Off topic section? Suggestion

Any chance of an off topic section? It would be cool to talk about stuff outside of 40k about a lot of subjects with members of the forum.

And a section for non tau forces. Like marines.

I was thinking a free anything goes forum. With No banned topics with the exception of illicit activities ,things that break the law, and pornography.

Why? . Well I would really like to talk about the korean missle crisis with people who study war and military tactics. Such as 40k players

Also differing perspectives from different people around the world.

Frankly the news here in Canada is scaring the hell out of everyone I know.

The off topic section could also be used to talk about happy things :/ Like music or the finer points of ascots or how to properly milk an otter.

After all we are a community of vastly diverse and interesting people. I for one would like to know what panzar teal and Nixon listen to. Or what shows you guys watch.

I know it's a long shot. If not how about a stickied single post under general for off topic. Anyways thanks for listening.

Lots love for you all and to your families.

Once upon a time there used to be an off-topic subforum, the Mess Hall (back when all the forums were explicitly named after sections of the ATT orbital). There was quite some fun had there, but eventually it got out of hand and had to be closed down.

There is however a sub-forum for non-Tau related 40k discussion, as well as topics regarding other Tabletop wargames, the Enemies and Alternate Systems subforum.

Could that not simply be fixed with a disclaimer? A little bit of volatility is healthy in building character and development, according to a Dr of psychology We shouldn't be afraid to go down that road.

As the great frank Zappa said. They are " just words"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8ISil7IHzxc

If your're not sure who zappa is I strongly suggest you check out his music the guy was a legend, and strangely a political genius. He spoke after Dee during the PRMC hearing vs Tipper Gore. Snider from twisted sister when the band was being targeted for offensive music back in the day.

The link above talks about the song "hot for teacher"

And here is Dee crushing the hearing like a champ https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&source=w ... OD4xbU2nov

The arguments and talking points in the two videos really encapsulates what I was trying to convey in my counter point.

From what I gather (this was all some years back before I was a mod) it was more than just volatile comments, the sheer volume of traffic it got simply began to overwhelm the admin team at the time.

You can try to petition for it to be brought back, but I'm not sure how likely it is for an off-topic section to make a return. On the other hand a lot has changed since then, so you never know...

The current community seems very mature and well adjusted.

What does everyone else think?

Mess Hall... Yeah no wonder that whole discussion went to hell :P
The name itself could easily subconsciously affect people on what they were writing about on that discussion.
Nvm about that now.

I would myself support such idea if it only would be somewhat easy to follow. I mean the discussion may get clogged up with multiple different dialog real fast, which would make it hard to follow a specific (off)topic. At which point the whole conversation might as well be moved to a private messaging this platform provides.

Also this kind of off-topic forum would easily get overwhelmed by peoples outraged reactions. And as far as I know others opinions is what exactly may trigger this. You never know about it until it's too late, and it will get messy no matter what.

After couple of years of occasional lurking on this forum and this some what half year experience as a member has showed me that there may still be hope for such discussion topic.

I am replying to this just because I was really surprised to see my username in your mentioned list of "interesting people", Knives. No doubt about Tael and Panzer being some amazing individuals but I'd barely call myself as "intresting" :D
Cheers!

I wouldn't mind it, if you could easily filter it from the portal page...

Lolz. :P. Nix. I was saying the forum was full of interesting people. Not you three specifically.

Your guys names we're just easy to remember. And was using your names as an example for a hypothetical about what music any given member might like.

Sorry you're not a sunbeam or special snowflake today.

Not that your not interesting.

I'm honored to be included in the list of people you're interested about but honestly, I wouldn't use the offtopic section at all. Never did on forums, never will do.
Frankly it would mostly result in spam for me because I usually just check all the new posts on the forum instead of checking for active threads in specific subforms so I'm not that fond of the idea. ^^

Greetings.

The idea is being floated around with the admins, moderators and owners. In the meantime, why don't we use this thread as a run-up to what could be potentially a new section? :D

My other interests take me to Macross, Classic car, 4x4, and Cichlid forums/pages. Often, there are subsections dedicated to a common interest outside the forum topic.

Knives, I know this is not in the spirit of what you suggested, but if you search for a particular member's profile in the Member Profile section you may find some interesting tidbits. :)

Well,

So far the consensus has been to retain our current standards and avoid the "Mess Hall" atmosphere that existed in a previous rendition of what you are suggesting Knives.

You can always peruse the member profiles for outside interests you relate to and it has been suggested that conversations via PM could be had. I suppose the overarching concern is that we don't end up with a social network sub-section. The team has a full plate as it is and there are other sites available to members for conversing.

Cheers.

This is a sad day for the nobel profession of otter milking.
