Mecha Front - Now LIVE on Kickstarter

2013 is shaping up to be a pretty big year for Paulson Games.

Several months back I announced that I had taken on a pretty large project, many of you have been asking what I was doing and I said I'd let you know when the time is right.

Now that things are running at full steam I figured I'd give everyone a small peek behind the curtain at what's coming up.

I'd like to introduce you guys to Mecha Front© which will be a tactical miniatures game centered around mecha combat. It will be a fast paced skirmish type game for two or more players. It takes all the things you love about western style mecha and boils it down to their raw essence. No singing ladies, no culture shocked giant aliens, no psy powered high school kids. This game is for gear heads who love raw gritty robot combat, smoking autocannon shells and the crack of deadly partical cannons.

The miniatures are shaping up to blow away all of my previous work. Renders will be posted soon and I'll be launching a Kickstarter to get things rolling. (details to come)

Next month is going to mark 5 years that I've been open, it's had it's ups and downs but through it all you guys have been awesome and I wouldn't change any of it. I appreciate all my past customers, it has been your support and encouragement that has helped me get to this point. I look forward to putting out a new line of miniatures that I'm sure you will enjoy.

Enough of my blabber, onto the pics!

Good to hear that this project is coming to fruition! I take it that the mechas here will be fully compatible with your existing range of weapons and such?

I like these designs. Congratulations on initializing this, it must have been quite a bit of work and build up to this point. What scale do you intend these to be?

I'll look forward to your kickstarter when the time comes... I just got my Leviathan Crusaders in the mail and I can't believe the wealth of gaming options we are getting these days with all this fantastic growth within the hobby.

Good luck Paulson.

Looking pretty dang sweet there.

What size are you thinking for these?

These are going to be N-scale so the mechs will be between 60-70mm depending on the weight class. They'll use 60mm bases, the the quads are huge and will use either 90mm bases or possibly 120mm.

So about the size of a Hazard suit for the bipeds and like a Dreadknight for the Quads?

How many mecha do you expect in a typical engagement with your rules?

Average game size is going to be 4-5 mecha per side as it's skirmish based.

I sold off my hazards about two years ago and I don't remember what they measure in at so I'm not sure how close it's be. (I think they were 60mm?) A standard crisis suit is around 55mm tall so 70mm would be almost an extra 50% taller.

If you have battletech stuff this gives an idea of the Nscale stuff vs the original models. The red Hatamoto-chi is about 65mm and Atlas is about 75mm. They are on 60mm bases so basically dreadnaught sized bases.

Ahh, I see. With only 4 to 5 mecha a side, are you thinking a smaller table size then?

Any plans to later add conventional vehicles and infantry to the line?

Looking good so far.

What are you going to be doing to differentiate the factions visually?

Currently I have designs two factions NorAm which is made of US & Canada. Their mechs tend to be of a more blocky body design. The Neo-Bloc Russia and China tend to be larger and have a more rounded look in their body designs. Cockpit and legs designs also differ Like modern armor and tanks there's not a huge gap in the designs at first glance but when you start going over the smaller details you'll see the variations.

That round vs angular motif does seem to show up in the current armoured vehicles produced by the parents of said factions. Though size it goes the other way, with the former communist nations preferring lighter equipment, but more of it. Still, since the IS series tanks it has been fun to imagine giant soviet armour crushing everything in its path, so might as well go with it.

It will be interesting to see how you develop the themes for other groups when you get the chance.

Those concept sketches look great, I love the amount of detail that portrays
what warfare may become in the not so far future.
It reminds me of an old game 'wargames defcon 1', but I can see so many
different influences from right across the board.
Looking forward to seeing some actual resin

I'm a day behind for holding my planned "Mecha Front Monday" preview so I'll have to make up with it with an extra piece. ;)

Gotta say I really like these designs... They really capture the sort of feeling that made the MechWarrior games great. I'll be watching this project closely!

Hnnngh, Metal Gear Rex FTW! PLEASE tell me that this fella will be NorAm, or whatever faction will have stuff like that! I'm digging these designs so far; they're far more 'realistic' to me at least than Mechwarrior, and I'm -really- liking the Chrome Hounds feel to them, like the second and third images for Neo-Bloc.

EDIT: My only complaint with the big four-legged fella is the off-center cockpit. A more recessed central one might better fit the aesthetic?

I like the off center cockpit on the large quad-leg mechs; it makes the model feel like an oversize piece of equipment, like a huge dump truck
