In all honesty, the fact that GW melds so many elements from classic Sci-Fi and Anime Mech (Hell, Battletech, Macross and Patlabor fandom is what led me to play Tau in the first place) is what I like about it. You could say that the idea for Anthropomorphic robots in modern media was ripped off from Fritz Lang, but then again, I think Talos was an Ancient Greek myth about a Bronze Automaton -- come to think of it, isn't that word constructed from Greek roots?
To be fair, Dune was inspired by the 1950s struggle for political/ideological dominance in the middle-east-- which makes sense considering Herbert's education and profession when writing the books. Replace "Spice" with "Crude Oil," and "House Harkonnen" with the Stalinist/Russian/Socialist influence that were prevalent in the middle-east at that time, since after WW2 and the Marshall Plan, Russia has been trying to use its control over energy resources and saw the middle-east as its main competition/potential business partners. Also, replace "House Atreides" (which itself was drawn from the ancient Greek, Homer) with the western influence vying for Spice, erm, Oil (Capitalism/Liberalism, and the promise of "independence and self-governance").
Actually, pretty much everything-- from Walt Disney to William Shakespeare-- was ripped off from the Ancient Romans, who copied the Ancient Greeks, who were influenced by the Persians, who stole from Assyrians, Egyptians, Sumerians, etc.
Also, I like your work Paulson, I ordered your CIB alternatives when I first saw them on eBay-- I ordered two batches of 6. They're super easy to magnetize, and they look gorgeous painted. I plan to order more, and possibly pick up some of the Not-AFPs.
