"Free" fortifications in missions

What exactly is the catch with "free" fortifications in planetstrike, for instance?

Can't you just take 200 tidewall gunports and obliterate the enemy's army? There has to be a catch with this.

The catch is that they (typically) get more Firestorm attacks. As the Tidewall stuff has the "Building" keyword it gives 2 extra Firestorm attacks instead of 1.

A Firestorm attack is basically this:
- The Attacker Places 6 Markers labelled 1 - 6
- The Attacker then rolls X Dice -- Where X is the number of Firestorm attacks
- The number on the rolled dice indicates that a Firestorm occurs at that location
- A Firestorm deals 1d6 Mortal wounds to all units within 3" of the Marker

----

I don't think the Tidewall stuff isn't worth the "price" even though it is free. Take one of the unaligned Fortifications instead.

For one, the cost of getting that would be exceedingly prohibitive. Like in real money.

For two, firestorm attacks as stated (though those are less of an issue if you are in the building itself).

For three, the armies are decided after the mission is called, and there is no set PL limit. The mission also assumes the attacker (the side without fortifications) gets a higher PL. So you aren't so much getting free fortifications as you are using them to rectify the assumed imbalance.

But hey, if you wanna play an epic drop against a super fortified T'au stronghold that has dozens of Gunrigs and Droneports and you have the models to do it, then rock on. It would make for one hell of a story.

Wait, so for each building the defender has, the attacker gets two firestorm attacks? That's crazy! Sounds like a fun way to play.

You pay PL for units but the buildings are free right?

Well, you pay something for the Units and fortifications are free (So, you can have a Fortress of Redemption, Imperial Bastion, Aegis Defence Line, and/or a Shieldwall).

I do recommend giving Planetstrike a try; it is a rather fun format. Although if you are the Defender you have to field the "Planetstrike Defender" detachment and that requires you have 3 Heavy Support models (And that role isn't exactly T'au's strong point at the moment).

I would suggest Missilesides with EWO standing on top of buildings or near them. They make great area denial units, especially considering the attacker is guarenteed to be deep striking.
