First Fight: 500pts Vs Necrons

Hi fellow members of the fire caste. I've just started WH and am getting ready for my first battle. it's against my friend who has just started but is collecting silly robot men.

I would like to ask for advice with my army list for this specific match up, i know he's going to go for immortals rather than warriors and that he's probably going to use a Triarch Stalker.

I would change the structure of your list a bit.
These changes give you the following advantages.

You have more separate troop units with a FSE CAD, that all have obsec.

The FW unit is larger at 10 men + turret. Thus you have more protection around the Ethereal, who gives up a VP if he dies.

Drop a lot of drones and pick up some TL weapons to compensate for lack of ML in this list. Drones are best used when you have a Drone Net VX1 formation or when you can pair some with a Marko Commander. Throwing in 1 or 2 in units usually don't work too well, since you also must dedicate that units shooting to the target.

Wow thanks!

My idea with the drones was to use them as ablative wounds but i can see that more firepower is more.

A few questions if you don't mind me asking.

Is there a reason the missile suits are in a unit together?

Also when do you think it's best to overcharge the cyclic ion?

Almost never. ^^
The only time I ever thought overcharging them was a good idea (or any AP4 Ion weapon for that matter) was against Tyranid Warriors due their 3 wounds at T4 and 4+ armor.

Missile suits were together since you can only have 6 troops in a CAD.

You can pair the CIB suits or Plasma suits instead if you like.

You can also drop one of the non-TL weapons on w/e suits you decide on pairing and add in Target Lock if you really want the paired suits to shoot at different targets.

Woops i won!

My Crisis suits took a beating getting sniped by the Triarch Stalker until a plasma rifle took down it's shields from behind.

We're gonna do a 750pt tomorrow with roughly the same models. Any advice on that? I was thinking of proxying one of my suits as a Riptide (he said it's ok) but i also really felt the low BS of my guys and gals hurting me without marker lights.

My new neighbour (and old friend) plays necrons, and from what I've learned from playing against and alongside him, they are tough, their vehicles are fantastic until they take that first penetrating hit, and they know NO fear.l, what with the basic Warriors being Ld10 and all. Another thing I've noticed is that their ranged weapons are either really long range, or 24", almost to a T. If you can LoS a Doomsday Ark and make it move, it loses a lot of potential. Watch out for Destroyers, they're as sneaky as our battlesuits. Slaughter those Warriors, but not before more important targets like Wraiths.

You NEED Markerlight support. You can't play Tau well without it, it's just our thing. I find a Commander with a group of drones works a charm. Take some pathfinders if you aren't rhat desperate, but don't expect them to be as useful as BS5 Jet Pack equippedDrones. A Mark'O is expensive, but damn he helps a lot. It took my twenty Fire Warriors to kill five enemy Space Marine Scouts last night, because Tau can't shoot to save their lives.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your preferred Mark'O load out?
