[Showcase] Battlesuit Conversion Challenge

A small, blue hologram of an Ethereal in Dress Robes sparks and instantly flickers to life in the middle of each Fio Workshop throughout the extensive Academy's facilities. The Aun'O pauses for effect and a steady, calmed silence falls upon the usually active workshops.

Greetings Diligent Fio, I trust you have toiled and made great efforts towards our goals of assembling and testing a range of new battlesuits. Now I offer you a time for rest, sharing and reflection.

Please upload your data to this Academy Drone now and be sure to link it back to your workshop database (WIP thread or Finished Entry Thread) so that we may offer feedback and compare our designs and developments. Please do upload even if you have not yet completed your design, whilst under the current wartime restrictions we understand that some of you have been hard-pushed to have everything completed by our suggested deadline.

We ask that you please keep this particular Drone for uplink only and that all replies be made in the respective Workshop databases. (linked threads!)

Thank you again for your efforts, we look forward to seeing what you have done and to rewarding your for your efforts!

Advanced Tau Tactica Academy Profile Excerpt

Shas'El Kai'Aun whilst serving under Tio'Ve [Contingent]El Shi'Eldi during the Defense of Taros.

The Academy wishes to showcase one of our most accomplished Commanders in the field of Heavy Reconnaissance, Raiding and Containment and so bring you this excerpt from the archives.

Under the guidance of their experienced commander, Shas'El Shi'Eldi, the two Reconnaissance Hunter Cadres of his Contingent were sent on infiltration, disruption and high-speed night sabotage operations to cut off the Gue'La supply routes to slow their forces down and deprive them of vital fuel and ammunition. Under the cover of darkness, teams were able to infiltrate and sabotage supply bases and wreak havoc amongst rear echelon logistical support formations. Shas'O 'R'Myr had decided that the Desert War would be the deciding factor in Taros fate and timed it perfectly, these operations hit their maximum operational tempo just as the battle for Phyyra Heights reached it's peak and the Battle Hunter Cadres had blunted the Gue'La offense at Tarokeen.

Here we can see the modified and up-armored Command suit of Shas'El Kai'Aun just as it is leaving the Fio Workshop and before it's in-theatre paint scheme was applied. The suit has been augmented for deep insertion behind enemy lines and is up-armored for CQB [Close Quarter Battle] situations. Additional, large Infra-red recognition panels in the central horizontal axis of the suit allow for quick visual recognition in all conditions. This proved particularly effective due to the heavy smoke clouds caused by the ignition of the Gue'La primitive combustible fuels. Visible only in the infra-red spectrum, these panels glow "white-hot" in the pilots read-out to easily identify friendly forces in close quarters during the heat of battle.

Although generally frowned upon and in stark contrast to Shas'El K'Irri, El Kai'Aun insisted that some of his team also be equipped with Gue'La weaponry. Despite being of poor manufacture quality and lacking the sophistication of our own Tau equivalents, he reasoned that ammunition re-supply would be plentiful and that the sound of "friendly weaponry" in their midst would confuse the Gue'La as to the actual position and composition of the raiding force. His unconventional ways proved successful for a time and Shas'El Shi'Eldi unofficially approved of his methods. Here we see his battlesuit equipped with a Gue'La Reaction and Gas Blow-back operated explosive projectile "automatic-cannon" to borrow Gue'La terminology. Although inferior in many respects to the Missile Pod, it does have one interesting advantage that El Kai'Aun often used to great effect. With sophisticated guidance and weapon interface technology properly embedded into the weapon, it can be fired in an arcing trajectory over obstructions out of the line of sight of the battlesuit itself to engage unseen enemies and more often, to provide indirect close fire-support to Shas'La teams under his command.

One the suit's left armature we see a standard issue CIB (Cyclic Ion Blaster) with expanded ammunition capacity.

Lastly, the battlesuit has one of the earliest examples of production Vectored Retro-Thrusters, to both aid CQB situations, to facilitate faster Infil and Exfil and to help with the augmented battlesuit's extra weight.

El Kai'Aun went on to lead the Heavy Reconnaissance Elements of Tio'Ve [Contingent] El Shi'Eldi after the death of Shas'El K'Irri, whose remaining forces were too far below effective combat strength and so absorbed into the remaining Recon Cadre. El Kai'Aun has since become the leading expert on both Raiding and Containment for the T'au Sept, in part through his extensive experience on Taros and also as he has dedicated his career to pay homage to his respected senior Shas'El K'Irri. His stirring narrative of the last battle of Shas'El K'Irri, gallantly sacrificing himself to create a diversionary counter-attack against the Airbase Defenders pressing in from all sides on the beleaguered raiders as dawn arrived is now required reading by all Shas'Ui and above attending the Recon School Specialist Course at the Academy.

We salute both Shas'El Kai'Aun and his dedication to the Tau Way of War and Shas'El K'Irri and his deserved position within the Advanced Tau Tactica Academy Hall of Honour.

Notes on the build and background.

My inspiration for this mini comes from 3 sources.

First is from having a read of Imperial Armour Three, the Taros Campaign. Within it is an interesting account of various actions between Imperial Forces and the Tau during the actions on Taros. I was quite surprised to spot a character named "Kai'Aun" and thought that it was an unusual enough coincidence that I should name my suit's pilot's character after this particular Hunter Cadre Commander.

Second inspiration comes from the up-armored IFV Bradley as seen in ODS and OIF. Coalition vehicles were fitted with extra armor plating and CIP. These Combat Identification (or Coalition ID) panels show up as white squares on thermal sights. Initially I wanted little bolts like on the Bradley but couldn't find anything in small enough scale. Jutami gave me the very simple and I think stylish idea of drilling holes to simulate counter-sunk screws.I think this is much better and in keeping with the rest of the suit.

Third inspiration comes from recently reading about the early exploits of the Commonwealth forces in the Nth African and Mediterranean theater of WWII. I read that the Commando's would scrub their canvas based webbing until white for night operations so they would recognize each other in close quarters during their raids. Modern forces still sometimes do something similar, with bright green, or yellow or the coveted Green with Yellow Stripe Grounding Code tape. When dawn broke or under spotlights the white would give them away but for the rest of the mission it apparently worked very well. Modern forces slip a knife under the tape and cut/pull it away if time permits. So I envisaged Crisis teams zooming into enemy depots, cutting up and flaming down everything they could see in a short time and spotting each other by the CIP infra-red panels as used in current Middle Eastern theaters. The Taros campaign seemed a great match up for this, so the suit and the above background is what I put together for it.

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did both putting the suit together and thinking of and writing the background!

XV80

After the Taros campaigns conclusion, it became apparent among those of the Fio forgemasters, that enhancements given to their "trial by fire" suits (XV81,4,9) Could actually be combined into one suit, the only matter to decide upon was the trade off between armour, speed and firepower. The rule that 2 out of the 3 could be taken with little reduction in efficiency proved effective in production of newer variant suits, each matching the requirements of the commander privileged enough to be given one.

The XV80 has been designed with support in mind, allowing the Shas'o to direct the Cadre in the most effective manner, whilst still lending some adequate firepower to the bargain. Sporting a Smart missile system that trades the AI of each missile for range means that the Shas'O can be a killing blow, but from distance. It is thought that this variant could allow for the most valuable, experienced 'O's to be present on the battlefield but at minimal risk to themselves.
In addition to this barrage weapon, the dual Plasma rifle that R'myr so famously trialed has now been passed for use within all command level XV's.
Finally, the essence of the suits functions ie support, are lent an extra hand in the form of a Command and control link node. This is similar to the one used by Shadow sun, but being incorporated into the suit, means that the wearer has a far higher control over the information received.

Weapons Range STR AP TYPE
"Deliverance" launcher 36" 7 4 Assault 4
Dual linked Plasma rifle 24" 6 2 Assault 2

Command and control Node:
All units within 24" of the suit may use the wearers LD value for all morale, pinning and Target priority tests. (not including Kroot or Vespid)

And onto the shots! An entire gallery of them!

Cheers to all for driving me to complete this! Now to paint him for GD!

XV-8 "Assassin" Helios - Production
==========================

With the great pressure put on the commanders stationed within the Ke'lshan Kor'vattra, the need to develop more efficient and self-sufficient hardware was necessary. Each Fio workshop was commissioned by the Aun to develop both battlesuit and vehicle variants that could work for many rotaa, even up to the length of multiple kai'rotaa, without resupply, recharge, or maintenance other than what the pilot could do. It was from the workshop operating under the Ke'lshan 84-4 (commanded by El'Lasa'or'es) that developed the "Assassin" pattern XV-8.

Spurred by the need for devastating firepower compacted into a small package, especially when dealing with the monsters that periodically surge forth from the Perdus Rift. Designed with the Helios configuration in mind, the Assassin combines many different aspects of the Tau way of war into one platform. A personal Networked Markerlight, installed on the shoulder, allows the suit to augment its own shooting capabilities in leu of a separate source of marker beacons, along with the ability to call in Seeker Missiles when facing stiff opposition from afar. The various sensors give the suit's pilot increased situational awareness, allowing it to complete its mission without attracting much enemy notice.

The power systems were also completely revamped to allow a combination of synthetic and biodiesel fuels, allowing the pilot to remain in the field for much longer periods of time. This is essential with the condensed digital masking arrays present on various surfaces of the suit, allowing it to disguise itself in a vast variety of environments and disrupt various means of detection. Even the Fusion Blaster has been altered, the more compact weapon making the blast more lethal by decreasing the cool time of the bolt and refining the containment system.

While currently only in use by El'Lasa'or'es, various other cadres have requested permission to adopt the "Assassin" pattern for their own use, citing its reliability and destructiveness going hand in hand.

==========================
As can obviously be noted, the main inspiration for this production XV-8 is rooted in Shas'El Tael's Stealth XV-8. Most of the main body construction follows what he outlined. As this model needs to "duplicate then elaborate" the original mode, I styled it with what I felt would be needed on a front line/behind enemy lines mission, especially where it may be called on to work on its own.

I also wanted to make a suit that wasn't very kit dependent. It uses parts from only two boxes: the XV-8 battlesuit and the Sky Ray (with the exception of a second Sensor Spine part for the shoulder). I also wanted to make a suit that didn't need a lot of Green Stuff patching, specifically any. I did not want to use Green Stuff, both because I didn't want to buy it and because I did not want the design dependent on it. With those ideas in mind, I cut precisely and accurately, allowing the suit to exist.

I changed a few things from Shas'El Tael's design, both through the "no kit bashing" philosophy and my own personal preference for aesthetics. Drone aerials replaced the SM Dreadnought engine cover (I had them left over from the mutton chomps on the helm) and a Sky Ray vent replaced the Lascannon targeter. I also eliminated some of the armor plates to show a nimbler, stealthier suit.

Wulfe pattern XV8 Prototype

I didnt really write any inspirational fluff surrounding this suit, however it should be noted that as much as I love Tau, I have always had a deepseated hate for the standard battlesuit. I always envisioned a battlesuit as something of a powered exoskeleton (not to be confused with powered armor, which you wear; a powered exoskeleton is something that is piloted), and was unhappy with the way the Tau portrayed them. Firefights are never stand up and shoot affairs, and as such, the battlesuit seemed ultra unrealistic in my eyes. It was something that could not take cover easily, and would be easily stopped by a large door with a handle on it :D

After I came to this realization, I spent many a month poking around various forums, until I came across Shi'ur's Upscaled Carbine variant. Instantly I had fallen in love with the idea of turning Crisis suits from a mini-Battletech ideal to an Appleseed variant. It wasnt until I saw Jutami post his swivel waist variant that all the pieces of my suit came together. BCC came along to kick my butt into gear and off I went with a vastly modified Tael suit.

My first and foremost inspiration is, and always will be, Starship Troopers (the book) by Robert Heinlein. Tau fit this fighting doctrine so well that I cant imagine ever owning another army (sept perhaps Elysians).

Second inspiration would definitely be Appleseed. I love how smooth the 'gear urban fighting is, and how the giant suits take cover and use squad tactics.

Third inspiration is definitely you guys at ATT. Without this site, I would still be disappointed with my crisis suits!

O'Suam's Production Battlesuit

This suit has been modified with an exceptional array of extra sensors and communication devices in order to aid the commander to properly survey the battlefield and give orders acordingly. Also it has been giving a slight boost in armor and manuverability by means of additional armor plating around known weak spots and additional thruster arrays in the rear.

An attempt to visualize the stabilizing system and adding the shield drones at the same time.
Early example of my new(est) paintscheme.
Standard broadside with a landing gear strut from a 'fish mounted instead of head and the RGs on top.
One of the shield drones use the GW bits and the other one has a shieldgenerator underneath

And for good measure, the commanding officers Ninja'O suit in Fireforge configuration. Still somewhat WIP as you can see.
Plenty of repositions and a slightly modded fusionblaster to make it look like he is holding it like a large pistol.
The thrust vectoring equipment is merly target locks.
Inspiration to this piece came from Tael, belive it or not... :P
and actually I think that someone else has done the VrT with TLs but I can't remember the name, sorry.

XV-8 Prototype
Backstory: Designed by Fio engineers of the Shi'An sept, the Ol'Eldi (Bright Wing) variant battlesuit was designed to improve on the speed and agility of the standard XV-8 battlesuit, for use in hit and run actions and flanking maneuvers. It sacrifices the two shoulder hardpoints to reduce weight and to incorporate an improved thruster array. It also features more powerful leg servos and a prototype AI to assist the pilot in controlling the suit at high speeds.

From among the sept's experienced pilots, the designers chose Shas'El Ka'Savon, a young commander who had recently acquired his rank by successfully leading forces to fend off a Genestealer infiltration of a Gue'Vesa asteroid-mining colony in a neighboring solar system, after the Shas'O assigned to the mission fell in battle.

Ka'Savon has provided the Fio with valuable test data by pushing the prototype to its limits with his aggressive and unorthodox (some would say reckless) tactics. Still, some worry that the AI is having a detrimental effect on his stability, and have privately drawn comparisons between his behavior and that of the renegade Commander O'Shovah. So far, though, the Aun have praised his effectiveness, and have seen no reason to question his loyalty.

Showcase and Comments Thread

Although I'd prefer to keep each of my entries as it's own thread, I'll combine them all here. They are separate in the comments thread for ease of browsing.

b]Close Quarters Combat XV-8 Prototype[/b]

It counts as commander Farsight and is a Prototype Crisis Suit design for close ranged combat, outside the norm for Tau, but that's why it's a prototype I suppose and not a production model. It uses an OS to amplify the skills of the pilot for close combat with the goal of making up for the Tau's typical weakness in the area.

Broadside Battlesuit Prototype

For long range precision anti-tank capabilities. Several design changes including single railgun, canister missile pods and a new leg design to allow for better positioning and a lower profile when firing. This leg design also adapts to varied terrain better. The lower profile allows the broadside to fit into smaller areas to fire from as well as become a smaller target.

XV-8 Crisis Battlesuit: "Thrust" Prototype.

It is designed to provide high speed and maneuverability for close quarters combat. Unlike the above combat suit, this suit is meant for short range anti-armour and not melee combat.

Its added thrusters allow it to get to weapons range faster by increasing the suit's top speed and duration of time spent in air over that of a normal XV-8. It also has far more directional thrust to help keep the pilot out of harms way when using the powerful, but short ranged armament of the suit. The goal is to be able to outmaneuver the target moving to the weakest side without the target being able to compensate.

XV-8 Production (Retrofit) - "Wing Commander"

Shas'El Cha'an looked at the viewscreen. The battle wasn't going good in the city below the mountain Fio lab. His brother, Shas'O Cha'eng's, life support system readings from his battlesuit now reads him as KIA. On top of that the Kor'Va is tied down by Imperial Fighters and are unable to bring much needed aerial support. Shas'El Cha'an's only hope is to get down to the trapped firewarriors still left and help break them out of the Imperial Guard's blockade of the city. Now it is time to put the Fio Caste to the test, time has almost run out.
"Fio'O, I need to get my battlesuit down to the city now." said Shas'El Cha'an

"All Orcas are shot down by the Imperials, even the lone Manta is having a difficult time defending against their numbers in the air." replied the Fio'O

"Those left over seeker missiles, retro-fit them to my suit. I will use their power to speed down into the heart of the city from the mountains here. With luck I can break the backs of the enemy and give the firewarriors a chance to get out of there." said Cha'an.

"That's madness. I could get the maintence drones to install a makeshift retro-thrusters but I'm not sure if the suit or yourself can tolerate the increased acceleration rate." exclaimed the Fio'O

"Get it done. We haven't got time to plan anymore. Install the stimulant injectors as well. This is going to be a long fight and I'm needed there 5 decs ago."

XV-82-1 "Exterminator" Prototype
**********************************
With the recent Third Sphere Expansion came many new XV patterns. The XV-82-1 "Exterminator" was one such prototype entrusted to Shas'O Ksi'M'Yem Kunas'Anuk.
The "exterminator" boast formidable weapons which can easily be configured into multiple weapon types depending on the foe:

~The TX-6-2 "Thundercannon" can switch between a standard Missile Pod, as well as an Airbursting Fragmentation Launcher by simply changing the ammunition

~The PPAR (Plasma Partical Accellerator Rifle) is capable of sustained rapid fire, effectivly turning it into a Burst Cannon, or by increasing the power output, is capable of firing Powerful bursts of plasma with a lower rate of fire, similar to a Plasma Rifle.

The head unit is considerably wider than that of a standard XV-pattern helm, housing cooling vents for the advanced sensor suit and multi-tracker located in the head. The antenna unit allows O'Kunas'Anuk to take drones should he desire, as well as an advanced communications suite.

The main body of the suit boasts additional armour to the shoulders, shins and around its head. It also incorporates a secondary targeting system so that the pilot may continue to see in front of the suit, as well as wherever the head is turned.
Image

The "V" pattern jetpack has been designed to increase mobility of the suit.
It allows the user to make long side steps as well as powerful forward jumps.

XV 81 Close Assault Crisis Suit
Ethereal Glory Pattern Command Suit

[Cargo hold of 3rd D'Yanoi Expeditionary Force Flagship "Eternal Shadow"]

Fio'El Vior'La Elan'Ro stood in the middle of the crisis suit maintenance hanger, a large curtain draped across the bay behind him. High ranking representatives of each caste stood nearby, talking quietly amongst themselves. The Shas seemed particularly excited, speculating on what could be behind the display. Elan'Ro cleared his throat noisily, causing the conversations to slowly dwindle out.

"Worthy Aun, Master Fio'O, assembled Shas, Por and Kor," he began, shifting nervously from hoof to hoof. "It is with much humility and pleasure that I present you the XV 81 'Ethereal Glory' pattern Close Assault Crisis Suit. This XV 81 was made specially for Shas'O D'Yanoi Aloh'raik'an, as a tool with which he may further our work to spread the Greater Good to the stars. His specification were very demanding, but our engineers demonstrated great skill and perseverance. It would please me, assembled Tau, to present to you the unique capabilities of the XV 81 Close Assault Crisis Suit."

At a nod from Elan'Ro, an aid pulled on a lever to raise the curtain up. The audience gazed in silence as the war machine was slowly revealed. It glistened with the sheen that only a virgin machine could, the blue, black and red of Aloh'raik'an's Blooded Eternity cadre glowing under the maintenance lights. After letting his audience stare for a few moments, Elan'Ro began his presentation.

"Shas'O Aloh'raik'an anticipates that the next campaign will be against the armored Gue'La, and as such he expects that close quarters combat will be unavoidable," he began, nodding towards the new commander. "The modifications undertaken were designed to meet the Gue'La head on and defeat them at their own strengths. As you will notice, the chassis has been enhanced significantly. The limbs have been lengthened to facilitate greater agility and speed while also increasing effectiveness in close combat. Furthermore, the armor has been heavily reinforced with Iridium, matching the protection offered by the so called 'Terminator' armor encountered in major campaigns. The only drawback is that the jets have trouble compensating for the added weight and may not provide adequate thrust, but this has been deemed an acceptable sacrifice.

"In addition to requesting the ability to match the armored Gue'La in combat, Shas'O Aloh'raik'an has requested a way to depart combat at his choosing and leave his foes to the mercy of his Cadre," he continued, nervousness forgotten as he began feeling the pride of his work. "As such, may I direct your attention to the vectored retro thruster system? Though fuel consumption is greatly increased during activation, power may be diverted to the retro thrusters to provide a marked increase in speed and agility that can be used to leap from combat or maneuver through difficult terrain. The wings aid in directing the jet wash as well as providing shielding from enemy attacks.

"The modifications to the head were also extensive, requiring a full redesign of the standard XV8 sensor suite and armor. The mask and chin, while providing an intimidating visage, are primarily a short range targeting and tracking system designed to keep up with the chaos of close quarters combat. A multitracker was the basis for the sensor suite, with components from a targeting array and blacksun filter.

"The weapons Shas'O Aloh'raik'an chose were modified as well, based on his previous load out. The Plasma Rifle has an extended barrel and increased capacitor...well...capacity. The Cyclic Ion Blaster, in the left hand, has an extended magazine and a slightly higher rate of fire. We unfortunately were unable to accomplish more, but low grade Ion weapons are still in the experimental stage. Due to the close range fighting, both weapons were designed to be dropped to prevent them from becoming damaged during combat.

"However, this XV 81 was designed to fight Gue'La in hand to hand combat and defeat them. While I do understand that standard Shas doctrine calls for close combat to be avoided if possible, and relegated to the Kroot when not, the Shas'O briefed our engineers that it would be inevitable. He specifically pointed out the threat that the jet equipped Gue'La pose if deployed by a skilled commander. He also pointed out the ability of “power” weapons to negate the thickest armor, and the threat posed by their heavy weapons.

"As such, we developed the Power Shield. By itself, it will stop nearly any attack short of a rail gun slug. However, the inclusion of a shield generator overcomes even this shortfall. The energy field also has the side effect of acting in the same manner as the Gue'La power weapons, denying the Gue'La their own protection. The only drawback is that it draws a great deal of power, and so the shield cannot extend to cover the entire suit. Hence, the Shas'O needs to intercept the incoming attacks with the shield, though the sensor suite has programming that can track those attacks and allow him to adjust the shield accordingly.

"And so, sirs, it is my privilege to present this XV 81 to Shas'O D'Yanoi Aloh'raik'an," Elan'Ro finished, bowing to the Shas. After the commander nodded and smiled, Elan'Ro turned back to the rest of the Tau assembled. "We will upload the plans to the main database as per regulations, and begin modifications to our existing fleet of crisis suits. Thank you for your time, and may our efforts continue to spread the Greater Good."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My inspiration for this suit came heavily from Gundam Wing, primarily the Wing Gundam and Wing Zero. The Tael pattern suit of course was an influence, as was Jutami's Invader style head. I started out copying them exactly, noticed the similarity to a Gundam style head, and got the sudden idea to go with huge shoulders, wings, a massive shield and all the works. Many thanks to the people who responded to my WIP thread with enouragement and ideas.

Dark Gear's Mantis XV-8 Prototype

When taking the fight to the enemy's door, sometimes you must burn down the door to reach the enemy. This holds true especially when you have forced your opponent back from the frontlines. In such cases, every nook and cranny, every alleyway is a potential trap waiting to be sprung. Our weapon systems have taught our foes to fear our aim and thus they play the hunter. We will now teach them to fear our nearing footsteps as we stalk them within flame's reach.

-Shas'O"Aud'Tsu

On the fringe worlds of the Tau Empire a black menace slowly approaches, Necrons. As many have learned with their lives, these machines are a grim foe that seldom stays down. Tired of seeing so many brethren flayed to pieces, Shas'O Tsu started experimenting with new tactics and weapon combinations. The result of these trials has taken the form of the XV-8 "Mantis". Main advancements include longer arms to better aim weapon systems around the many obstacles of the urban combat environment. Weapons were also redesigned and made more compact without sacrificing stopping power. To increase survivability and maintenance in the field, modular applique armour has been applied to front and side facing surfaces. The biggest change however lies in the suit's lower extremeties. Due to the extra strain they must endure when landing in uneven ground, the legs were given an extra joint and two larger, independently actuated toes that ensure more even contact. The suit also incorporates a shield generator as back-up in the unfortunate case the accompanying gun and shield drones should be disabled in the field.

Further information about the development history as well as detail shots of the finished build can be found here.
