I've been working on a scheme of "more spot colour". My main scheme is dark grey, light grey, with spot colour orange. As my units get more elite, I add more orange bits. The paneling armor segments of the tau are great for this! more panels painted orange means a higher ranking!
For these "veterans", I plan to do a dark scheme, more camo, almost like they are more tactical then everyone else!

Update: I tested out a couple paint jobs, but they all looked too far off from my army scheme. What I did was invert the colour only on the shoulder pads, but keep the armor the same. I also gave the veteran camouflage pants instead of the standard issue dark gray of regular troops. And lastly, to really drive the point home, I painted a "face paint skull" on the bare face. So far I've only completed one, and I'm not sure if I'll do skulls on the other 4 veterans or just any "war paint" designs, like stripes, tau letters, etc.
