UPDATED 12/03/17 - Stealth Suits & building progress! (see top of page 2...)

Hi Guys,

Some of you may have seen a couple of my posts over in the painting section! I have recently embarked on a new Tau army, after a hiatus of about 10 (!) years from the hobby. Tau were always the army that captured my imagination, so I have returned to them for my first project!

To motivate myself I have decided to make a blog of the project and share my progress with you all!

Theme:

For me, Tau are all about mobility, precision, and application of precise firepower. I have never been enamoured of the gun line style, that is what Astra Millitarum are for. With that in mind I am going for a mechanised, mobile, CQC theme. I am combining this with a special forces / stealth theme, driven by my love of the stealth suit models, and the Ghostkeel - which didn't exist when I was playing before.

So here are my first models! I hope you like them, constructed criticism is sincerely appreciated, I have been out of this for a long time!!

First Breacher Team:

Breachers didn't exist when I used to play, I love the new models and they fit my theme perfectly!

Devilfish:

Clearly my boys need a ride! This was really used as a proof of concept that I could translate the colour scheme to battle suits & vehicles.

Image

Image

Ensemble Shots:

So you can see how the colours match up, given the contrast of the camo on the 'fish vs the matt grey on the breachers.

Thanks for your time! I will be updating with new models as consistently as I can. My aim is to have 750-1000 points completed in the next 2-3 months!

Any comments or suggestions sincerely appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Really like the color scheme. What is the purpose of the pouches on the side? Are they claymores?

Excellent work, neonmole! I love the theme of your cadre—although I am a bit biased because I share your appreciation of mechanized Tau, mobility and CQC/MOUT.

Your painting is very clean, and the weathering and camo on the devilfish are top notch.

If I may, what paints and colors are you using for this great color scheme?

I wholeheartedly agree! This is a beautiful scheme and as I too am getting back into Tau, was looking for a scheme similar to this, that reminds me of a darker Sa'cea.

Wow that scheme has really come up well and I really like the organic cammo on the devilfish, tried similar on a XV8 but was kind of leary at doing it across a Devilfish chassis :D

Completely agree on a matte route for the finish.

Thanks so much for the kind words guys! I really do appreciate it, such a motivator to keep going when its tough to find the time between real life & everything else!!

So I wanted to find a way to use the colours I chose for the undersuits on the vehicles for some coherency &I wanted the armour to be uniformly camo so that wasn't an option... I came up with the pouches based upon pictures of real world fighting vehicles - APC's, helicopters etc. I like the idea of "saddle bags", I imagine the teams might keep things in there that they need quick access to in the field! Could be ammo, tools, or whatever. Or maybe mines as per your suggestion!

The models are sprayed Mechanicus grey, covered in Nuln Oil, then Eshin Grey for the main colour. The highlights / the camo is Mechanicus grey again. Brown is steel legion drab, agrax earth shade, tallarn sand, and karak stone.

Thankyou so much for the compliment! It really means a lot coming from you, I have long admired your work, and it was infact when I saw your urban models (about 10 years ago!) that I began thinking of this scheme. It has been incubating in my head since then!

I promise I will have some more in the coming weeks - I have just finished assembling a stealth team & a ghostkeel! Wanted to mix it up before I do another infantry group / fish. Hopefully I will have something to show soon(ish)!

- On that note: I am yet to decide whether I should apply the camo scheme to the suits, or utilise a simpler matt grey. What do you guys think would work best?

Cheers!

PS - you can also find the list I am working on here (viewtopic.php?f=48&t=25277&p=318185#p318185) for those of you interested in the overall aesthetic that I am looking to build. Plus - advice from a gaming perspective is always appreciated to :)

Really? Crazy talk :D Thanks man!

Hmmm, applying the mottle cammo to suits is double edged. Its looks crazy cool, but really merges the lines on a suit. One of the issues with my Stealth XV8 and Shas'El's suit was they were hard to photograph as the organic cammo really breaks up the lines.

I saw a French painter apply it to just the curved shells then keep other armor sections urban tones. I'll check my inspiration folders for the image I'm thinking of.

Sure - it's really easy: sand painted in a mixed up dark brown colour, then light drybrished with steel legion drab. The mud is a mix of th same brown colour with a ton of gloss varnish, which you just pool on very thick as you see fit. Final step is the regular grass tufts from GW, and a final coat of gloss on the mud areas!

Hope that helps. With the realistic theme in mind I was going for a "war is hell" kind of vibe...

UPDATE!

So its been a while, between real life & everything else I have made less progress than I would like, but nevertheless progress has been made!

Since I last posted I have spent some time trying to nail the way I will be painting the suits, having done firewarriors & a vehicle the suits were the last area that I needed to figure out how to apply the scheme to.

Here is the first Stealth team! Took a lot of trial and error to get it quite right, but I am really happy with the result. I wasn't sure whether to utilise the camo pattern on them, and settled on restricting it to the "shell" and the weapons, as they are the largest, flattest areas. On the larger suits I will likely apply it more liberally.

Stealth Suits:

Image

(It felt like a bit of a risk but I am really happy with how the glow effect turned out on the fusion blaster, I think it sets off the other colours nicely and will definitely use it elsewhere when appropriate)

Painted So Far Group Shot:

Image

(I am happy with the cohesiveness of the scheme so far, I was really worried as to how well it would translate from infantry, to vehicle, to suit, but it is working well so far)

In addition! I have been hard at work building new models! (which takes me an ungodly long time as I am super anal about mould lines, etc etc). This is my first 1000 points minus a HQ, which I have yet to build....

Crisis Suits

Image

Image

Image

(I really like dynamic flying poses, but I do not really like flying stands... What I have done here is use milliput to build up a base and then use one foot to make it look like the suit is thrusting around dynamically. They were really fun to make. Also - this new Crisis suit kit is a million times better than the old one!)

Thanks for any comments, suggestions etc. It really is an enormous motivator and I sincerely appreciate anyone who takes the time to join me on this little journey!

Thanks!

The paint is very very smooth, I'm surprised you get that our of your rattle can of Mechanicus Grey.

I use the Mephiston Red rattle can for my Blood Angels and it seems to gunk up the details a bit, maybe I need to hold it further away from the model, although the coverage is not so great when I do that. Multiple sprays?

Anyway, looks great. I love these. Did you use a stencil for the "camo" effect or free hand?

Thank you!!

This cadre makes me happy. But also, embarressed I never expanded the city fight force beyond a few troops :D

I -REALLY- need to complete my stealth XV8 that originally was planned for the City Fight cadre.

Top work man :)

They are very nice man the tufts on the bases really set them off. That devilfish is sublime I even like the wet mud... But that visor in that purple is something special! I look forward to following your progress. I've no idea how you are getting that "shell" pattern so smooth. It really suits the stealth teams.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses!

I have a small update, no new models but some additions to exitsting models...

I took a bit of a chance on this.. I decided that with the realistic theme that I wanted to dirty my my guys up a little. This was inspired by some work I have done on my WIP Ghostkeel, where I have done some weathering effects that I found to be really effective. I am keen on using this technique but wanted it to be consistent across the force. With that in mind I figured I would need to retroactively apply the weathering to my other models.

I am pretty happy with how it has turned out, I'm very curious to see how others see it..?

Image

Image

(Really like how it turned out on this guys, I feel it just makes them a little more interesting to look at)

Image

Image

(Wanted to go subtle on the troops, a few dinks here and there for consistency sake)

Image

Image

(Went to town a little more on the 'fish! In retrospect maybe a tad too much. That said I wanted to capture the breachers being in the thick of it and taking some heat! I like the effect overall, as it adds some depth to the model)

I was very nervous doing this as I have never used any weathering effects of this nature. But I figured I should be brave as the original mission was to capture a realistic look. I think as an army it will look really cool, and eye catching on the table top!

As a sneak peak, I think you guys will really like the way it looks on the Ghostkeel!!

As an addendum :-

The reason I was very nervous about doing this is that I am an extremely detail orientated painter, and my style has always been very smooth & clean - meaning I typically shy away from stuff like this. In particular (as some have noted!) I am very anal about a smooth finish on my paint... With that in mind I really hope the effect doesn't detract from the style elsewhere, and rather compliments it.

As you can probably is a little outside my comfort zone, but I really wanted to do what I could to capture the gritty look I am going for (mud, etc etc.) - even if it means going outside my comfort zone as a painter!I hope I have managed to apply this look/effect without compromising on the quality... I guess this is one of those painting "have faith" moments!

Anyways - for these reasons it really is an area where advice is very useful!
