[Project Log] BFG Tau fleet (Orca Gunship new model)

A friend of mine got recently his hands on some forgeworld BFG tau models on ebay. Those things are nowadays ludicrously expensive if you want to field a reasonable sized fleet, so he is going to clone them and I'm going to ask him for some copies. The thing is that, while the forgeworld ship designs are incredibly good, the original games workshop ships look like utter crap in comparison. As I don't like to be limited in my options fielding ships in a game, I have set to the task of remodelling them to reduce the eyesore factor while maintaining the design features of the original ships (fluff wise, kor'vattra ships were awfully outdated in comparison with the kor'or'vesh). I will post here any updates on my future fleet to be if someone want to replicate my designs or something.

To begin with, my friend couldn't get a warden or an emissary to clone, so I created a warden completely from scratch for him. I have done a test cast (it's a bit crappy here and there, but since is a test I don't specially care) and here are the results of my first paint test scheme.

Next ship in line will be the messenger escort.

Okay, this is excellent - look forward to the messenger class. Impressive scratchbuild given the shaping.

Thanks! That model was made with green stuff cast with instant mold. I used it to test my scheme, so I didn't put special attention to the minor imperfections. The final models will be cast in resin with a master of higher quality. I have also created new models for the messenger, the defender and the orca, and the original tau orbital (rules and modular functionality of the games workshop model, aesthetics of the forgeworld orbitals) and I'm also working in the explorer and the hero. My objective is to create ships that don't clash too badly with the amazingly beautiful models of forgeworld while retaining the distinctive characteristics of the old vessel line. I have begun painting the messenger and will post pics soon, the rest will follow not long after.

Re: [Project Log] BFG Tau fleet [New Messenger Model]

Well, as promised, here is my version of the Messenger escort. Again, I'm sorry that the quality of the model is sub-par, but this is, like all the models I will show here for the moment, a green stuff cast from a quick mold, for testing purposes. To create this ship, I used the philosophy of semicircular prow and long 'neck' of all the BFG GW ships, but, as you can see, I have used the engine and wing design of the FW line, more in line with tau aesthetics. As a nod to this ship purpose, I have fitted it with a sensor dome, very much like an AWACS (and this class of ship fill exactly that role in the Kor'Vattra). I really hope this new design will help the old ships to merge visually better with the FW ships.

Here you have it alongside a Warden (for scale purposes)

Next ship in line will be the humble Orca.

You really capture the Tau essence, and its nice to see something outside the 28mm range. Job well done.

Well done! It really looks like a Tau ship, which some conversions don't quite do. I am interested to see more from you.

This has rekindled my interest in BFG along with the footage from the new PC game. Maybe I should dust off my Kor'or'vesh fleet and have a go. :)

As promised, here is the Orca. The older brother to the Warden, this one was easier to concept than the Messenger, as it's just a longer, slimmer version of the Warden. Of course, it keeps the design features of semicircular prow and long neck, prevalent in all GW models.

Here it is with the other models to showcase the scale and style

Rear view. I wanted to give it the engine power of the warden, but to distinguish it from the FW model, I went for a stacked design for the engines.

Front view. All my ships will have their id names in the prow, Enterprise style.

Next ship in line will be the defender. Stay tuned.

Man... lovely work, very clever renditions indeed. This is GS and plasticard only right?

Basically yes. At least the masters. If I manage to convince my friend to get to work and cast them, then I will have a nice bunch of lovely resin models to paint.

Here is a WIP photo of the models. As you can see I was also making a transport ship and preparing a space orbital. Unfortunately I did not made a test cast for the finished transport, but the orbital will appear here soon after the defender.

NIce - your detail work with card bits is great. And the transport... of course the shield generator; has to be one of the most repurposed parts in Tau history :D

These are amazing conversions. Keep up the hard work. I love how they are close but far enough to off that they look like brand new models. They could even be some new classes.

I have made them like I envisioned they should had been designed from the beginning, if we assume the standard look of the tau vehicles is that depicted in illustrations, 40k, and the forgeworld ranges. Forgeworld just have better designers, I guess.
