I agree with Kakapo a few posts back, your initial base idea is good - though I then agree that a dash of dusty brown will tie in the grass better and give a subtle shade shift from the colour scheme of the models.

Thanks! You're my biggest inspiration, so this means a lot coming from you! along with the broadside, I also picked up some agrax wash because I too agree that it could use a light dusting.

Well, managed to accidentally spill the agrax while opening it. :::(

Luckily, I had the foresight to buy a ton of small eye droppers, and I used a small plastic divider from my case as a squeegee to help suck it back up. Ended up recovering about 3/4 of it.

Protip: don't hastily open pots because you're excited to paint. :D

Hey hey...! (Applause) Welcome to the club Ka'buki :D My worst was black ink across my mother's favourite coffee table when I was a teenager.

Look forward to the new paint work. And cheers man! Glad to get folks creative ideas going!

I like the Broadside pose, look's like he is grouchily stalking forwards. ("Dang xenos messing up'ma lawn" - missile storm!)

My worst spill if you can call it that was with an old red ink. I'd just finished redecorating my bedroom when I lived with my parents, pristine white walls. I just opened the red ink for the first time ever to use on some BA's and when finished I with one finger attempted to close the lid. I pressed so hard the whole paint pot flew across the room hitting the wall at head height.... Every drop was now on my wall. It left me with a giant pink smudge until the day I moved out.

Also I do love the colour combo's you've chosen for your army it's quite striking in an understated way.

Ouch! I bet she was none too pleased!

That's just was I was going for with the pose! It reminds me of the Rex from metal gear solid. Making it more like a hulking animal makes them feel more menacing to me. I might incorporate more of the green color that's in my pathfinders to the broadsides, just for a bit of change, yet also keeping with theme coherency.

Oh man, I bet it looked pretty gruesome before you cleaned it up!

Thanks! I'm glad to see my ideas are coming across as intended. I appreciate the feedback a bunch guys!

I heavily modded up my devilfish to look more like an attack frigate rather than just a transport, which should lend itself well to doubling as a hammerhead. The only drawback is I don't have more of the same gundam parts to duplicate it once I buy another model. I'll post pics of it once I get it primed, as it looks a little over done as-is.

I spilled my Agrax twice! And I only use it for tiny details (FW hooves).

As per usual, touchups etc. Finally got the confidence to paint my Ethereal!

I'm surprised how well it goes with the theme. It took me an hour just to decide on colors before I even touched the paint.

I nailed the gem in his face on the first go, and I let out an audible "Hell yeah!", then people looked at me funny. :crafty:

When something goes as planned on the first try, it really boosts the confidence!

The purple dry brush on the ethereal looks like a nebula pattern from the front... Very mystical. I also feel your pain, it takes me longer to workout what colours (and placements of them) I'm going to use then it does to actually finish the unit!

Oh wow!
Just stumbled into yout log and gosh I am amazed with the color choises! They are amazing!
The scheme I decided to use comes really close to what you have achieved, and boy does the bluish grey look awesome on Tau infantry!

I am really curios what color you used for achieving the dark grey and tan. And what about the lighter bluish grey?

Your have done an excellent job with repainting you models from that purple/green to an amazingly beautiful Cadre!

Well done.
Would love to see more!

Hey thanks! It's been a lot of trial and error. Here is the list of colors I used:

Tan: Karak Stone
Grey: Skavenblight Dinge
Blue: Fenrisian Grey

Here are some updates:

And my kroot:

This is the color scheme I'm going to paint them.

My theme for the Kroot is similar to the Orks. They are dumb, but not ork dumb. Dumb like horses. They emulate my Tau army the most simple way possible. Tau helmets as armor, broken sensor arrays as goggles. One just roped a Markerlight to his rifle, because he sees them on my Pathfinders guns. "That's how it works right?" Another tried to adapt a non functional underslung sight to the top of his rifle. The crazy one in the back (The kroot hype-man, the only one I modeled with the arms up pose) thought it would be a great idea to strap every grenade he could find to himself.

Their tribal markings will be the same Fenrisian Grey as the Tau's, showing that they understand the organized nature of my Tau, and the urban assault tactics they employ, they just don't get why their guns don't light up, and that you can't just tie electronics to wood and have it work.

I am really liking how your army is looking! The main Tau forces look amazing! Myself I am painting my models in similar colors only that there are two main colors (eshin grey and zandri dust/maybe baneblade brown over it but not sure how it would look).
Your Kroot conversions looks great! I like the idea how you outfitted with the scraps of the other Tau units. Also I used the underslung "granade launcer" as a sight too for my FW team leaders as a makeshift markerlight "prototype" (or an older issue model). I will publish my work about the latest changes to my log soon-ish take a look if you are intrested :D
Cheers!

There's actually not a single highlight on them. I figured the angles of the panels made their own highlights.

I wanted to keep them matte because I felt that made the most sense with a tactical urban scheme. As far as tips, I thought neutrals made the most sense for the colors, and the blue was a nice contrast also keeping with the scheme.

I didn't use any washes, and I thinned my paints enough so I had to do two layers. Make sure the layers are completely dry before doing the next layer, and if you choose to seal it, use either a matter or satin finish. I didn't do either, though. :P

Did you use washes for between armour or not at all?

No washes. I just tried to be very careful lol. These were the first models I've ever painted so I didn't really know how to wash or anything.
