Need help bringing list from 100% to 75% to make it fun.

I am in a tournament which isn't serious but is meant to get more players into the game. I, being a new player, am now 6 games out of 12 in and I am seeing the lists that I build are too powerful for this. I feel like they are at 100% instead of 75% and it feels like my opponents are not having fun.

For instance, this last game was 1000pts and I completely wiped out a squad and a half of his Space Marines in turn 1 with him doing maybe 1 shield drone kill. This made me feel like crap because he conceded at the end of turn 2. I need help making stuff that is more fun for opponents because this isn't a super serious tournament to me.

The List:
Outrider Detatchment
Cadre Fireblade
Cadre Fireblade
5 x Gun Drones
5 x Gun Drones
5 x Gun Drones
5 x Gun Drones
Devilfish w 2 x Gun Drones
Devilfish w 2 x Gun Drones

Supreme Command
Commander Fusion x 4 w 2 x Shield Drones
Commander Fusion x 4 w 2 x Shield Drones
Coldstar w Drone Controller / ATS

The plan was sticking a Fireblade and 10 drones in a Devilfish and driving them home into the enemy. I would keep the Coldstar with the Drone Controller near all the drones turning them deadly.

24 Drones x 2 guns each x 3 shots a gun = 144 S5 shots at 4+ BS

Never before have I felt such power. I wiped an entire tactical squad in a building of 10 guys and tied down 2 of his other squads so they couldn't fire on me next turn. I then got back into the Devilfish the next turn and drove them towards his other squads ( which were in each corner so split up which was a terrible mistake on his part) and he conceded on turn 2. Made me feel like crap.

Also taking the first turn was crucial.

Do I keep running the list and let them adapt or should I tone it down. And how do I do that? Should I run Rifles instead of the drones? I really like the Devilfish getting people up close and then killing tons.
We are men of action, lies do not become us.

I know most posts in this forums are about optimizing lists. "Optimizing" for winning. But, you know, "deoptimizing" is not an effort. It is just "Doing what many other players do": Choose some units because they look great. Because you like their backstory. Because you have cool idea on how to pose, paint or even rebuild them.

So: Take three units that you do *like* no matter if they are considered powerful or not. Drop their point-value in drones.

Then: see if you can win with using those ("non optimized") units. As you already noticed: that will be more fun ;)

I'm of the mind that you should punish everyone in the tournament. Tournament is a tournament. Friendly play is another story but I still feel you should challenge newer players and get them to think in whatever form that ends up taking.

Honestly this is a struggle I have been having recently as well. T'au defense is just too high when you start factoring in Drones.

So first off, since this a new players tournament, I think your instinct to go easy is correct. If this was a real tournament I would say there is no reason to hold back.

Things you can do:
Joc-wi's suggestion regarding taking units you like as opposed to units based on their effectiveness is good. Another thing you may want to do is avoid drones, especially shield and gun drones. Shield drones because they are stupidly durable and can effectively negate a whole armies shooting with enough of them, and with no real loss in your armies effectiveness. The issue with them gets worse the more Shields you have in an area. Avoid Gun Drones because they just kick out a whole hell of a lot of dakka for really cheap, plus they can force your opponent to "change" targets from your anti-tank or specialist infantry and suits onto anti-infantry drones. This forced change in targets can be very frustrating for new players, and is something no other army is capable of, except the Imperial Characters list which is pretty universally hated.

You may want to put together a showcase list. Pick one of each unit type you have models for and put those on the board first, then fill in with highly effective units. Let people use the Morale rules against you by taking full 10 man Fire Warrior and Pathfinder squads. Instead of taking Commanders put Crisis Suits in their place, and take just one big unit of them with only a handful of drones. Instead of mounting Fusion Guns enmass on your suits set them up as swiss army knives by putting some other weapons on it. Use this as an opportunity to try some off the wall ideas and tactics, like using paired burst cannons and ATS on a trio of suits. Or go full Macross and fit your Crisis with Plasma and two Missile Pods.
