The Nightwind Cadre - Mike's Glacial Tau - Now with Manta

Hi All,

First time posting on the Advanced Tau Tactica project logs!

My Tau Nightwind Cadre started waaaaaay back when the 1st Edition of the Tau Codex was released, unfortunately life (i.e. Work, Pub and an unhealthy addiction to World of Warcraft) and spending too long on each model meant that aside from a few, my models never got painted!

However, of late with my local tale of many gamers and kicking off a project that has been on my to do list for 10 years, I'm back and making some head way.

I originally had this project log running over on Warseer, but since the photo crash of 2106 there is not much activity in the Xenos threads, so I'm hoping the dedicated Tau community out there can keep me motivated to push on.

This project is a long term thing as my Nightwind Cadre will just keep geting bigger, once I've cleared the backlog of Tau on my work station.

While the army is in progress, in the background I will be working on my 10 years in the making project, my Tau Manta which has been languishing in a box for almost 10 years.

Image

The Manta is more a complex engineering project rather than a model, so don't expect progress to be quick.

Comments, suggestions and advice are always welcome.

Cheers,
Valaas

As a quick follow up on the first post, I thought I'd post a model with some paint on it....

Here is my first Riptide, which recently took silver in its category in the GW Aberdeen Golden Trolls painting competition, beaten into second by a truly immense converted Tzeentch Deamon which went on to win best in show.

Oh, man. Welcome aboard, it's great to have you. That Manta is an impressive project. As much as I like the model I'm not sure I would want to accept that undertaking. There's a whole lot of assembly and painting that goes into that. If your Riptide is anything to go by, however, it'll be great when finished. Having a project that epic means there will be no shortage of people egging you on, eager to see every little bit of progression.

Welcome to ATT and, uh, good luck.

You do lenses very much like I do. It's a simple trick with great results.

Do you play this as an Enclaves army, or does it just happen to share the colors?

Hmm seeing peoples progression and selection of colors nowdays I start to wonder if I selected a bad paint scheme. Love the painting and choices of color.

My lenses technique is nice and simple, but very effective:

1) Base green colour
2) Darker green above
3) Lighter green round the lower edge
4) Small dot of white at the top of the dark green
5) Coat of ard'coat to give it a gloss finish

Sound familiar? I did some trials of the new GW 'Gem' paints, but just didn't look as good and in reality didn't save any time.

I'll post a bit on my Tau's fluff in the future, but they are not an enclave force (though the temptation to build the '8' is strong), but one from Vio'rla. The inspiration for the scheme actually came from an old Star Wars graphic novel, which focused on Palpatine's Imperial Guard and followed their uniforms, since then it has grown arms and legs!

Rank an file are usually red armour with black cloth, with officers in reverse and specialists like pathfinders and snipers with black helms.

Thanks for the compliment themoogle, I've taken a look at your thread and really like your scheme, its one of the good things about tau, so many combinations look good. You have the two colour scheme with a third spot colour that I think looks great. I'll take a closer look at your thread tonight and post some comments.

I have a few photo's to sort out, but hope to post some more Manta progress tonight.

I do two small dots of white. One in the middle of the light green, and one in the middle of the dark. Otherwise our methods are identical. It's easy to do and gives a great effect.

Time for an update....

So I have split the Manta in to several distinct sub-assemblies, which breaks it down into nice bite size chunks.

First sub assembly consists of:

- 2x upper Fuselage
- 1x Lower Front Fueselage
- 4x Fire Control Consoles
- 4x Fire Control Seats
- 4x Air Caste Operators
- 1x Fire Control Access Ladder

The first task was to straighten one of the upper fuselages as a combination of old style FW casting and 9 years in storage had made it wavy...thankfully it straightened out well.
Image

Due to the relatively small contact area I drilled 4 holes and inserted 4 pins to give it a bit more strength:

Then she was glued using 2 part araldite and clamped into position with a bungee used at the rear to keep the rear ends tight and straight to avoid problems later:

The fire control corridor, needs to be painted now, including the consoles, seats and air caste before anymore building can take place, as after the next stage they would become impossible to paint.

As always comments, questions and suggestions always welcome.

A great scheme, and now I look forward to your peicing together of the giant! How did you "unbend" the wavy? Hot water bath?

Thanks for the feedback Teal. :D

The wavy was unbent through multiple very hot water baths of the specific section, with gentle manipulation, allow to cool, then repeat until I had it straight. It can be extra difficult when your dealing with thick bits of resin. There will definitely be some components too thick to bend, which will mean filling but, I'll cross that bridge and provide details when I get to them.

As an update for the rest of the Nightwind Cadre, here are some WIP and final shots of my Piranha Squadron.

The transfer on the side is upside-down. The line and dot should have the line on the bottom, since it's the Tau character for zero.
Aside from that, those are fantastic. It makes me want to rebuild my own Piranhas.

Ooooops.....

I'm going to go with...written upside down on purpose so they're enemies can read it when their inverted....ala 'Top Gun'! ;)

Not that I thought it looked cool that way and hadn't even thought to check out what it actually said!

I have to say that after painting 3 in a row, I'd be glad to not see one on my painting desk for some time (though I have a TX-42 sitting waiting to be built!)

And now, in the words of Monty Python, for something completely different.

Photos below are of the first of my Kroot Knarloc riders, this one was fully complete however in the recent house move his fore-claws have come off and chipped so badly it will be a strip and start again job. I'll get round to them when I paint up his 2 pack mates, until then he can be know as stumpy.

I have used red and black 'War Paint' on my Kroot, to tie them with the rest of my army, while maintaining their distinct look.

You never cease to impress with your collection of Forge World goodies. I always loved the striated skin on the Knarlocs. The war paint is cool too, I never thought to do that for my Kroot (not that I use them anymore).

Just a short update...

The Nightwind Cadre has been bolstered by a sniper and his attendant sniper drones:

And even the Cadre's Manta is showing a bit of progress, with the Fire Command and Control Corridor receiving a lick of paint!

Excellent work on the sniper team, that'll look sharp on the table. The Manta is undergoing good progress too. Do you plan to hand brush the whole thing, or are you going to make significant use of an airbrush/spray cans?

Thanks for the great comments.

Manta will be a combination of brush work and airbrush, brush work for the more detailed confined sections, such as the cockpit, fire control etc and then air brush and sprays for the externals and large internal areas.

As always my problem with my airbrush is getting the block of free time to use it.....but watch this space.

Once the fire control corridor is complete the build will recommence, with no more painting required until it is complete.

I've got a lot on my list at the moment, but hope to do the air caste controllers and their consoles while painting other tau units.

Cheers,
Valaas
