New toys

Morning all,

So I’ve a game coming up at the end of December and I’ve recently bought the new battle force box. The game is imperial vs Xenos. Imperialis will be 1500 points of space Wolves focusing on combat and 1500 points of Astra Militarum consisting of 3 basalisks and mordian infantry. Helping further the greater good is 1000 points of ynnari mostly using open topped transports, 1000 points of necrons with mostly warriors and flayed ones. I have 1000 points to play with. At my disposal I have;

1 get started kit
1 optimised pathfinder team
1 cadre fireblade
1 battleforce

Battleforce needs building and painitng but I’ve got time. Here’s what I came up with

++ Unbound Army (Faction) (T'au Empire) [48 PL, 1008pts] ++

+ HQ +

Cadre Fireblade [2 PL, 42pts]: Markerlight

Commander [6 PL, 160pts]: 4x Fusion blaster

+ Troops +

Strike Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. Fire Warrior Shas'ui: Pulse rifle
. 4x Fire Warrior w/ Pulse Rifle

Strike Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. Fire Warrior Shas'ui: Pulse rifle
. 4x Fire Warrior w/ Pulse Rifle

+ Elites +

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits [14 PL, 323pts]: 6x MV1 Gun Drone
. Crisis Shas'ui: 3x Cyclic ion blaster
. Crisis Shas'ui: 3x Cyclic ion blaster
. Crisis Shas'vre: 2x Cyclic ion blaster, Drone controller

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits [14 PL, 323pts]: 6x MV1 Gun Drone
. Crisis Shas'ui: 3x Cyclic ion blaster
. Crisis Shas'ui: 3x Cyclic ion blaster
. Crisis Shas'vre: 2x Cyclic ion blaster, Drone controller

+ Fast Attack +

Pathfinder Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. 4x Pathfinder: 4x Markerlight
. Pathfinder Shas'ui: Markerlight

Pathfinder Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. 4x Pathfinder: 4x Markerlight
. Pathfinder Shas'ui: Markerlight

++ Total: [48 PL, 1008pts] ++

Created with BattleScribe

Any suggestions/ ideas/ tactics welcome. We’ll be playing both death matches and tactical objective games.

Cheers :fear:

Looks like a very solid start. Are you doing this unbound, or battle-forged? Your current army won't get any Command Points, so I'd definitely work some detachments in.

By the way, which Battleforce do you have?

Anyway, I'd definitely give your Commander some Gun Drones, and you can probably drop the Fireblade as there aren't too many units for him to buff. Let's also swap the Fire Warriors for some Stealthsuits. In addition, you can probably make more efficient units by giving your XV8s 2x CIBs and 1x ATS, instead of 3x ATS. Here's a sample list:

-

HQ - Commander w/ 4x Fusion Blasters; 2x Shield Drones (176)
Elites - 3x Stealthsuits w/ Fusion Blaster, 2x Burst Cannons, Homing Beacon (121)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 6x CIBs, 3x ATS; 6x Gun Drones (306)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 6x CIBs, 3x ATS; 6x Gun Drones (306)
Fast Attack - 5x Pathfinders w/ 2x Markerlights, 3x Ion Rifles (52)
Fast Attack - 5x Pathfinders w/ 5x Markerlights (40)

Total: 1001 - Command Points: 4 (1 Vanguard Detachment)

-

You could also swap one of the CIB squads for a flamer squad, improving your effectiveness against infantry, and use the saved points to buy some more fun stuff. You could also drop one XV8 unit and add a ton of Drones. Here's that list if you're interested:

-

HQ - Commander w/ 4x Fusion Blasters; 2x Shield Drones (176)
HQ - Cadre Fireblade w/ Markerlight (42)
Dedicated Transport - Devilfish w/ Burst Cannon; 2x Gun Drones (127)
Elites - 3x Stealthsuits w/ Fusion Blaster, 2x Burst Cannons, Homing Beacon (121)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 6x CIBs, 3x ATS; 6x Gun Drones (306)
Fast Attack - 5x Pathfinders w/ 2x Markerlights, 3x Rail Rifles (97)
Fast Attack - 5x Pathfinders w/ 5x Markerlights (40)
Fast Attack - 5x Gun Drones (40)
Fast Attack - 6x Gun Drones (48)

Total: 997 - Command Points: 4 (1 Outrider Detachment)

-

Just some ideas. Anyway, what do you think?

Awesome lists! It will be battleforged I always use unbound for battlescribe then muck around fitting them into formations after. The battleforce is the new one with a commander, 2 stealth units, xv8s and a ghostkeel. I toyed with the idea of a flamer squad but they'd be dropping onto around 90 mordians in tight formation. They'd do serious damage but I doubt they'd survive the retaliation. What do you think?

If you used a Homing Beacon and dropped within 8" of those Mordians, assuming you properly split fire you're looking at 15+ kills from the Flamers, then 6+ kills with the Gun Drones, then you'd charge and kill 2-3 more Guardsmen, but overwatch would kill 3-4 Gun Drones. Not bad. If they shot back at you next turn they'd kill 2-3 Gun Drones and 2-3 XV8s- the Mordians would win, that's for sure. Those kinds of massive hordes can only be countered by tons of Flamer XV8s, or better yet, letting your more melee-proficient allies mop them up. Use your Ion and Fusion weapons and kill their tanks and heavy units.

Or, you could go for an even battlesuit-heavier list if you're interested. Consider this:

-

HQ - Commander w/ 4x Fusion Blasters; 2x Shield Drones (176)
Elites - 3x Stealthsuits w/ Fusion Blaster & Multi-Tracker, 2x Burst Cannons (103)
Elites - 3x Stealthsuits w/ 3x Burst Cannons, Homing Beacon (110)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 6x CIBs, 3x ATS; 6x Gun Drones (306)
Elites - 3x XV8s w/ 9x Flamers; 6x Gun Drones (255)
Fast Attack - 6x Pathfinders w/ 6x Markerlights (48)

Total: 998 - Command Points: 4 (1 Vanguard Detachment)

Flamers are definitely the way to go, had a little strategy chat with my allies, as my flamers drop in, his flayed ones pop up. Between us we’ll clear a big enough hole to drop the anti armour in turn to. Had a mess around and came up with this (vanguard detachment)

++ Unbound Army (Faction) (T'au Empire) [53 PL, 1003pts] ++

+ HQ +

Commander [7 PL, 176pts]: 4x Fusion blaster, 2x MV4 Shield Drone

+ Troops +

Strike Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. Fire Warrior Shas'ui: Pulse rifle
. 4x Fire Warrior w/ Pulse Rifle

Strike Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. Fire Warrior Shas'ui: Pulse rifle
. 4x Fire Warrior w/ Pulse Rifle

+ Elites +

XV25 Stealth Battlesuits [6 PL, 121pts]: Homing beacon
. 2x Stealth Shas'ui w/o support system: 2x Burst cannon
. Stealth Shas'vre: Fusion blaster

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits [14 PL, 295pts]: 5x MV1 Gun Drone
. Crisis Shas'ui: Advanced targeting system, 2x Cyclic ion blaster
. Crisis Shas'ui: Advanced targeting system, 2x Cyclic ion blaster
. Crisis Shas'vre: 2x Cyclic ion blaster, Drone controller

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits [14 PL, 251pts]: 6x MV1 Gun Drone
. Crisis Shas'ui: 3x Flamer
. Crisis Shas'ui: 3x Flamer
. Crisis Shas'vre: Drone controller, 2x Flamer

+ Fast Attack +

Pathfinder Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. 4x Pathfinder: 4x Markerlight
. Pathfinder Shas'ui: Markerlight

Pathfinder Team [3 PL, 40pts]
. 4x Pathfinder: 4x Markerlight
. Pathfinder Shas'ui: Markerlight

++ Total: [53 PL, 1003pts] ++

2 strike teams are there to walk up the center behind the necromancy warriors to try and draw the wolves out. Ynnari will be all fast attack to encircle them. Then 1 pathfinder team supports the strike teams and the other paints the basalisks. How does that sound?

Honestly it looks good. That strategy sounds effective too. The only thing I could bring up is just bookkeeping stuff- you might find it odd to have two CIBs at AP-2 and only one at AP-1, and likewise one XV8 squad has five Gun Drones and the other has six. I understand these are to keep points down, but I think it's just worth mentioning.

Anyway enjoy the game and let us know how it goes!

Thanks! Desperate for the win, me and the guard player have a friendly but intense rivalry
