The 47th Sa'taal Hunter Cadre contains but a small fraction of its former strength after being cut loose for several years by the Empire on the far side of the Damocles Gulf and left for dead, and survived by hopping from planet to planet replenishing supplies. Slowly rebuilding to its former strength after being saved from a deadly Imperial (Deathwatch) assault in the Kastorel system by forces of the Farsight Enclaves, the cadre is, along with the rest of Sa'taal sept, considered traitor to the Empire and the Greater Good, and is now aligned with the Enclaves. Currently serving alongside Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Farsight Enclaves forces in the Kastorel system in an ongoing campaign against the Ork and Chaos forces currently holding Kastorel-Novem, the encroaching Tyranid Hive Fleet (codenamed Maurice), and the Imperial forces attempting to retake the planet.
Sa'taal is a tiny, almost insignificant ball of ice on the opposite side of the Damocles Gulf from the rest of the Empire, with four bio-domes ringing the planetoid. Only 60 cadres were raised after its founding as a border outpost during the Third Sphere expansion. Besides their role as an outpost, Sa'taal was founded as a shipyard. The Air caste presence on Sa'taal is inordinately high in comparison to the other caste populations, and Sa'taal's vast navy is one of its primary strengths. During the course of the Damocles crusade, several regiments of Imperial Guard were integrated into Sa'taal's military, and still serve as auxiliaries. After the Crusade, it was determined by the High Council on T'au that Sa'taal was not worth spending additional resources to replenish and reinforce. The sept was abandoned (unbeknownst to its citizens) by the Council and left to perish, but has persevered.
The population of the sept-world itself can trace their ancestry back to Vior'la, but time spent in the blackness of space on an ice world has calmed the signature fiery disposition of Vior'lans somewhat, and denizens of Sa'taal are notable for their patience and cunning in war. Most Sa'taal commanders tend to prefer the Kauyon way of war, using fast-moving Crisis teams and light vehicles to draw the enemy into a killing field, whereupon previously set gunlines will spring the trap and make short work of the enemy. As such, Sa'taal cadres tend to be infantry-heavy, and upon promotion, many Shas either lead Fire Warrior teams or pilot vehicles rather than pilot a battlesuit. Sa'taal's cadres tend to be heavy in, and sometimes even led by, Fireblades. Synergy and force multipliers generally trump individually strong units in the Sa'taal military.
Reflected both in its ability to defend itself during the Damocles Crusade without much help from the Empire, and its ability to survive being cut off by the Council, Sa'taal's name roughly translates as "well-preserved."
