Doesn't Mega have an upper limit of S10 AP1? It's wasted points without submunitions.

Actually, while I'm here, this isn't very good. If you've got access to Apocalypse or IA Volume 1, look at the Hydra for an example of good AA power. That fires multiple AA shots, so it's reasonably likely to do something nasty despite the glancing-only rule for flyers, and has long range to overcome the fact that ground-based targets fire as if 12" further from the flyer than they really are.

A single plasma rifle is not useful AA power despite reasonable strength for attacking their weak armour. Unless the flyer is directly on top of the thing, it only gets one shot and the effective range of it is 12". AA Missile pods aren't bad, firing two shots, but are still slightly lacking in range. An ion cannon would be excellent for this purpose, but may be too expensive.

It does...so he should have taken with submunitions, then it would have made sense. Why the souped up engine though? With the main gun, you can just sit back and plug away at the other guy, not really needing to move

[[[ To OP, Mako is the correct spelling for that particular shark.

My creation, which started as a drawing back about 2002 is the Thresher Shark Tank Hunter.

Basically a turretless twin linked Railgun, after all is said and done weighs in at a reasonable price of about 220. I may have to re-calculate but it is a nice piece, and will hunt tanks nicely! ;)

If you look for my army pics, there are some pics of it in primer black, I am currently busy working on painting this beastie! :)

I've wasted lots of time doing this. The best I made was this. (mind you this is just the gun)

1 X AA Twin-Linked Gatling Long-Barrelled Mega Blast Titan Killer Railgun (with submunitions) + Co-axial Ion cannon 525 pts.

Thats a big gun for a lot of points. Ah, now how to model such a beast. (Is it even legal to have all this on one weapon?)

It is legal if your opponent doesnt mind...and there is the problem, because most people aren't going to allow something that crazy on the table :?

And that's why when I design something, I carefully unerpower it to make it clear that I'm not trying to get the edge through a custom unit. It has worked great to get my opponent to agree to use it.

I do like it when people remind me this is here.
I've been having great fun with the idea of little gun platform type things like Shas'La had on page one.
light vehicle
Armour 10-9-9 (it's free to upgrade the front to 10... nice)
Open topped
Burst cannon
15 points each!

Bumps the price up quite a lot to give that the skimmer ability, but I'm thinking drones on little legs, to look kinda like mini walkers from war of the worlds, with the burst cannon mounted underneath.

Would be nice to have them deep strike too, but I can't find that as an option...

And here is a stunning example of why the VDR rules were broken. :) They're nice for giving ball park figures for well planned out units, but it's far too easy to make broken units like this. If you're using the VDR and trying to make the most point efficient unit you can, you're probably going to end up with something that isn't exactly fair for your opponent.

Why wont it let me make a proper Manta??

Name Points Front Armour Side Armour Rear Armour BS
Manta 1686 12 11 10 3
Type:
Flyer Size:
War machine Speed:
Flyer
Weapons:
16 x Long-barrelled Burst Cannon
3 x Twin-linked Long-barrelled Ion Cannon
1 x Twin-linked Long-barrelled Mega Titan-killer Railgun (with Submunitions)
1 x Twin-linked Missile Pod
Special Options:
Transport 56
1 x Tau field
Orbital lander
Escape Pods
Vehicle Category:
War machine
Structure Points:
10

It wouldn't let me make the armour values or transport capacity higher. Also there are no Markerlights or seekers...
But I gues if you want a cheap Manta, here it is...

The VDR is for custom stuff. Forge world uses their own version I think and tweaks things.

For example, VDR - LB Burst Canon = 27" FW - LB BC = 36"

OK, looking at this I see an option and the very bottom called 'Tau Escape Pods.' What are these?

EDIT: Thanks, Peregine!

I'm not 100% sure if this is what the VDR rules are referring to, as they seem to use some old terms/rules, but Tau fliers have an escape pod for the crew. It works kind of like the ejection system for battlesuits, you place the pod marker, scatter like deep striking (and if it goes off the table edge, it counts as escaped), then get a couple crew models. They're not really useful in combat, but it can save you the kill point if you keep them alive.
