namegiver's Shi'ar Sept Project Log

I think I've decided on a color scheme and paint process, which means it is time to start a build thread! Here's my completed test model:

Image

It's been several years since I've done any figure painting, so it's a bit rough but overall (highlighting is hard! no more caffeine for me...) I think it's a good start. I'm sure I'll show better technique as I get more practiced. I'm satisfied with the colors, though initially wanted a lighter turquoise.

Basing is a simple desert scheme, with the bigger models getting Tyranid corpses and maybe static grass tuft tumbleweeds as flair.

I've started on my Coldstar Commander and hope to have her finished in time for a game this Sunday. I'll post some pics as progress allows.

Wonderful work- the yellow is excellent, and yellow is of course always a difficult color to paint. Overall the scheme sort of reminds me of a tropical fish!

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

I Like it. Cracking job my friend. I look forward to seeing your Battlesuits in this scheme.

Makes me want to start a thread for my own painting progression.

That's 2 thumbs up from me! Good job, all I can see now though is tropical fish; which fits the T'au naming scheme :)

Thanks for the kind words. My sept's homeworld is a water world, and I hoped the color scheme would convey something of that... it looks like I was successful  The accent color is actually an orange/brown but what with vagaries of digital cameras, light temperature and color profiles I can see how it'd come across as yellow.

The tropical fish comments gave me a smile. One of my other hobbies is keeping marine reef aquaria. Seems I can't get away from colorful little fish ;)

I didn't make the progress I hoped to this week -- too much hobby time spent watching batreps on Youtube. The Coldstar is coming along, and should be finished this weekend... it's a long weekend here in the US, so I get an extra day to deliver ;)

Until then, here's a pic of my entire army minus the Coldstar and Stormsurge I got for Christmas. Some is second hand and needs some TLC but overall it's ready for the brush:

Ok, I guess I'm going to count the Coldstar as "finished, for now." My goal was tabletop quality and I think I've made that. Not bad considering how long it's been since I last painted a model. There's more work to be done, but in the spirit of the-perfect-is-the-enemy-of-the-good I'm moving on. I'll come back later and touch things up. Really. Don't look at me like that...

Looking good. I like to see the old Paulson head sculpt too! By the way, what's the base with?

Thanks. The head is a Red Dog resin bit, is that the Paulson sculpt? The base is a bit of a Frankenstein. I've been experimenting with sand, ballast, GW Agrellan Earth and cork trying to find a scheme I like. The bottom part is sand and ballast mixed with PVA. The ridge is cork topped with sand/ballast/PVA then topped again with Agrellan Earth. The whole thing is then painted with a few Vallejo sand colors.

Yeah, those heads were on Paulson's old site years ago, and updated for the new suits on the new Red Dog site.

Interesting! It definitely looks good with your paint scheme. I remember you mentioned adding tumbleweeds or something a while ago, still doing that?

Oh yeah! I need to let it sit overnight so the glosscoat can cure. When that's done, I'll matte coat it then give it some tufts and maybe a GW skull or two (that box of skulls is irresistable :dead: )

Really nice, compliments the drone perfectly. Can't wait to see more.

When I saw it, I thought it was one of the old metal commander heads from a while back. It's a cool look, anyway! :) I'm pretty partial to bits of silvery metal in otherwise colourful paint schemes as well. Also, having your Tau associated with tropical fish is definitely a good thing for enlightened fish-men from space.

Did you do the drone base the same way as the Coldstar? It looks like an interesting (the good kind!) texture on the flatter parts.

Similar. The drone is sand and ballast, with more ballast. The extra ballast gives the interesting texture. Paint colors are different on the drone, too.

It all looks good so far. This and Onmyou's Motivation Service should be able to get me motivated to do more  .
Looks great though. Loving the scheme.

There she is, now with tufts. She actually won the last game I played for me. It was right down to the wire, score was tied at the bottom of turn 7. My opponent (World Eaters) was almost tabled, had a single Aspiring Champion left hiding out in the far corner of the table. She jetted in, put 3 wounds on the AC with the HOBC and Missile Pod then charged in and punched him in the face for the final wound. Epic. Maybe I should put a Chaos-y skull on the base as a trophy for her?

Love the Coldstar's mobility.
