"There..!" shouted Ursu, her arm indicating an object not far beyond the dusky rocks they had all sought cover in.
Mylen, the la'rua Shas'vre, fired a burst to the rear then glanced at the prize. A marred dome could just be made out, nestled atop a craggy knoll that overlooked the arid plain.
"That's it, no beacon signal, but that's definitely it" he replied, hunkering down as a fusillade of lasfire seared past his position.
The cadre dropship had only brought them so far, before it had become victim to the same Imperial patrol which pursued the tau even still. Numbering four times that of the tau, it was a difference in size which would quickly cut the tau off from the recon drone once the Imperials realised their quarries intent.
"Hold this position, I'll make the recovery" before such a notion occurred to the gue'la, Mylen set about an attempt.
Even as lasfire trace flickered and burned about them with growing intensity, the shas'la quickly spread out into more defensible positions
Examining his surrounds, Mylen entered several calculations into a embedded wrist-screen, looking to his most trusted shas'la when he finished,
"Ursu, if I fail, destroy it no matter the cost"
She paused a moment, then acknowledged with a sign, taking his carbine when he drew a slim pulse pistol.
The tau leader looked to the Gun Drone linked to him. After a quick mental game it orientated protectively alongside the shas'vre, underslung twin-linked carbines twitching in readiness.
""I want a coordinated grenade suppression on their forward line, then cover fire," he warned everyone, "On my tone.."
Gripping the familiar weight of the pulse pistol, an overlooked keepsake from his days flying scout skimmers, he waited for a lull in the exchange. It came quickly when the Imperials decided to inspect their marksmanship. The tau could even hear the zealous leader berate the lack of success. It was then Mylen dipped his chin onto his transmit pad, ..and ran.
The tau veteran had already covered half the distance when the EMP grenades detonated among the Imperials, ensuring a deadly fusillade was a complete shambles. The strobe effect of angry pulse weapons and desperate lasfire, accentuated the path which the shas'vre took, causing a staggered montage of violent hues upon the arid ground.
Ahead, two skulking gue'la had just come across the crashed drone. Pistol at the ready and double braced, the tau shot the pair on the run, barely sparing a thought for their tactful flanking. Even so, a simultaneous volley hit both the drone and the shas'vre. His leg knocked from under him, Mylen found himself rolling the final few steps. Although unaffected, the drone bobbed low to cover the tau's impromptu acrobatics then suddenly somersaulted sideways itself, the lead carbine clipping a small protruding rock. Yet in spite of this near disastrous end, the shas'vre found himself sprawled out next to the broken command drone.
Ignoring the feeling of a Kroot-Ox having stepped on his thigh, Mylen quickly found the relevant access panel under the scorched dome. Sliding back the sleeve, he keyed in a code. The all important data-wafer ejected from it's crashcase, which he secured immediately, then he transmitted his preset barrage request. Direct to the drop cadre's ever vigilant Manta, it would be flagged priority just for being transmitted via a command level drone. Yet for what seemed an age nothing happened.
'Granted' appeared boldly across the slit-screen.
Mylen looked to his bombardment icon and winked. As one, the la'rua hunkered down where they could while the growled auto-warning continued unabated, then abruptly ceased.
The violence that erupted with precision only a few paces away, rained mercilessly down, high explosive seeker missiles pulverising the area the shas'vre had specified. Even huddled among the rocks, shock waves snatched at the tau, as they cowered at the edge of a localised apocalypse.
Just as suddenly, the barrage lifted and a new downpour, of dust and sand began drifting across the tau. Mylen almost let himself relax a moment, but a new objective icon winked into existence. He gazed at the blue flare of light that played in his vision and let out a slight, exasperated grunt. However his mood changed to relief when an evacuation animation appeared above it.
"Ursu? confirm the strike.." he asked after a moment.
"Not much left to confirm anything about Shas'Vre" she replied, relief evident in her voice.
Mylen rolled onto his hooves as the gun drone hovered back from wherever it had found shelter, wearing a few new scratches and a clump of burnt wildgrass. Feeling as rough as the vesa looked, Mylen inspected his wound to discover the leg carapace had absorbed the lasblast. However, now useless, he discarded the ruin. While fussing, he extracted an ion charge from a hip satchel and placed it deftly under the remains of the recon drone when he finished.
"Evac, lets move quickly now.." with a mental reflex he sent out a directional waypoint, accepting the return of his carbine from Ursu as she trotted past.
Mylen followed, but limped a few paces, evaluating his discomfort then finally coming into line with the others. Having covered some distance, the tau ignored the sudden detonation behind them, punctuating the end of their previous objective.
Welcome, to the third ATT Modelling Challenge.
Hi, I'm Shas'El Tael, you might remember me from such threads as, the Stealth XV8, the Shea'shi Auxiliary, Tau White Dwarf articles and other online artwork, such as those decorating this fine forum. Suffice to say, I love working on Tau related projects. We have covered Firewarriors and Battlesuits so far in our past here on ATT, specifically to ensure as many folks can enter easily. In keeping with this trend, this challenge involves using all those spare bits and pieces to create something each gamer needs for those hard fought battles. In my readings I have encountered plenty of uber-XV8's, alien allies, vehicle conversions, etcetera. But few if any Objective Markers.
The Challenge? Create a single Tau orientated Objective Marker, placed upon on a single Round 40mm base. For Example;
A Tau Power Node, a capture Objective perhaps?
The Guidelines :
- You may only enter one Marker.
- The Marker must be of Tau Orientation, be it a humanoid, object or structure.
- The judging is based on modelling creativity, not paint job. Although, a base coat is recommended.
- You must be an ATT member of at least 30days to enter. No community award-ninjas here thanks.
- All ranks are eligible to enter, except the ATT Founders (Tonka, Myself etc..).
A thread will be setup two days before the deadline. Each entrant will then be able to email their photos to the supplied email address and be asked to supply specific details. The entries will be judged by the ATT team to produce a final cut. This will include no more than 20 entries. A straight forward A-Z entry poll will be created for the membership to then vote upon their favourites.
- Entries accepted from the 18th.
- Closing April 20th (24hrs until the 21st EDT)
- The Member Poll will be opened within 48hrs, and a winner will be announced on the 25th.
- Winner of the third only Challenge in ATT's history.
- Your entry becoming a part of the most comprehensive collection of Tau Objective Markers to date.
- An Official ATT Administration level design Avatar created by Shas'El Tael, hosted permanently on ATT. (Subject matter of your choice)
Feel free to create one thread discussing your work in progress, I really encourage this, as it would be beneficial to members whom are new to modelling, offering ideas about utilising even the oddest spare part. Take some inspiration from how the community went about the Battlesuit Challenge. This thread will be left open for discussion and guidance, though I feel the details are pretty clear. Please do give it a go, enjoy dreaming up your creations. We all look forward to a collection of the most extensive and enviable Tau Objective Markers on the internet today.
For the Greater Good,
