Deathwatch Army - Hammer Time!

For the last year or so, I have been slowly and quietly gathering more and more Space Marines and components from various friends. Having sorted them and realised that I could make up about 70 Marines, I thought it was about time I got painting them. Using the new codex rumours, I intend to pick the models and rules which best represent the Deathwatch to me (the Sternguard were just screaming out for my attention), and try to weld them in to some sort of usable army. I will try to update this with new pictures, in the hope of actually motivating myself to paint faster than usual (who knows, it might even work!).

So, first up is the Sternguard sergeant. I have completed a squad of five, but the pictures of all but the sergeant were terrible. All of them are conversions using only the plastic kits and a little greenstuff. C&C are of course welcome, and I would also appreciate your ideas for how I should base them (lava, snow, desert, whatever you think would set them off well.

I think this is great. My son has done pretty much the same thing with left over parts from my and my brother bits boxes and has two 10 man squads that he has painted as Death Watch. We have played games together were his DW is a ally of mine and he has a lot of fun. We're excited aobut Black Reach as my son wants the Sm's and my daughter want the Orks and Dad wants the rules!

What parts were used in this sargent? It looks like you have a spacewolf cape, and the tassle also. It looks pretty good for a cobbled together fig. And you can make 70 of them? Thats quite a pile of left overs!

Good luck and lets see some more!

Lo Jar-Jar - we meet again!

Glad to hear your DW boys are coming along. Atleast they are not included as an Elites chocie in the new SM codex (I have my sources) but I think you wanna keep them DW pure as a HQ choice, and justequip the rest of the Tacticals as close to as possible.

Might I suggest that any vehicles you take are tracked, as it fits the gritty look of them.

Given the multi-chapter nature of DW, the idea of jump troops or speeders and the such, any specialists, seems a bit unfitting, whilst anyone can ride a bike, and servitors can pilot the tanks.

Plus, given the slightly suicidal natutre of most of their missions, whats easier to replace, skimmers or tracked?

Keep em coming, then your boys and Death Watch Nova can team up for some Apoc scale Bug Squish!

Re: PiP - Plastic Deathwatch Army - Now with more Pics

Well, I have been hard at work improving my camera skills, and it seems to have paid off.

First up, thanks for the compliments. The Sergeant, and in fact the whole squad, are made using pieces from the Command Squad, Commander, and Tactical marine sprues, as well as some bits from the Space Wolf, Black Templars and Dark Angels upgrade sprues for some of the members. The specialised bolters use the ammo hopper from the SM vehicle sprue's storm bolter, and the sergeant's left arm is the one more often found holding a missile launcher.

I don't really intend to take many vehicles, so that's not really a problem. As for jump pack troops, there is nothing to stop an Assault Marine being seconded to the Deathwatch, so rather than force them to use a bolter, they would be banded together in to small, specialised units. For this reason, I intend to have only one Assault Squad, which will consist of only five marines. I do plan to have a squad of Vanguard veterans as well, but I figure that has more to do with the inevitable numbers of power weapons that Marines recalled to the Deathwatch would have. Suicidal missions or not, I do want some of them to survive!

So, on to the pics, and apologies for the number of them.

I have also been working on the first of my Inquisitor's henchmen. Yep, it is a beastman in Guard's clothing...

C&C welcome as usual, and I hope you enjoy them.

Ok, time for a little update. I have been a little sidetracked in to redecorating the kitchen, but I have got a test piece together for the bases I want to use. Ok, they are Rippers, but I had them lying around, and it gave me a chance to try 'Nid themed scenery (the Gaunt claw). So, what do you think?

I think I may end up using these little guys as mascots for the DW; let's face it, they are never better than when they see 'Nids! :P

EDIT:

Well, despite the seeming lack of interest, I will continue to add to the thread. Latest model to add to the ranks is a Truescaled Chapter Master, who will eventually be using Pedro Kantor's rules.

Once more, this time with a Heavy Weapon marine for size comparison:

Enjoy!

The Grenn-Foo is strong in you! Really, your sculpting is brill. He is a little big though, isn't he? I mean, ok, add 5mm, but isn't he about twice as tall?

With the painting, I think you could benefit from thinning down all of your paints a bit, as some of the detail is being obscured. Also, try inking/washing, especially on faces.

It's going well, though.

Thanks, aliosha. I will admit, he turned out a bit larger than I expected, but it's less noticable on the battlefield than you might think. It also helps put the fear of the Emperor in to the opponent a little more! ;)

The pics on the Sternguard aren't great (I'm working on it), so I think they look a little better in real life than they seem here. As for the poor plasma caddy, it was one of the first models I bought, and oh how I hate it! The metal bits fall off, he falls over, and on top of that the pose is a bit silly. I found him and decided to strip and pin it before having another go at painting him. Unfortunately, what you see is what I get for trying to convince myself that I can speed-paint. Oh well, back to spending hours on each model! :P Sometimes I wonder why I went for a footslogging marine army...

Well, I finally got round to the Chaplain! I haven't decided on a Chapter for him yet (Red Hunters seems a possibility), hence the lack of pads, but here he is:

I think the photographs are washed out by too much direct light: These are actually quite good. The Chaplain especially, and the incoming Pedro Kantor has a lot of potential.

Do you have an army list for us?

Thanks for the comments! No army list I'm afraid - I tend to play around with them quite a bit depending what units I want to try this time, and I'm still figuring out the Marines due to a lack of gaming time. I hope to get some work done on them soon now that I have some spare time, starting with stripping all the old and badly painted members of my force, changing out a load of the sergeants' weapons (Still set up for 4th ed) and maybe even giving them the right shoulderpads.

Once I get up the confidence (and a little bit of practice), I'll try my hand at painting the Chapter Master, who now has a backpack-mounted auxillary grenade launcher for no particular reason.

These look pretty awesome dude. I've always been fascinated with the Deathwatch and when I get around to creating a Marine force it will probably be them. Thanks for the awesome models and as long as you keep them coming I'll be watching. :)
