I'm loving the mental images...

The Y'Vahra dropping in to clear the Orca's LZ; then providing close support for embarkation / disembarkation. Once complete, it "Hulk jumps" away or to another designated LZ...

I bet there would be many jests from Kor pilots about Shas "trying to fly". :)

Shifting my strategies and pulling Orca assault back out on the Meta table.

1250

109 (300ish) Stim, Ewo
104 (300ish) ION EWO SKyfire
Orca (300ish)
4 FW teams and Ethereal (300ish)
Possible Pathfinders, cause they are getting dusty.

Other option:
Hammerheads and Skyrays on the ground and use the Orca as a D-fish replacement.

Looking for Table-field experience on what people are seeing work with Orca's
I have had a lot of luck playing with mine. I will update with how things progress

My first use of the Orca went very well, it's a damn good piece of transporting awesomesauce. If you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend it.

Shas'O'Kais Vay Nightblade

What an awesome post! :) Battle reports that look like actual after action reports, photos, modeling -- everything!
I wondered why I hadn't seen this post before and I wondered where it's been all my years on A.T.T. Then I noted you've been started this thread a few years back and so now I understand -- still awesome. :P

Was inspired to do a little translation work for you:

H’tsaya’shaii: ‘Winds of Fate’
Shone’nan: Nightblade

Let me know if these work for you, and if not then I'll have another go at it.

The TauMan is impressed!

You rock and thank you. I will use your masterful translations with great joy! I will post more soon, or if you want to see a battle report or tau model-action shot.

8th Edition Update:
- Waiting on FAQ to see if points change on ORCA. Orca is fueled and ready to deploy an infantry list.
--ODF Team "Whale of Fury" deployment model.
- Orca H’tsaya’shaii Running Whale of Fury - Remora Pattern

- Whale of Fury will now be "Manta Striking" for my forces on Taros. I need a WHALE STRIKE!
- Manta redeployed to southern pole for Orc incursion.
- Skies still under Tau control.

New fighter Pattern.
"Whale Remora Pattern" - Cold stars hiding on flanks of Orca. Orca alpha drops on enemy and Cold stars advance on key targets. Fireball V2 drops behind enemy lines. 3 Model start 80+ model finish.
-Pure Tau Joy

Wy would the FAQ change the point costs?

I mean, i carries like 4 devilfish, it costs like 4.
Even if it doesn't tank like 4, the sheer stupidity of units you cram into "one deployment" is stunning. you can fit your entire army into one "drop" if you play a crisis/stealth heavy list.
Just hope they can't pluck it out of the sky before you make your landing :P

They totally will. Every gun in their army trained on one, moderately durable target?

If you want to compare it properly, It carries like 5.4 Devilfish, costs like 3.2 not counting weapons or 2.9 including weapons(the firepower 1 orca vs 3 DF would be 8 S5 shots(36" range) + Missile pod vs. 36 S5 shots). The worst thing about it is that it tanks only like one and a half of DF, with T8, 14W, 4+ save and hard to hit (compared to T7, 12W, 3+ save). Assuming they'll shoot with multidamage, high AP weapons, the +2W probably won't make a big difference, +1T only matters with S7 or S8 weapons, worse save, the hard to hit is just about the only thing that makes it rly more durable, you might not even get to 50% more durability than a DF with some weapon profiles...

I would say on 99% they won't do anything with points cost. What they might do in FAQ is lower the 4+ save(srsly, 4+?), give it more wounds or give it back the option to carry seekers (It has seekers modeled on hull for crying out loud). Wouldn't expect anything else...

8th edition Orca:

1000 points, deployed roughly 60 models onto the field.
+ Got first turn with 1 team of pathfinders out and my Orca.
+ Orca can grab objectives.
+ Orca starts on the board.
+ Orca does not get shot, as a pile a of drones and strike teams draws a lot of fire.

+- Cover is barely worth grabbing.
+- Infantry only is a slug fest. Fun for both sides, but leave a lot of dead Tau on the field.
+- seems to be a good list option.

- Infantry only takes a lot of work to drop tanks or T7/8 2/3SV 12+wounds.
- Orca is not "tough", but it can take some hits.

With manta strike, 8th rules, and wild new meta evolution I think Orca strategy might take a few more goes to get it right. That said, it works now out of the box dropping two Battalions on your enemies face T1. Good Luck fellow Orca Commanders.
