500/1000/1500pts Escalation Tournament on 11/11/17

Hey all! Prepping my lists for a small 3 round tournament next weekend and just wanted some feedback on what we all think might be pitfalls against these lists. It's 500/1000/1500pts in 3 rounds with restrictions seemingly only to be that you can only do 3 detachments. Other than that there seems to be no restrictions. I'm cheesing fairly hard and have no qualms doing this much or even more. Comments and critiques welcome!

These all look very solid. Two questions though- first, do you think the Coldstar has enough firepower to be useful in a 500-pt game? I'm not doubting you, I'm actually curious. And second, what is the 7-model Gun Drone squad doing in your 1500-pt list?

I just recently got my Coldstars and felt they did great their first game. Super quick. I ran 2 and they were able to wipe an infantry unit turn 1. It was AdMech’s vanguards, I think. Had a 4 up save. The first Coldstar reduces the squad to 3. Its very likely those 3 could have failed moral.
I feel 1 Coldstar should do good at such low points.

Coldstar is a stud on capturing objectives and mobility. For small points games I think he is invaluable. When I played a few other small games I was able to out play my opponents with other semi mobile units; vespid, devilfish, and regular commanders. I know I'll need his mobility so I've included him in all the lists and I will definitely let you know how it goes after this weekend.

The 7 model gun drone squad is outside the fish either protecting the CIB commanders, or following the DC in the stealth squad or if I have the opportunity, added protection for the fusion commanders. They are extra wounds essentially and unless I wanted to add support drones on the pathfinders (Yuck!) I have literally no other place to add drones and I ran out of force org slots for FA so 7 was what I had to do.

So after playing these lists on Saturday I have a few pointers.

500 point list was ok but had a few issues dealing with a 3++ on a venerable dreadnought. Coldstar was great at grabbing objectives but my opponent got super SUPER lucky with saves and saved 20+ 3++ saves roughly in a row leaving him with one wound after FNP'ing 2 wounds early. I would play the list again against pretty much anything.

1000 point list was gimmicky using the drone/fish/fireblade combo for the points. I would like to have seen this list against ANYTHING other than what I faced. My opponent was AM with 2 or 3 psykers a lord commisar, some other characters who buffed people, 90 conscripts, an ogryn, and 9 bullgryn with shields. Theproblem was definitely the bullgryn because he used a psychic power called psychic barrier which increases ALL saves by one and then used a CP every time I shot him in the shooting phase for ANOTHER +1 to ALL saves. TO said this worked with invulns which I find extremely hard to believe but couldn't see anything in the wording that wouldn't work with invulns. I unloaded 90 shots with the fireblade/fish/drone combo and killed a single model. Apparently I would need 648 shots to kill the squad. Kind of ridiculous when you think about it. Since they were rocking 2++ saves, I would have needed 175 CIB shots to roast them. Kind of insane for 1000 points.

If you ever go against something like that, just crash stuff like riptides or devilfish into them and go after everything else. Unfortunately for me the mission was relic and they were the things that picked it up so I HAD to kill them to win the mission. I conceded after turn 3 because I saw I didn't have the horses to take care of his BS. I annihilated everything else in his lists except the characters he was hiding and the guys holding the objective. Nerf AM.

1500 point list was great and was going to table my opponent (sisters) except the fact that the 3rd mission was a terrible twist on the second mission and my opponent started with the relic in his hand and put it near celestine. Since he started with it he slow played until we ran out of time and won the game. I wasn't going to cause a fuss because I was kinda upset from the previous two rounds and didn't want to be a further pain because by this point in the day the TO's had heard a lot of feedback about the so-so missions, and that was with people being nice.

Overall, solid lists. My commanders with CIB's were definitely champions for handling guys and vehicles. QFC's did their job, for the most part barring one overly resilient dreadnought, but I think I would have rather had a third CIB commander instead of the second QFC on my third match. It was a weird setup and weirder mission so it's hard to say in a normal setting what would be good. Coldstar did good in the first game and was a lot less useful as the points went up because the missions had zero objective grabbing. He still had a place for running around and blocking incoming fire and getting to flanks to cause distractions so he is definitely a tactically flexible and useful commander. Very little I would change on my lists though. I'd love to have gotten more time on the last game but sadly it wasn't to be.

Sounds like a good showing- I might be pessimistic, but I don't think really any Index army has a chance against an optimized AM army like that. Otherwise, great job!

How did the mechanized Drones work out?

Drones didn't do anything against the bullgryn and died in the ensuing combat to some degree. Some conscripts killed a few here and there. Forgot to mention that the second mission gave EVERYTHING +1 attack so of course Tau would lose that one. Another instance of "what were the TO's thinking?" 3rd game the fish got popped and they just rolled with the fireblade shooting stuff dead. Not overly surprised, they just drowned stuff in lead. they would have been mopping up the infantry quite well while the CIB commander's who were escorting the fish would have popped tanks for them. Having 2 pairs of gun drones from each CIB commander, plus the fish, plus the 2 from the fireblade made a great wall of "pick your targets" for my opponent to waste shots and attacks in CC. I think it ended up saving like 10 drones or something if he would have guessed correctly as to how many shots and attacks to divide properly. MSU ftw!
