Hi all, Long time Lurker, First time poster.
I got a few games of 8th edition in over the weekend and there were some interesting and mixed results.
Trying out a battle report for the first time and if i can i'll write up my other two games against reg. Blood Angels and Blood Angel Primaris Marines later on.
On release day we had 6 guys together and played 50PL games, which taking every available upgrade took everyones list to roughly 1050 points. While it doesn't create an optimal list, the PL system was definitely quick and easy to get the games rolling.
For my first game I played Tyrranids in the Relic mission.
My list - +3CP detachment
Coldstar w/ATS and Shield Generator + 2 drones
Cadre Fireblade + 2 drones
3x Strike teams of 5 FW - Pulse RIfles, DS8 Turret and 2 drones each
Stealth Team - 1x FB, ML and Drone Controller, 2x Burst Cannon and ATS + 2 drones
Pathfinders - 5man -3 with rail rifles (in retrospect i forgot to add drones to this squad)
Pathfinders - 5xML + Recon drone, grav drone and Pulse drone
My Alpha strike -Crisis Team -all 3 with 2x FB and 1xflamer + 6 drones
Apart from the specialised drones, I took all gun drones.
I don't know his army well enough but he took:
1x swarm of running melee guys (I think they're gaunts)
Warriors and a Warlord that looks like a warrior
A big guy that deepstrikes with a squad of genestealers
and another big critter with some psychic power.
After the game he realised he had a spare unit that he never put on the table.
First turn for him was intimidating and looked bad for me as I'd set my stealth team up too far forward and perfect accuracy deepstrike looking to charge my troop blob is kinda scary.
I was saved by the stealth team being 2 levels up in ruins, so only about 5 'gaunts' got into combat, killing 2 drones and 1 stealth suit (that -1 to hit can be brutal on some enemies), and he failed 2 long range charges, which also let me kill 3 genestealers.
After that my guns totally melted through his troops to the point that from turn 2 onwards it wasnt competitive and we ended after 3 turns with only his big deepstrike critter on the board, while i was only missing 1 pathfinder squad a few drones and 1 very weakened Firewarrior team.
Some general thoughts.
-Rail Rifles scare people. They might be expensive and run counter to pathfinders purpose but they can also be pretty damn effective too
-A few squads of FW with a Fireblade and a pulse drone creates a crazy amount of shots that both deters charges and can hurt them in Overwatch badly when they do charge.
-Homing Beacon dropping 6 FB in range lets you almost guarantee a kill against any 1 unit you want gone.
-If his first turn charges had made it in, it would have been a very different story, but beyond that he would have been stuck running around ruins and cover to try flank me before charging.
-Horde Tau was a major success, but the opponent had a lot to do with its success.
