2015 "Confusion" Challenge : The Replacements VOTING

Image

Please view the following entries and vote on your favourite based upon execution, background and paint work. Thank you to all who entered, giving the community a swathe of new ideas and modelling inspiration. In no particular order:

ENTRY ONE - The Prax

Image
Prax'La Maydoros

The Prax are a reptilian, bipedal race that were encountered during the second sphere of expansion. When they were discovered by a deep space reconnaissance drone, the Prax were developing a fledgling interstellar civilization. They had recently colonized their first planet outside of their home system, and had recently entered into a unified planetary government, overcoming centuries of violence against one another and a deep-rooted warrior tradition. The Prax were quickly identified as a strong candidate for peaceful incorporation into the Tau Empire. However, all diplomatic and economic overtures were rejected by the Prax government, and after decades of failed negotiations, the Water Caste stepped aside and allowed the Fire Caste to begin the forceful incorporation of the Prax into the Tau Empire.

The Fire Caste was able to quickly conquer the Prax's colony, but was only able to defeat the military forces on the Prax homeworld after a hard-fought campaign despite a clear technological edge. On their homeworld, the Prax continued armed resistance through successive guerrilla campaigns across the planet for two generations, taking a toll on the Fire Caste that proved greater than the initial conquest. The Prax's colony, with its smaller population, was integrated without any significant resistance after the initial invasion and their speedy capitulation remains a sore spot between Colonial and Homeworld Prax. The deeper green tone of Homeworld Prax's skin, caused by stronger sunlight in the Homeworld Prax system, serves to readily identify Homeworld and non-Homeworld Prax.

Image
Prax'Ui Eio'Ka'Mesa

The Prax evolved as social ambush predators, and benefit from several physical advantages that allow them to operate as effective scouts in the Tau Military. Long, thin whiskers are one of the most noticeable features of an adult Prax, and are extremely sensitive to scent and low-frequency sound. They can suddenly extend their necks to nearly a meter in length, to peer around corners or inspect cramped areas. Prax eyes operate independently of one another; and while this can be disconcerting to other species trying to hold a conversation with a Prax while one of their eyes darts around the room, the Prax can switch instantly between nearly 360 degree vision and a smaller field of view with predatory depth perception. Small teams of Prax, known as 'Whisker Scouts', operate in a similar role to conventional Tau Pathfinders.

Leading this team is a young Prax called Prax'Ui Eio'Ka'Mesa, who was orphaned long ago and raised among the Fire Caste. Trained as a Fire Warrior, he fought as a bonded member of a pathfinder team during an encounter with an Ork Warlord, in which he was the sole survivor from his team. With substantial bionics (including his left eye), he now leads his own team of Prax 'Whisker Scouts', although he still carries his old bonding knife. Among his new team, there are two 'Homeworld' and one 'Colonial' Prax. Their motivations for joining the Prax Auxiliaries serving alongside the Tau Fire Caste include a deep sense of Patriotism, pride in the military traditions of the Prax, and a search for retribution.

Image

Prax'La Maydoros hails from the Prax Homeworld, and was raised in a family with a long and proud military tradition. His ancestors fought in every major conflict in modern Prax history, and he plans to continue that tradition alongside the Tau. 'La Talafir is another young Prax, but from the Prax's first Colony. Talafir joined the Auxiliaries out of a deep sense of duty, and hopes to serve the Greater Good by defending it against the Empire's many enemies. Prax'La Lorentai, the eldest Prax on the team - easily recognizable for his long, wispy whiskers and the traditional Kalz knife at his side, has a darker motivation for joining the Auxiliaries. His family was killed in a raid perpetrated by unknown forces on the Prax Homeworld, and he joined for two reasons: it would get him away from the site of the tragedy, and it was the only hope, albeit small, he could ever have to avenge his family. Although he is Prax'Ui Eio's most capable soldier, his behavior can border on insubordination.

ENTRY TWO - The Galg

The "Galg": To be used as a "Pathfinder Team"

Image

The Galg are a capricious, disreputable species who's home system lies in the eastern sector of the Perdus Rift. Hundreds of warbands, or 'Knots', have plied the fractious region for centuries, serving as mercenaries to any paying species or, when times become difficult, as pirates. Until the Tau brought their worlds into compliance, these amphibian-like aliens were the scourge of many a specie's shipping lanes and outposts.

Image

Galg Knots now function as deep-cover reconnaissance operatives, well beyond the limitations of the Shas'Ar'Tol, often under the direction of the Water Caste. Utilizing Earth Caste augmented armor, equipment and projectile weapons, the Galg commit the sometimes necessary atrocities of war without leaving evidence of Tau involvement. They do this without reservation, regarding the Tau as merely employers rather than needing to believe their crimes serve a higher morality like the Greater Good.

They do this with their silent, magnetically accelerated fletchette guns, each barb tipped with chemicals that, when combined in high enough amounts, can cause targets to explode violently. The larger rifle version of this technology is, with the addition of Tau augmentation, capable of destroying light vehicles or obliterating a prioritized enemy target.

Image

Lead by a merciless "Broodmother" gifted with a personalized XV suit, she serves as a link between her Knot and the Tau, identifying targets of opportunity that her warriors have hunted for days, sometimes weeks, before confrontation. In addition, she is equipped with gear to extract DNA from a, mostly, dead target in order to prove to her handler that an assassination has been successful.

ENTRY THREE - Gue'vesa Scouts

Image

Most Gue’vesa Scout units provide infantry support for other forward Tau units, primarily Tau Pathfinders and Kroot carnivore squads, however, they support any unit that happens to be fighting in the same area. While they are one of the few non-Tau species given the honor of carrying Markerlights, they do not use them as often as Pathfinder squads. When not fighting at the main battle, Gue’vesa scouts help other auxiliary units complete their missions behind enemy lines, spotting and predicting enemy movements. When fighting behind enemy lines Gue’vesa scouts will often flank the enemy and attack them with heavy weapons, or when fighting at night or in areas with heavy cover they will use their Markerlights, if the squad leader determines that it’s needed.

Image

The primary source of Gue’vesa scouts is from Humans that have spent most, if not all, of their lives as a part of the Tau Empire. How an individual sept selects Gue’vesa soldiers to be scouts varies, many take volunteers as the main source, while others leave it up to the Gue’vesa’vre or Gue’vesa’el in charge of the auxiliary Gue’vesa in the Cadre.

Image

Most Gue’vesa scouts are equipped with light armor, similar to that of Pathfinders. They are one of the Tau’s auxiliary units that carry Tau weapons, Pulse Carbines and Markerlights. Some exceptional squads are given advanced weapons and equipment, such as Ion rifles and Rail rifles or experimental drones usually given to pathfinder squads. Many Gue’vesa scout squads are also given 4 fingered gloves in an effort by the Tau to help protect their fingers when fighting and when behind enemy lines. Some Gue’vesa scout squads chose to wear cloaks to help them blend in when fighting and when behind enemy lines.

Re: 2015 "Confusion" Challenge : The Replacements VOTING

ENTRY FOUR - Shas'Gue'la

Image

During the defense of Taros, Shas'O R'myr wisely allowed the former PDF troops to retain their weapons and defend their world from the brutal retribution of the Imperium, so long as they were willing to serve under direct Tau command.

Many former Guardsmen took up this offer, and found that they were well treated and valued as line troops under their new commanders, against most expectations. While generally these Gue'Vesa were considered worthy allies, during the hard desert warfare of the Taros campaign some units of auxiliaries truly earned the respect and admiration of the Fire Caste warriors they fought beside. The tenacity and fighting spirit of these brave soldiers impressed their commanders too, who saw the spark of the Fire Caste within their souls.

Image

After the war was won, and the Imperium forces were driven back to their ships and away from Taros, these chosen units were offered the chance to attempt the training and initiation rituals of the Fire Caste, if they wished, and thus gain entry to the hallowed ranks of the Fire Warriors. Those who succeeded the trials were equipped with specially modified Tau armour and weapons, and given the honorary title of Shas. Known in the ranks of Gue'Vesa as "Chosen Men" and as Shas'Gue'La amongst the Tau themselves, these men have since served with distinction in several Hunter Cadres across the Empire. Particularly skilled in desert warfare, and renowned for their tactical flexibility and capacity for improvisation when needed, they are carving out a fierce and honorable reputation in the Empire.

Image

Human Fire Warriors are controversial with many of the more conservative elements of the Fire Caste, but all who have served with them have had their doubts wiped away, as their human compatriots fight with all the skill, bravery and passion expected of all Fire Warriors.

They are paragons of the potential Humanity has in service of the Greater Good.

ENTRY FIVE - "Spectres" Pathfinder team

Image
Team leader
Jayne Normandy is a former rogue trader and now a gue'vesa of the Tau Empire. Her ship, the "Star Sheperd", was destroyed by a small force of Necrons. Her still living body was rescued from the wreckage by a Tau patrol lead by the cruiser Sith'del. She helped to fight against the Necron threat and in three years of mission, she assembled a multi-racial team of scouts named the "Spectres" who like being assigned on the most dangerous missions.

Her "Spectres" team is currently composed of:
Image

- Garroo was a kroot shaper who lost his sense of "genetic smell". Useless for his former kindred, he offered his services to Jayne to have a new kindred. He is a skillful hunter and sniper.
- "Grizzli" is the recon drone of the Spectres, named after the childhood stuffed bear of Jayne. Strangely, its IA answers only to the name of "Escort". It is also field-equipped with straps and pads to quickly transport four team members.
- Zalira was a dark eldar hellion, but completely brainwashed by a powerful psyker and now behaving like a newborn. Childishly amazed by a speaking drone she named "Shika", she like to ride it on battle, and harmlessly "killing" people with markerlight.
- 3V4 is the callcode of the team Devilfish IA. Referring itself as "her" as a result of programming error, she has a support drone counterpart to help the team when they get in mission on foot.
- Tsi'ara, a mysterious alien awakened in an ancient stasis pod, with no memory aside two words which became her name. Her grace matches her psychic skill to fly, protect herself or repel enemies. She seems mute, as she can communicate only with Jayne's bonded mind.
- Kivaj was encountered on a primal world, riding flying lizards. His tribe believe to be the first beings in the universe, but hunted after by machines. Kivaj joined Jayne's team for the adventure, jetpack flight and the sounds of mass pulse fire.
- "Vegas" in an human who was rescued from cultists on Vegas III. Telling a story that he was selected to be an Astartes, he never says twice the same chapter name. His real name is unknown, as he answers only to his planet's name.
- Kim "Ash" Wilhelm was a PDF squad leader who was saved from the destruction of her homeworld. She named herself "The last Ash of Eden" because she's the only one who escaped the massive fires of the beautiful jungles of her world.

Image

Their ride is a Devilfish named "Sheperd Revenge 2" (or "SR-2"), as the former "Sheperd Revenge" was destroyed in a Carnifex charge the mission after it helped to destroy a Monolith. His pilot alias is "Jockey" and he's the only Tau of the team, an Air caste pilot who was rescued and who now saves their lives with his pilot skills.

ENTRY SIX - Kroot Snipers

Image

The stats of the sniper drone team and the kroot carnivore squad with sniper rounds is relatively close. The main difference on the weapon is the distance, I'm going to justify by using "charged sniper rounds", it also enhanced the AP value.

Image

The sniper spotter I'm justifying by using a human veteran(BS4) that is converted to the empire, with access to some of the tau equipment, he is now BS5.

The kroot are known for fast pace evolving by eating the dead, this kroot kindred grew feather wings, lighter bone frame for flight.

"Aun O'reo, the Necron Lord Imotekh has been driven back for now, I worried that we may not have enough fighting capability to withstand another assault and.." said Commander Milck.

"Then we shall use the Kauyon. It is time for the experimental auxiliary regiment to shine at the frontline. The Gue'vesa are veterans and the kroots are eager. This will also serve as a bonding ritual between two of our most numerous citizens." replied Aun O'reo.

Image

Modeling description:
I use the Dark Eldar Scourges as my main component for the kroot snipers; attached kroot arms, modeled a chicken butt with green stuff to the body. I sized up the actual kroot heads and they looked a little too big proportionally, and their hair got in the way of the wings.

The sniper team spotter was mainly IG cadian and tau fire warrior parts: tau head with antenna snipped as I ran out of them, cadian torso with eagle scrapped, tau arms with extra finger modeled with green stuff, madrobot kneeling leg(any IG leg would probably do), pathfinder pulse pistol bit tack glued on the belt.

ENTRY SEVEN - XV102 Vanguard scout battlesuit

Counts-as Vespid built with Pathfinder, Firewarrior and Stealthsuit components, plus plasticard wings, with a Longstrike Stingwing

Image Image

Image

A Meeting of Equals
DRAMATIS PERSONAE
Aun'el (Ka'pi Tau'n; The Strike Director. Guiding hand of the orbiting forces)
Kor'o (Dal'yth Ukos; Captain of the flagship "Tool of the Ethereals", the Aun'Ukos)
Por'o (Dal'yth M'yen'hui; The Unseen Hand.)
Fio'o (Dal'yth Eur'ii'va; By Hard Work, Success.)
Shas'o (T'olku Mal'caor; Commander Firespider. Competent but unimaginative)
Shas'vre (N'dras Y'eldi; The Winged One. Test pilot and noted stealthsuit veteran.)

A ringed table. At it's centre sits AUN'EL, with representatives of each cast spread around the edge.

Enter Y'ELDI.

POR'O [With forced enthusiasm] Welcome to our conclave, Shas'vre N'dras Y'eldi!

Y'ELDI approaches the group and bows towards AUN. As she rises, this morphs into a salute to SHAS'O.

SHAS'O At ease, Shas'vre. [Y'ELDI relaxes] As you know, the ork raiders were able to land several craft on the planet below. This conclave exists to discuss our options for repelling them.

A faint blue hologlobe appears above the collected company, with the ork landing sites marked as red wounds a desert away from major cities.

KOR'O Essentially correct, Commander, though I suspect landing to be a rather generous description of their descent. We may have let them through, but they were not unharmed.

POR'O That's the good news. Sadly, even with that set back we anticipate enemy forces will reach the capital within three days.

Y'ELDI [Considering the globe] Presuming their vehicles survived "landing", yes?

FIO'O Quite. I know it sounds unlikely, but previous experience has taught me to expect the worst when it comes to ork engineering.

A brief silence.

AUN'EL I suspect you have realised why we asked you to join us, yes? [Y'ELDI cocks her head, then nods] Go ahead.

Y'ELDI The XV102 Vanguard scout battlesuit. You want to proceed to combat testing.

FIO'O Indeed!

Y'ELDI We only have one complete prototype, though; we haven't even considered combat deployment, aerodynamics under fire, the power grid -

SHAS'O [cutting in] We understand your concerns. The earth caste team believe they can assemble additional units from earlier prototype designs and a little ingenuity. I have five pathfinder volunteers picked out to train under you in the short time we have; what I need to know is whether you are willing to fight in the Vanguard suit.

Y'ELDI I... Well... We will serve the Greater Good.

AUN'EL [Short chuckle] A fair answer to, perhaps, an unfair question. I think we should allow the Fio'O to explain the details of his plan. Eur'ii'va?

FIO'O [With a start, as though day dreaming] Thank you Aun'el. Attaching the old prototypes to combat armour isn't the hard bit. The hard bit is getting proper flight performance out of them. We haven't got time to build in new onboard flight AIs to help direct the thrust, so I propose we slave flight operations directly to your suit. It will mean extra strain on your role but in doing so you can have company along for the ride, as it were.
As for the power grid issues, one of my engineers has suggested directing the energy spikes into a crystal capacitor embedded in a neutron pulser design her team were already working on. Her tests this morning show it cutting through 4 layers of fio'tak.

Y'ELDI Even so, why are we rushing this project? What is the point of this trial? Aun'el Ka'pi Tau'n, what use are a handful in this fight?

AUN'EL There is something my mentor taught me. A lesson he learned whilst walking beside the fire caste through some of the worst conflicts our Empire saw. "The right tool at the right time can do the work of dozen." I have seen this battlesuit in flight and I believe that Commander Firespider could do good work with such a tool.
The question remains. Will you be that tool, Shas'vre N'dras Y'eldi?

Y'ELDI [Pause. Y'ELDI looks to SHAS'O, before turning back to AUN'EL.] I will serve the Greater Good.

ENTRY EIGHT - The ODT(count as Krootox in Gue'vesa la'rua.)

The ODT (Orbital Drop Trooper) is a sub-branch of the GAC (Gue'vesa Auxiliary Corp) and was only recently formed because of the vast Kor'vattra (Tau navy) of the Tau'n Sept. With such resources at their disposal, limited experimental units were formed using some of the more common battlefield doctrines encountered from the Imperium. There are other ODT members in several Septs but the vast majority served within Tau'n. However, the Tau still value all life equally and could not condone sending a unit, even a Gue'vesa unit, into a heavily contested dropzone where the casualty rates was sure to be high. And thus, the ODT was formed to perform LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols) deep inside enemy held worlds, where the most common method of insertion was to have their drop pods follow debris into the atmosphere, to appear as a natural phenomenon to the more advance enemies they may face.

Such a method would mean using a DSI entry(Deep Space Insertion. The human troopers have unsurprisingly called it "Dizzy" entry) whereby their pods would be launched from a Tau vessel beyond the edge of enemy sensors and would use inertia to navigate to their target world. This could take anywhere from a few weeks to months in the silence of space. Another noted benefit as to why the ODT was allowed to form, was because of their potential to infiltrate hostile human populations of the Imperium with relative ease. And thus the requirements to be selected as an ODT as one could imagine is quite stringent.

- A Gue'vesa'la has to be a 5th generation citizen of the Tau Empire.
- A Gue'vesa'la has to have natural fieldcraft. Most of the Gue'vesa'la ODT are drawn from the frontier or the Commonwealth worlds.
- A Gue'vesa'la has to have the mental fortitude to withstand long periods in the void of space without going 'stir crazy'.
- A Gue'vesa'la has to have initiative to continue the mission even without the presence of a superior officer.

Thus far they have proven to be an effective and loyal fighting force

The T33
"Typical of Shas'ar'tol. I request for more suits and they send me relics... and its not even for us!" - Commander ****** of 103rd Tau'n Recon Cadre

The T33 was rushed into production from refitted experimental units from the XV25s project. Gathering dusts in warehouses, the large suits (due to the nature of technology, concepts are usually tested out on larger models before being miniaturized in their current modern form)were slated to be disposed and recycled, the Earth Caste was about to proceed when they received a request from Shas'ar'tol to develop a weapon for Gue'vesa use. At this point in time the ODT had undergone several missions and it was found that they were inadequately equipped to deal with light to medium enemy vehicles when engaged during operation or while extricating themselves from their target.

They clamored for suitable equipment and Shas'ar'tol having noted how effective these teams were, decided to grant them their request. And thus the T33 was created. Powered by the old fuel engines of the T series of battle suits and armed with a weapon closer to classification as the missile pod or rail rifle, the advantage is that the battlesuit can carry far more ammunition into battle, perfect for prolonged operations without the chance of a resupply in the foreseeable future. Later models were even equipped with a long range surface to orbit transmitter, thus becoming the hub and life line of the ODT in the field.

ENTRY NINE

Image

A small kindred of Kroot were paid to provide protection for a black market trader who was going to a deadly, tundra moon to trade with a rival trader that had kidnapped his wife. As soon as the convoy disembarked their ship was destroyed and a firefight broke out.

Only a small number of the kindred survived and without any means to leave the planet their only option was to survive, and wait for rescue. They managed to find some food and shelter but the snow storms began to worsen. As they started to struggle to find shelter they noticed that the planet’s inhabitants would burrow underground for warmth. The shaper saw this trait as their only chance of survival and sent the kindred on a genetic path to become a Kroogon.

Image

They grew an extra pair of arms that ended in scythe like blades to chip away at the solid ground, like a pick axe, their bones became soft and malleable which caused their legs to no longer be needed and so a snake like tail replaced it allowing them to slither through the small gaps underground. To hunt they developed a pheromone in their saliva that would mark out their prey, which they could track through the tunnels, and kill with deadly spines that they fire from their arms.

Image

Eventually they were rescued by a small Tau contingent that landed on the moon to mine it for Ore, the kindred on board discovered that Kroogon and got them to join the Empire.

Since they’re excellent hunters they became part of the Pathfinder unit, Fio’El Miik’orui made alterations to the Fire castes optics to see the pheromones in the Kroogon’s saliva, allowing it to work similarly to the Marker light, but due to the Kroogon’s living underground for so long they have to wear breathing apparatus to make up the different atmosphere and air pressure.

Thanks! I'm humbled by the response to my entry, particularly looking at the ingenuity displayed by the other entries here. There's a great number of ideas I'm looking forward to "borrowing" - for one thing, there's a whole box of spare Wood Elf components beside me I've never thought of using in 40k work. Daft, I know, but sometimes a whack on the side of the head is needed to see the obvious.

Although I don't have many photos of the work-in-progress, I could put together some design notes if there is interest. The most obvious feature - the wings - evolved from my marker drone design, of which a tutorial recently resurfaced from the warp...

Thanks again to Blueshock, Tael and their support team for facilitating this event and tapping the community's creativity and looking forward to seeing more of the designs that didn't quite meet the deadline. And don't forget to break the second place deadlock!

Congratulations to everyone, specially our winner and our thrice-tied (!) 2nd place.
Thanks for people who offer their votes to my entry.

Nice job for all of those who get into the contest. Your entries were interesting and I am happy to see all the Replacement teams gathering with my "Spectres" to defend our Orbital.
To celebrate this, I offer to all of the contestants the opportunity to have a hi-res render of my Riptide 3D model in the pose and paint scheme you want (you can ask to match a specific background too and I will see if I can proceed it).
Just send a PM to me with photo/drawings/ideas for me to work on. The loadout is free, as long as it is in the Riptide box, so dual HBC is OK (for example).

For those who can't share their ideas for time issue, be sure we will check the future topics for more ideas and we hope you jump in a future contest.

Thanks to Blueshock, Tael and all the team working behind the curtain to make this possible.

I wish to thank you (the community) for all of your participation in this year's event and look forward to the next. Congrats to our winners.
-Rizzle with 1st place
-BabaGanoosh and MacKnight tied for 2nd place
-I believe the 3rd place winner would've been Kael'yn's "Spectres" (correct me if I'm wrong here, I was going by vote count I saw on the OP)

All winning entrants should've been contacted by now by myself or Tael and I will have the prizes sorted and sent out asap. If there are any concerns or issues please let me know.

Thanks again to the guys who helped make this project happen, but ultimately it is the community as a whole here at ATT who made all of this possible. I wish to especially thank Sebastian (Tael) for all of his support and willingness to coordinate/cooperate/support with me and the team who pushed this event ('Uis, 'Vres and "Os alike), Modelglue for his support and assistance in organizing this event, and my padna' (event coordination partner) Czar Ziggy for his ideas and assistance with the details and presentation to the mods/community.

I just want to say to everyone, don't let this be the end of it. Keep being creative and coming up with new ideas/conversions and awesome Tau to fight for the greater good! It was wonderful to see everyones entries and I look forward to seeing everyone who unfortunately couldn't get everything together by the deadline as I'm sure those units will be wonderful once completed as well.

Hi Guys,

Busy week, but finally moving forward with the Avatar art.

Here are the initial sketches and line workings - any critiques lads? Scoot me a PM so I can keep track :)

There's a fifth for a fellow Admin member in there too. (Glasses lad)

So we have XV Pilot lass, Gue'Vesa Spotter calling in the rain, early work on a tank commander with scarf and a new alien avatar for Babaganoosh :)
