[Theme - Tactica] Orca Deployed Forces

Image
This has been floating in my head since my forces recovered a damaged Orca. Can an Orca transport an effective drop force? And at what point level? Can we call them ODF Teams? (Orca Deployed Forces)

I am going to keep adding to this as I think, from a tactic sense, it would be fun to know. My mobile assault force was always designed to be deploy-able from a Manta which offers a lot more choices for ground forces.

Image
FORGE WORLD: Tau Dropship as featured in the computer game Fire Warrior. Includes 24 seated Fire Warriors, 8 Drones, 6 Battlesuits, 1 Ethereal and 3 crew. Complete resin and plastic kit. Master model by Will Hayes.

The Numbers

EDIT: 57 models, up to 6 of which can be battle suits.
So what that might look like:
24 Firewarriors in seats + 10 gun drones in racks (that is double the current racks) + 6 Battlesuits (18 spots) + 1 Ethereal + 2 Firewarrior crew + 2 dudes some where. = 57 models. The air caste pilot does not get out much I imagine.

This leaves a lot of options if one "changes" the inside of the Orca to match what they want to deploy.

Battlesuits with JSJ: Limited to 6 total models and takes 3 slots per model.

XV88 space and Orca capability: Takes 5 slots and is not limited to 6 total models.

XV104 space and Orca capability - Possible, if inside modification was made. Probably use 75% of capacity. Might be sling loadable under an Orca.

ATT ODF Team Types:

FW XV9 modified Orca from APOC - Modified Orca with all of its capacity set to drop off XV9 teams to the front lines.

ODF Team - Stealth team deployment Model: 40K Meta
The role of this team is to recon and light tactical engagement of forward enemy forces.

1 Team leader:
- Ethereal, Fireblade, or Named infantry model (Darkstrider)
- for now: Ethereal
- Using the 2 Crew slots, take a Fireblade and a Shaper as Team leaders

4 - 6 Man Infantry teams
- Small light forces to cover the most ground
Option 1: Kroot team replaces 2 teams. 10 Kroot with 2 dogs, 2 6 man Firewarrior Teams

3 - 2 man special weapons Battlesuit teams, 2 teams with max drones.
- Each team is build to handle a situation.
- Death rain, Burning eye, and Fusion teams seem a good staple.

Farsight ODF - Ground assault/Recovery Model:
- You can take the entire Eight and sling load the O'vesa below for deployment. (this is a fluff deployment, for actual game play the 8 would be in the Orca and the O'vesa would Deepstrike)
6 XV8, 1 XV88, 1 X V104 so it would work. Can even load more models.

ODF Team "Whale of Fury": APOC Meta
- a Shas'Ui Nevar Tactic
- Rapid deploying strike group approach for objective seizing with the mind to play to the objectives. Use the 48 troop count max to take four full squads of Firewarriors. While it might seem like a good idea to throw some XV-8's in as well at the expense of Firewarriors, I feel they can deploy in better ways like Deep-strike and such and the transport is better served for our less mobile forces.
- Deploy a 'Whale of Furry' approach with four full squads of firewarriors boosted by an ethereal. The orca allows you to deploy all four squads at once and transport them all at once, basically taking the place of four Devilfish in a sturdy -flying- package. While your main forces engage this team can easily circumvent forward lines to deploy a hail of fire on back field objectives, or even rapid deploy into good defensible positions without having to expose a Devilfish formation to fire as it tried to get into position.
- UPDATE: this would be 4 full squads of Firewarriors + drones + Ethereal (Total 57 Models)

The "Defense Line Rush"
9-11 XV88s deployed and movable via Orca at a shifting 36"+ gap. Fly your stopping power to the perfect spot, leave with them when it get iffy. Upload and unload is 4 units, you have 4 units.

Conclusion
We need more ODF commanders, join your Tau ODF training team today
Think on it, we would love your thoughts and tactics.

I like this idea. A tactical insertion team sounds like lots of fun to play. Remoras would be my choice for a covert operation. They can run escort for the Orca, and can also be used as ground support, all without attracting too much attention thanks to their stealthy nature and small profile. They can also shoot fliers, just in case you run into one at 1000 points.
Failing that, piranhas could be a good support unit. Piranhas perform very well in low point games (and all other point games :P ) and can be fitted with Seekers to help out ground forces up against some heavier armour. They are economical, effective, and even fit in with the theme (somewhat)

Da Skyman - Really liked your idea, making more groups/builds for the Orca insertion. Like commander choices if you will. Will also be a lot of fun to play them with an Orca in APOC games.
- Updated Outline
- Added some data

- I will also be deploying these on Thursdays. I will try and post a battle report on how they do. Our group is VERY competitive so I am not promising solid Tau victories.

This Thursday I will deploy ODF Team 1 - Scout/Recon version

Vay,

I actually love the Orca model and have long been tempted to purchase one simply to have it.

This lead me, especially recently, to attempt to make a playable force using one. Fortunately/Unfortunately the Orca is a super heavy flyer and is only available in APOC games. This means we have plenty of room point wise.

I went the rapid deploying strike group approach for objective seizing with the mind to play to the objectives. I believe if I recall off the top of my head you can fit 48 normal sized models inside the Orca, which turns out to be four full squads of Firewarriors. While it might seem like a good idea to throw some XV-8's in as well at the expense of Firewarriors, I feel they can deploy in better ways like Deep-strike and such and the transport is better served for our less mobile forces.

Anyhow, the way I planned on using the Orca is to deploy a 'Whale of Furry' approach with four full squads of firewarriors boosted by an ethereal.

I am not sure what form of team you might call it, but you might consider this formation in your own APOC games and in this article.

OMG, "Whale of Fury"... I could type nothing more and this post was already worth it to me. I am adding this to a deployment team; ODF Team - "wWhale of Fury"... ROFL

I will post what I have it looking like before Thursdays game. It needs some TLC, and I have to rebuild/cast the engine parts for one side as they were probably why I got it so cheap on ebay.
As far as the model in normal games, I have been offering it up to the tables as terrain. Nothing cooler then getting into a last stand fire fight holding the Orca (which had my OBJ) from Nids. It looked glorious!

- Adding Whale of Fury, the answer to every problem.
- More talk on crew, and what you can get out of a Orca
- Thinking of making 2 tactica scales. One APOC and one normal game Meta

The Orca comes with all the models inside for "free," doesn't it? (They're included on top of the vessel itself, I mean.) Are these pre-assembled, or do they come with the standard sprues?

I do like the idea of an Orca swooping over the battlefield and spewing Fire Warriors onto something with an Ethereal. If only you could assign other fliers as escorts, so you could have them dramatically enter the battlefield as reinforcements.

(Also a teeny, tiny, somewhat petty nitpick - Orcas are actually dolphins. Sorry, I work in marine wildlife, just a little niggle is all.)

Yep, it comes with them. Every thing but the XV's and the drones is solid mold.

While of course we can use the Orca itself in Apocalypse, I think it's a real shame there's no "Orca plus the troops it contains" Apocalypse formation. (Instead we get "take three Riptides!", yawn).

I guess any list that fits the limitations of what can be carried in an Orca is valid enough.

There was an old formation for XV9s and a custom Orca, will post some of its data as I add to this.

This is a convenient thread, as I've noticed some things about the Orca and Manta entries that I find interesting (and I pseudo-verified my idea on FWs facebook page).

Broadsides can be taken without using the slots reserved for "battlesuits with the type jetpack infantry." Because 88s are just infantry, and the Orca and Manta have no qualms transporting bulky models of any type, they can be crammed in the same seats as Fire Warriors. I don't know the exact transport capacity of an Orca right now (at work), but I think we could transport two full teams (maybe with a PEN CDR) around the battlefield.

This could be useful in giving our Broadside teams the mobility to keep up with a mechanized and suit heavy army, and allows them some tactical maneuverability. Deploying XV88s for side and rear armor shots and, depending on the size of your apocalypse table, in range of both primary and secondary weapon systems.

Using them aggressively in this manner also opens up some interesting wargear options for them beyond EWOs and VTs. Being near the frontlines gives them a chance to use supporting fire - a CDS is great for twin-linked weapons on overwatch - and they might even make use of the defensive systems like stim injectors, and shield generators.

Essentially my proposal is not so different from a Fish of Fury or Whale (Porpoise?) of Fury, just with XV88s instead of fire warriors. I don't really know what to call it, though: Orcaside, Ship-of-the-Line, Man-of-War (Tau-of-War)?

Anyways, keep up the good work, I look forward to more ideas from the community.
