickly became a match of even the mighty T'au Sept, but this would soon be put to the test.
A large scale campaign by the Imperium found Kidel once again, Space Marines of the Dark Angels Chapter, and Imperial Guardsmen from the Cadian's regiments landed for their respective reasons, Tyranids from Leviathan awoke and approached the planet, bringing their number to bare, and the greenskin tide of White Scorpion orks touched planet fall. An Errant group of Eldar landed with their mysterious motifs as well as forces from the Craftworld Bel'tian. Chaos Undivided turned its eye on the library's secrets, and the Black Templar's to defend them.
The Naval battle ensued, and was quickly decided, the Tau forces were the obvious victor, holding claim over their own space and allowed them to drop forces effectively into enemy territories, the other navies were forced to avoid the fleets of each other and made dropping forces trickier and harder.
The T'au'Kidel Sept quickly mobilized, and over a long and arduous campaign came out as one of the three obvious victors, the Imperial Guard though now lay heavy claim to the planet of Kidel, the T'au'Kidel sept's claims ran deep and vast, heavily fortified followed by the Greenskin's Waaagh! Which now was halted in reinforcing their positions.
The Tyranids were all but annihilated by T'au'Kidel's forces, only gaining one indecisive victory, as they also ground Chaos to a halt and then pushed them back. The Dark Angels Chapter lost many battle brothers to pulse fire and an unshakable will, the Imperial Guard and the Tau forces only colliding once in a battle which held murderously heavy losses on both sides though the orcs proved troublesome and caused the retreat of the Tau Forces many times, they were ground against the Imperial Guards forces.
The Eldar faired possibly the worst against the Tau forces, the scrying of both Far seers proves obviously flawed as they exclusively attack together against the Tau forces, of which they being completely annihilated as the Tau forces barely loose a fire warrior.
The Black Templar forces only engage the T'au'Kidel sept being aids to the errant Eldar faction had no effect on the Tau forces and even less gains.
At the end of the Campaign the T'au sept itself replaced the T'au'Kidel sept under heavy objections and scrutiny by the T'au'Kidel sept. Being moved to one of the many Kroot held planets in the Perdous Rift, the sept quickly repainted itself to match its new surroundings and kept the imperial name, Kidel, as its sept title, soured and angered the Tau forces of the Kidel Sept were possibly only held back by the pleading of Ethereals leading the Sept and its vast dedicated fleet.
The sept immediately had friendly relations with the kroot of the world, who were also on edge on the Tau empire, and quickly became very accustomed with dealing with the Kroot Mercenaries directly, the Kroot themselves teaching the Tau various ways to survive and culture, the shift was on move from the Greater Good above all, to something unknown, the Ethereals were almost oblivious of their loosening control, but unrest was not enough to sway the Tau of Kidel.
On a scouting/scouring mission examining planets beyond the Perdus Rift, the Kidel fleet came under attack by an unknown race, the Kroot war sphere accompanying the fleet was severely damaged in the first moments of combat and the Emissary class ships supported by two Protector's was critically damaged, three Defender class ships were called into for support, as they arrived the unknown ships suddenly vanished suffering no losses.
The Kidel fleet then after doing self repairs moved to investigate the planet the ships supposedly came from, suddenly more ships appeared and assaulted the Tau fleet again, each ship being apparently individually crafted were easily recognizable as none of the previous group, quickly they harassed the weakened Emissary again, putting it in its same position as before, and critically damaging all three of the Defender class, the ships seemed to be showing signs of damage but then vanished. Abruptly the same battle group that engaged them before came in as the others vanished and seriously damaged both protectors, the Warsphere long since surrendered, finally the rest of the fleet would as well.
Now being contacted by several vocal dialects over common communication ranges, finally being greeted by Imperial Speach the Ethereal manning the Emissary craft replied. After extremely brief talks the unknown craft pulled themselves beside the Tau fleet, troop transports docked with the Tau Emissary ship, four tall, large, more beast than man figures stepped forward, penetrating yellow, green eyes, slender long tails and bodies covered in fine fur striped as if tattooed markings, wearing nothing but some tribal garb and holding far too sophisticated for their attire weapons, adorned blades of luminescent metals glowing an odd blue, and obvious ranged weaponry of the same substance.
They were silent, without a word, standing taller than an XV-25, they were intimidating and unmoved by the Ethereal's words of greeting, not even reacting in the slightest, eying down the honor guard of Fire Warriors. Finally after minutes of the Ethereal speaking, tirelessly, one of the figures stepped back, looking back into the darkness of the ship that brought them. Motioning silently as if a machine, towards the black abyss, suddenly emerging from the blackness came a being such as the others but his fur was as ebony as the darkness, eyes of glowing emerald and adorned with armor, yet still insufficient to cover most of his body, carrying a brilliant stave. Beside him a young Gue'la woman appeared, hair an orange as if fire, wearing elegant robes.
The following moments would change the Kidel Sept for all time, the years of unrest unraveling and an entire Sept and most of the Kroot from a planet suddenly dropping contact, the Dal'Yth Sept was mobilized to check what had happened, what they found was a world largely abandoned most of the Tau buildings and outposts were stripped clean, some completely dismantled and no signs of hostility, until the local offices were examined, the bodies of dozens of Ethereals were discovered, some from obvious battle wounds, others from starvation, locked within a room with rations that apparently had run out.
Though the Ethereals wrote many logs of the events that lead up to abandoned cities of tens of thousands of Tau, the Tau Empire never released the truth to the public, and ever since have been hunting the newly formed Valaska Unity Coalition. They've since returned to the planet Kidel, and are staging for another extended Campaign, and have been battling the Tau Empire's enemies, and the Tau Empire itself since, and has begun mass production of weapons and technologies, bolstered with the tactics and planning of the new, unknown race.

Not quite what I Was supposed to write, but I like being fluffy lol. I wanted to be original, and it didn't make sense to me why a break away faction would completely drop its production etc, so I made my own break away faction which founded itself worlds, set up production and development with Earth caste and such, many of which were.. "Acquired", I am constantly fighting against a new Tau player near me who is playing the simple run of the mill Tau so my matches match my fluff hehe.
Right now the Unity Coalition doesn't have access to Sky Ray's or Vespids, and like Farsight obviously they lack any Ethereals, though I do have models of the "Unknown" xeno's that are counts as, and am making a battlesuit to accommodate one as well.
Oh yeah, I'm a professional writer, so this all took my about 20 minutes to think up and then shape them through the games I play!
There IS such a thing as too many railguns
