Bel'kro's 1000 Point TAC (Fluffy)

Hey everyone! Seeing as I currently have zero models, I thought it prudent to develop an army list before purchasing, and I was hoping you lovely folks would help me out!

Fluff wise, I would like this army to fulfill two criteria:

1) A standard Tau force is all about the Firewarriors (mechanised more often than not), who can call in a unit of XV8s when their pulserifles no longer cut it, and maybe a tank. I would like to reflect this in my army.

2) I would like my army to be close quarters specialists. City fighters/stationed on an orbital. ;) You get the idea. You'll notice that in its current iteration, my list has no weapons with a range exceeding 18 inches. With the exception of maybe a hammerhead or some pathfinders, I would like to keep it that way (though I could of course be persuaded otherwise).

The current list is as follows.

Patrol Detachment (998)

HQ
Commander (176) :
4x Fusion Blasters.
2x MV1 Gun Drones, 4x Pulse Carbines.

Elite
XV8 Crisis Battlesuit Team (408) :
2x Crisis Battlesuits, 6x Fusion Blasters.
1x Crisis Battlesuit, 3x Flamers.
1x Crisis Battlesuit, 2x Flamers, 1x Drone Controller.
8x MV1 Gun Drones, 16x Pulse Carbines.

Troop
Breacher Team (80) :
10x Firewarriors, 10x Pulse Blasters.

Breacher Team (80) :
10x Firewarriors, 10x Pulse Blasters.

Dedicated Transport
TY7 Devilfish (127) :
1x Burst Cannon, 2x Gun Drones.

TY7 Devilfish (127) :
1x Burst Cannon, 2x Gun Drones.

In terms of play style, my current strategy is to make a beeline for the most dangerous shooting units with the breacher teams in devilfish. The commander and the XV8s will manta strike to either support the fish, or to remove any dangerous melee units. During the assault phase, with any luck, my devilfish will charge and tie up my enemy's shooting for a turn, allowing the crisis suits a reprieve.

Turn 2 and beyond I will unload the breachers and between them and the suits, I will systematically remove units from the board while using devilfish and drones to screen charges.

So, what words of wisdom do you have for me?

Looks like a fun list idea! While getting some pulse rifle support might be nice, at 1000 points we can definitely fit in everything you want. Looking at your list though, there's one important change I'd make- I think the large XV8 squad is being pulled in two directions, if you will. It wants to hunt tanks with Fusion Blasters, and infantry with Flamers. What if we split the unit into a full Flamer XV8 team, and another Fusion Blaster Commander? Take a look at this list:

-

HQ - Commander w/ 4x Fusion Blasters; 2x Shield Drones (176)
HQ - Commander w/ 4x Fusion Blasters; 2x Shield Drones (176)
Troops - 9x Breachers (72)
Troops - 9x Breachers (72)
Dedicated Transport - Devilfish w/ Burst Cannon; 2x Gun Drones (127)
Dedicated Transport - Devilfish w/ Burst Cannon; 2x Gun Drones (127)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 8x Flamers, 1x Drone Controller; 6x Gun Drones (251)

Total: 1001 - Command Points: 3 (1 Patrol Detachment)

-

I had to cut two Breachers to make it fit, but this list packs a ton more firepower. Also, remember not to put the Drone Controller on the XV8 Shas'vre. What do you think?

Thanks Arka! I had a feeling a second fusion commander would be suggested. :P I've been thinking about it for a while, but to me it just doesn't feel right to field more than one commander below 1500 points.

My original thinking with the crisis suits is that they're going to be pretty close to the breachers as their support. Therefore it would only be a single turn before I get to use those flamers, and just as importantly, it acts as an overwatch deterrent. However, I appreciate they would not be as effective against a single target as an identically kitted out team.

With that said, I do understand the need for more reliable firepower if I am to only take one commander. Here is the adjusted list.

Patrol Detachment (999)

HQ (176)
Commander (176) :
4x Fusion Blasters.
2x MV4 Shield Drones.

Elite (323)
XV8 Crisis Battlesuit Team (323) :
2x Crisis Battlesuits, 8x Cyclic Ion Blasters.
1x Crisis Battlesuit, 2x Cyclice Ion Blasters, 1x Drone Controller.
6x MV1 Gun Drones, 12x Pulse Carbines.

Fast Attack (80)
Pathfinder Team (40) :
5x Pathfinders, 5x Pulse Carbines, 5x Markerlights.

Pathfinder Team (40) :
5x Pathfinders, 5x Pulse Carbines, 5x Markerlights.

Troop (166)
Breacher Team (83) :
1x Firewarrior Shas’Ui, 1x Pulse Blaster, 1x Markerlight.
9x Firewarrior Shas’La, 9x Pulse Blasters.

Breacher Team (83) :
1x Firewarrior Shas’Ui, 1x Pulse Blaster, 1x Markerlight.
9x Firewarrior Shas’La, 9x Pulse Blasters.

Dedicated Transport (254)
TY7 Devilfish (127) :
1x Burst Cannon, 2x Gun Drones.

TY7 Devilfish (127) :
1x Burst Cannon, 2x Gun Drones.

For future reference I should let you know I will never field a list over the point limit. I'm happy for my opponents to, it just doesn't feel right for me. Thanks for reading!

I see what you mean about fielding one commander- especially in a fluffy list. With the XV8s, using them as support is a great idea- but you might find that your ideal targets just aren't all in range of your various short-range weapons. But Cyclic Ion Blasters are fantastic, and I'm sure you'll do well using them! There's one little twist you could add to the army- use Darkstrider too. By reducing the number of Pathfinders you can easily add him. Here's a slightly-modified list:

HQ - Commander w/ 4x Fusion Blasters; 2x Shield Drones (176)
HQ - Darkstrider w/ Markerlight (45)
Troops - 10x Breachers (80)
Troops - 10x Breachers (80)
Dedicated Transport - Devilfish w/ Burst Cannon; 2x Gun Drones (127)
Dedicated Transport - Devilfish w/ Burst Cannon; 2x Gun Drones (127)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 8x Cyclic Ion Blasters, 1x Drone Controller; 6x Gun Drones (323)
Fast Attack - 5x Pathfinders w/ 5x Markerlights (40)

Total: 998 - Command Points: 3 (2 Patrol Detachments)

-

Put Darkstrider in with one of those Breacher teams, and their damage will be considerably higher against T4 units! He also adds a BS2+ Markerlight or a BS2+ Pulse Carbine, and allows your units to fall back if they're charged or consolidated in to.

What do you think?

I think Darkstrider is an excellent idea, and I shall definitely consider using him. Thanks very much!
