[Project] TwilightFox's Tau Army

Well, the time has finally come for my first project log, which also happens to be my first thread on ATT. But first, a little background that sets the stage for the project:

-------------------

I first started playing 40k during 7th Edition after splitting a Dark Vengence box set with a friend and cutting my teeth on a Dark Angels army. I painted some absolutely atrocious Tactical Marines and Deathwing Terminators in my early days using the cheapest craft paints I could get my hands on, but even then, I was getting a crash course in the basic techniques required for the hobby. Inevitably though, I reached the point that I wanted to buckle down and get serious. Taklon brushes were pushed aside in favor of sable. I gave up my collection of craft paints and started buying Army Painter and Citadel. I had even started tinkering with some simple kitbashing from bits I got through trades with other players at the local shop. I was working on improving the quality of my work, and the quality of my list.

Life intervened however, as it so often does, and instead I ended up taking a pretty long break from the game and the hobby.

Fastforward a few months, and now we have a new Edition with new rules and all new Codices on the way, I’ve finally found time to renew my interest in the hobby and the game, and I thought there would be no better time to start fresh with a brand new army than right now. The only thing precluding me from this is the daunting task of putting together an army from scratch, but I am determined to better myself through the effort.

---------------------

My overall, long-term goals for this project are to:

• Develop my skills as a modeler.
• Develop my skills as a painter.
• Field a well-made, competitive, and tournament legal list.

This Log will track my progress toward achieving these goals as I Acquire, Assemble, Paint, and Organize an army of Tau. I have no doubt that this process will take many months, as I am determined to do the best I can and improve the quality of my work constantly throughout the process.

I invite suggestions, critique, and constructive criticism as I move forward, as I know that the members of this community are highly experienced in the game and the hobby, and I look forward to learning from as many as I can.

Before I can start making meaningful progress toward my overall goals, I had to set up my workspace.

In the past, I would simply work wherever I could without having a dedicated space to call my own. This time however, my wife has been very accommodating and I am now able to commandeer an unused corner of the living room for my workspace!

Image

It’s a modest setup for now, but I’m particularly proud of my Ottlight and my magnifying lenses that clip on my prescription glasses. I also threw together a simple DIY wet pallet that should make life easier if it works as well as I hope it does. My paint collection may seem small, but I’ve got more on order through the Local Shop that should be here Friday.

As you can see in the picture, I’ve got a Start Collecting box. A friend gave it to me last year when I told him I was interested in playing Tau. With any luck I’ll have the Firewarriors ready by the time my paint gets here. Then I should be set for a weekend of painting.

I look forward to seeing your army come together! Starting out is one of the funnest parts personally.

Im in the "corner of the livingroom" club myself. I have to tiptoe past the baby's toys after my little saal goes to bed to paint.

One thing i have found invaluable is a large white ceramic tile to use as a painting surface. They are great to use as a pallet to mix paint, lay it out for watering down and is easy to clean!

Lastly what paint scheme you planning? Going to use a specific sept or going to make up your own colors?

You have a lovely work space set up and I would also love to see your first posts of the new Tau units you are assembling/painting. Which unit are you going to start with? Strike Team or Breachers?
Thank you for sharing this log! This is a huge motivational help for me :D
Cheers!

I never considered tile. Can you find large tiles like that at a hardware store? For now I'll stick with my self-healing cutting mat and wet pallet. But I'll definitely keep that in mind for any future upgrades to my workspace.

As for sept, I am slowly creating my own. I'll add lore and fluff as I go, but for now I know a few things for certain: the Vash'rra Sept comes from a Sept World locked in eternal twilight, which leads them to employ a primary camoflage color of purple. I plan on giving them a sept color of orange for vivid contrast.

I've already started building them as Strikers. In fact, I've finished assembling 10/13 models (1 DS8 Turret, 2 Drones, 6 Shas'la, and one Shas'ui).

I'm honored to hear that me sharing my efforts to improve my hobby is helping you improve yours! I hope you share some of your results with us as well!

In fact, here is a small taste of my efforts so far:

My Shas'ui and two Shas'la, escorted by a Gun Drone and a Markerlight Drone.

Don't worry, there'll be plenty more to come soon enough. :)

Yeah i picked up a few tiles 12" by 12" for under a dollar a piece at the hardware store. When they get dirty i spray them with windex, let it sit for an hour in the sink, then effortlessly scrape it off. An excellent hobby surface on the cheap!

Purple can look so great on tau! Just make sure you practice drybrushing and highlighting. It can be a color that can look very flat easy without care... I know from experiance because I failed to make it work.

Anyway good work so far, keep it up!

If you think a ceramic tile is good, just wait until you tried a proper wet palette! :D

Anytime! I've actually have logged the revival/new birth of my Cadre so feel free to check my progress so far. The log might be really unorthodox. I'm still a newbie here so I'm not reallyt sure how linking my log would work... but you can find it with my name on it under the same Projecct Log page.
Cheers!

Well, my order at the local shop has hit an unexpected shipping snag. It was expected to be there by Friday. I'm now told it should be here tommorrow, but I'm thinking it will most likely be Wednesday. :-?

On a more positive note however, I had a friend introduce me to a new shop in a nearby town! It's a much larger shop then my Local one, and their selection of tools, paints, and models is much wider. They even offer a annual wargaming club membership that comes with an instore discount (which I fully intend to take full advantage of)! As I was glancing through their 40k stocks I found a fair selection of Tau models, including the ever-harder-to-find Start Collecting Box! So I now have 2 boxes at my disposal, which adds up to 20 Firewarriors, 6 Crisis Suits, 16 Drones, and 2 Etherals to keep me busy.

If only my paint would hurry up and get here... :-?

So my Paint finally arrived! I did some tinkering for a Color Scheme test tonight! Have a look!

I still consider myself a Novice Painter, so please feel free to share any tips or advice to help me improve!

All paints used were Army Painter brand. Models were primed with Alien Purple Primer, then basecoated with Lava Orange (Sept), Necromancer Cloak (Cloth and Medallion), Gun Metal Metallic (Rifle), and Matte White (Medallion). A wash of Strongtone Quickshade was given across the whole model, then an extreme edge highlight in matte white was given to sharp edges of the model (regardless of color) before the lighted areas were covered with a single coat of the original base color.

What do you guys think of the color scheme? Is it a keeper? Do you think it would make for an attractive, unified army?

What about my highlights? Good? Bad? Too subtle? I'm not very comfortable using layered highlights: how can I improve?

I'd appreciate any feedback you guys want to give.

Ah I'm glad you got your paints! It looks like you've got a nice little project starting here :D Everything looks good so far, and I'd say the colour scheme is a keeper, but it is difficult to comment on the highlights at the distance they are in the photos. If you can get in a bit closer!

Looking forward to more!

Purple is a hard color to do, ao often it looks too flat. I think you avoided that fate quite well, I like it! It does look like some quality ultraviolet camouflage. I would consider what basing you use, perhaps chopped up plastic fishtank plants painted with simular colors?

I would suggest two things though, first try the scheme on a battlesuit. Some schemes look great on smaller models but fall appart on models with larger broader surfaces (like a tank). Two i think the hooves need a darker color as a way to break up the modela color from the base. Rifht now lacking that contrast the model just kinda bleeda into the base.

How's this? Any closer and my camera can't focus. Unfortunately all I have to take pictures with is my smartphone. :(

Unfortunately, I don't have any battlesuits put together. Since I'm planning on magnetizing my Crisis suits, I was holding off till I could get a drill and some magnets ready.

I did take your advice on the hooves, however. I think they look a lot cleaner, and like you said, they don't "bleed into the base" quite as bad.

Another thing I did was repaint their medallions. I think they look a lot cleaner.

Much cleaner! Does a good job at ballancing out the figure.

I see the turret in the background. Those got large flat surfaces, when finished lets see how the scheme looks on that.

Here is my DS8 SMS Turret all Painted up in my colors from two angles, and another one of my two finished FW posing alongside the turret. I think it looks good, myself! And they're starting to look like a solid unit!
