The most important thing is to increase its firepower. So, you want ATS. Then, since the Riptide is always moving but has heavy weapons, it needs a Target Lock. Those two support systems should be effective.

So, first and foremost, Target Lock is an auto-include on Riptides. Riptides, like most of our stuff, likes to keep moving as much as possible. The Riptide needs a way to ignore the movement penalty for shooting its main guns (both of which are obviously Heavy). So, in my humble opinion, if you're taking a Riptide, you're taking Target Lock on it, no ifs, ands, or buts.

As for the second SS choice, to me it depends on your main weapon choice. If you are running a HBC, you're gonna want an ATS with it. Since we're only damage 1 on the HBC, we need all the help we can get with it, so taking that AP to a -2 is the best option. This also heavily benefits SMS giving it AP -1. While it doesn't really help PR all that much, I can say from experience that FBs are hilarious with AP -5. But, at the end of the day, your SS choice needs to reflect your main gun choice, not your secondary weapons, so don't worry too much about those.

As for the IA, I would say pick up Stim. The IA doesn't need the help from an ATS, and nothing else really helps boost its killing power. So, in this case, we're generally better off boosting the Riptide's survivability. A 6+ ignore damage doesn't sound like much, but its better than nothing, especially when it allows us to have a chance of ignoring the mortal wound from the Nova Reactor.

The best riptide support system in 8th edition is a shelf. RIPtide AKA Riptard AKA Garbage

That being said....if you like the model and don’t care about winnng, Target lock and ATS...

I have found that the best use for Riptides is to show my opponent their points cost. Doing so will usually result in your opponent laughing out loud for quite a few minutes and lose focus on the game ;)

IMO the best use for riptide rn is proxying Y'vahra
Hopefully it will be better once the codex drops, as I am fond of mecha tau, and riptide and its variants are the coolest suits we have, along with ghostkeel and for me the coolest models in our army

That is a really negative, discouaging thing to say to a new player.

The intent of the OP isn't whether or not Riptide is 'good' by whatever arbitrary metric you worship, but interesting, common or innovative ways to equip it.

So then, if getting to 5 markerlights is the best way to help big suits, and along the markerlight tree is the same ability as Target Lock, maybe someone can explain why your points wouldn't be better spent elsewhere.

If by negative against the Riptide and an attempt to discourage him from using it...then yes...that was the intent. Better for him to realize it now before he spends a ton of money on a bad unit that will potentially make him not enjoy his games. Like I said...if he likes the looks and doesn't care about winning (aka. the model being worth its points or PL in a battle) then target lock and ATS. It's actually one of the few units in the Tau index that is worse at PL than at points...which is said because it is soooo bad in points already. It's PL translation to points is roughly 340 points...almost 20p points more than the fully kitted out HBC ATS/TL version in a points battle!!! Unlesss he wrote the rules for it or helped design the model (which we almost all agree is great) then I don't see why that would offend him, and I certainly don't see why you need to get offended for him.

Also, markerlights are in limited supply in 8th. Other units need them more, especially since this guy may find himself targeting models that the rest of the army may not be suited for. I'd stick with the afore mentioned setup.

The riptide is a great model. The OP likely already has one. Maybe don't double down on rotten behavior.

And on a more personal note, I got my first Riptide for Christmas. Even in the face of aggresively un-fun posters on here, I'm excited for it. So I'm definitely also interested in what constructive things people have to say on the subject.

There was no initial indication that the OP had one before we all responded not to use it. The point of the response was to discourage buying it depending on if he values balanced games. No one is arguing the Riptide isn't a great looking model. I have two gathering dust. That's why its rules are so painful to all of us on here. There are only so many things you can equip the Riptide with, and the community has tried in vain over the last two months to find a role where the Riptide can still be viable...really just a place where it can be on the table and not weigh your whole force down. Unfortunately, we couldn't really find one.

Congratulations on getting one. It's a beautiful model and fun for the hobby side of 40K...this post is about playing it in games, though. Lighten up and try not to take it so personally that we don't recommend playing it.

Sounds good then! Mathematically the Riptide isn't the most competitive unit, but I'm sure it will do great in casual games, especially with PL.

... And that's one of the main problems with this community. Too often people here forgets that there is also non competitive players, players that plays casual games hanging out with friends and having fun building beautiful armies and tables. So OP, just keep going using the Riptide, it's the most kickass unit in the game :)

I often forgot that there is a big competitive community. My friends and I are not competitive. And we love to experiment a Little Bit that is why I am gonna buy me The New custodes for my tau army.
