Shas'la Jo'Chama'nn, this is Kakapo. My cadre is close and moving towards you to provide an escort. K-42 has a Manta on it's way to extract the objective, you should meet up with it as soon as possible. Transmitting our current co-ordinates to you now.

Confirmed Kakapo, a Manta is inbound to recover the artefact and move it to a safe location. Transmitting current location and vector to you now.

Meanwhile, in space, the second massive volley of missiles slammed home into the battlecrusier, consuming it in a maelstrom of fusion detonations. It's armour buckled and groaned in the face of the onslaught, but still held fast in most places, though more areas of the hull were breached. Even then, another massive wave of missiles from the Kir'qaths was hurtling towards it, and the two Lar'shi class starships had begun their approach, adding their own missile salvoes to the unrelenting bombardment. Even better, the Imperial ship was still running on only half-engine power and the enhanced effects of it's shields were almost depleted. Soon it would be vulnerable to the fearsome gunnery weapons on the Lar'shis.

EDIT: Looks like an Ethereal has got it now. Kakapo Cadre, move to keep the Aun and that cargo safe, the enemy must not get it.

Kor'O to extraction Manta, transfer of objective registered. Transmitting new landing co-ordinates now.

The InterrogaTier continued his march through blood and corpses. Perhaps he had already met with fellow Imperials, however he had taken no time in distinguishing friend from foe, intent only upon exterminating those defiant to his Holy might. After all, what were a few dead loyalists if it meant a more profound judgement upon the heretics?

By this stage there was little to be recognised about him, with a half burnt off face and Imperial Garments now dyed blue from the blood. Even so, his deathly scowl was unmistakable, made all the more frightening by his disfigurement.

Upon opening yet another door, he welcomed the sight of El'Mo and Dask in the distance. However, his emotions contorted to outrage when the Tau emerged. He had seen Dask teleport, though with a missing limb or two. As for El'Mo, The InterrogaTier could not quite tell whether he had escaped, or been simply vaporised.

Either way, the Xenos scum would face his judgement.

"This is Shas'la Jo'Chma'nn, Kakapo. Negative, the objective has been handed over to the Aun, on command of Shas'ar'tol", the 'La replied. "We will extract as soon as the Aun see fit. But as long as the flight route is not secured, we can't extract."
Jo'Chma'nn switched to a chanel, which was reported as being intercepted by the Gue'la: "The Aun commands to recover the data core inside the R&D, proceed with care."

Dask stood silent behind the Arch Magos. He was shamed and could not believe his ineptitude. They'd been forced to resort to the secondary plan and it was his fault. His error, perhaps, could yet be redeemed. According to the vox chatter, the xeno cowards had brought the data core to loading bay 4. The disabled manta, still blocking entry and exit with no way of being moved, would keep it from escaping the Orbital. Elmo and Dask's early assignments could prove to be useful. Did Taleghan predict this? How did he know they'd bring it to bay 4?

They had to act quickly. The xeno heretics proved quite creative when faced with logistical issues. They had little time before they figured out a way to move the scuttled manta without the gutted loading cranes.

They were running out of operatives as well. Elmo and Arrow were both in the infirmary with heavy injuries. Unlike Dask, who could have his augmented arm replaced, their vital organs had been damaged and they would need more time before they could move, if they survived at all. Those experimental rounds had caught them off guard. Unless Taleghan had known all along, which didn't seem as unlikely as Dask wanted to believe.

At once a single bright red contact lit up on the sensors of Sorrowhand's Shas'vre. It was coming from behind them, and fast. Thinking fast, he quickly halted his team and ordered them to take positons. The team blended seamlessly into their surroundings, setting up a withering cross-fire for their pursuer. As the crazed deformed fanatic barrelled into their trap, blood-stained garments flying about him, the team opened fire. Screen-breaker rounds slammed into his form, followed by plasma pulse bursts and a second flurry of hypersonic slugs, a fire pattern that was now second-nature to the team. As the assailent reeled from the onslaught, the team burst from hiding, the Shas'vre and another member emptying their flamer attachments into his form before speeding down the causeway to set up another ambush, under the cover of frag grenades.

Acknowledged Jo'Chma'nn, Kakapo Cadre, form up around the Ethereal. Keep an eye on him too, I remember the last time we had one running around in one of these situations, and it wasn't pretty..

Wait, hang on, I have an idea. It's risky, but it might just be crazy enough for it to work. Reverend Aun, pleas pass me the data-core.

Thank you.

You there! Fio! wrap the data-core up. Make sure it'll resist an explosion. Good job.

Extraction Manta, open your loading bay, make the bay doors are facing this trajectory.

Confirmed Kakapo.

Excellent. *loads the now-armoured data-core into airbursting fragmentation projector and fires, sending the data core sailing out of the bay, past the derelict Manta, into the void and straight into the extraction ship! It lands in the Manta's cargo bay with a gentle thud, and the door closes behind it.*

Damn I'm a mighty fine shot.

Kakapo, this is Kor'el B'aloh my squadron and several others are moving to cover the extraction Manta. Good job. Keep up the good work people.

Cas rolled over, careful to protect his injured side. By all accounts, the technology of the Arch Magos was successful in keeping them from the alien scanners. Sadly, they reacted quickly when he attacked. A brief flury of Tau fire later and he was left for dead.

He looked over his wounds. Already, his blood was clotting in the large wound he sustained. Thankful that the coagulation agent he took earlier worked, he retreated back to the last location of his retinue. Thankfully, they were where he left them.

"The datacore has been taken by the foul xenos. Apparently they have made it to hangar 4. At this point, we should continue with our objective. We still have unused stasis capsules that we should fill as fast as possible. We must proceed to the primary debarkation point immediately. We'll pick up what specimens we need along the way."

'La Jo'Chma'nn, this is K-42. Extraction transport is in positon, flight path is well-cleared.

Meanwhile, in the void, another wave of Mantas had reached the ailing Battlecruiser. One group struck on it's sides, and their payloads landed straight into the ship's launch bays. The hangers were ravaged by explosions, with hundreds of deck crew atomised and scores of Thunderhawks and other attack craft smashed asunder and obliterated. At the same time, the second group hit the other side of the ship, their ordinance hitting home on the port-side engines and silencing them. The damage could be repaired, but at this point, the battlecruiser was drifting on momentum alone..

The whole hangar bay was skocked, as a Gue'la battlecruiser rammed into the fleeing manta - the very one with the datacore. The manta broke into pieces, which were drawn into the cruiser by tractor beams. Only Aun Ryumyo seemed calm "I knew they would do something like this", he said, hands in his robes. "Do you know, what a double deceit is, La Jo'Chma'nn?" he grinned, as he presented a data core. "Now they will search the whole...", replied the 'La. "Exactly", smiled Ryumyo. "And now escort me to the command deck", he demanded. "All battlesuits stay in here, to await the enemy. All Shas on foot and civillians, come with me!"

The Dauntless-class light cruiser Vanaheimr tore into realspace, the miasma of the warp sublimating off of its battle-scorched hull. One by one, the ship's realspace sensors came alive, and the ship's crew chirped and babbled in tandem.

But Lord Inquisitor Lyeotius ignored the noise, ignored the paltry details of the bridge and, closing his eyes, reached out with this mind. Through the silent vacuum of space, through the alien corridors of the orbital in front of them, he probed for his prey. The air chilled around Lyeotius, and frost snaked across the bulkheads and monitors of the bridge. A communications officer crumpled to the deck, seized by some ethereal force. Another ignored the blood pouring from her nose. But still the Lord Inquisitor pushed on, turning his psychic gaze to the boarding craft buzzing between the battlecruiser and the xenos orbital.

"He is here," Lyeotius finally rasped, his voice choked with rage. "The magos is
here. Ready all hands."

Moments before revealing himself, The InterrogaTier saw Cas fall into the trap of the scum. Even then, it took considerable restraint to resist launching himself into the thick. As Cas wretched away from the fire, the ringing in The InterrogaTier's head, present since awakening, began to fade, and the messages through his Comms began to swim through.

Immediately realising the importance of their new goal, he retreated away from the Tau and circled around to meet with his wounded fellow. As he walked, he continued his unmelodious mutterings.

"Though it's been a long walk walk, their screams were quite a nice talk talk. A gutting there, dismember here, enough to make scum balk and balk."

Kor'O to all ships, second battlecruiser and light cruiser detected in proximity. Lar'Shi Sulaco, continue on attack vector on the first battlecruiser, Lar'shi Pegasus redeploy to engage the second! Sirenia and Anette Squadrons move to engage the light cruiser! Nightwish and Delain squadrons continue bombardment of the first battlecruiser.

The Kor'O almost need not have given any orders. Already the Kass'l class gunships of Sirenia and Anette squadrons were on an intercept course with the light cruiser, and the second newly appeared battlecruiser was already being hammered by the railcannons of K-42's Il'fannor class starships, with his flagship's own Kass'l escorts lending their fire as well as the Lar'shi moved in to deliver the killing blow.

Despite everything thrown at the Jotunheim, Arch Magos Taleghan's shield modifications held; but he had paid a heavy price, damaging much of his finer cogitcators. Whatever the alien fleet commander had dreamed up, of ships within the shields, missiles railing across the vulnerable hull, the alien had not encountered a interlocked void shield, that said, Taleghan had not expected such mighty ordinance to be thrown at the Jotunheim.

Stumbling as another surge pulsed through the spirit of the warship, the Void capacitors whining and plunging as he redirected the catastrophic energies back into the shield wall as they interwove across near breaches. A smaller part of his mind concentrated on picking up each member of the Inquisitor Lord's retinue. Dask arrived first, followed by El'Mo.. both without the much fought for xenos STC cube. Several more members arrived, with many being transferred straight to the apothecaries.

The careful distraction, the multiple teams and stealthy insertions had all come down to nothing, the STC was out of his grasp, nay, out of Dask's own grasp and arm. As he absorbed another surge, that nearly matched his rising frustration - the disabled Manta vented out into space, right in the path of the Jotunheim. Before he could even adjust for the collision as the Jotunheim passed the orbital to teleport the last of the Imperials away, the transport was dashed to pieces across the forward void wall - and then he saw it - the unmistakeable signature of the xenos STC; had they? Why would they!?

"Admiral, tractor beam every piece of refuse in this area directly to hangar 31! Then make best speed beyond the gravity well; the shields should survive the escape. I will be in Hangar 31"
"As you will Lord Magos"

With curiosity of a pending original discovery, Taleghan descended with his surviving Astartes to Hangar 31...

"Aun Ryumyo, what did you give to the Shas, who fired the "datacore"?"
"You remember the booby trap and my order to recover it?"
"So there is now a booby trap inside the battlecruiser?"
"Yes, a plasma warhead with EMP, to be exact", replied the Aun.
The group reached the upper decks. 'Still five decks left to Command Deck', Jo'Chma'nn thought.

Against all odds, the battlecruiser limped on. It's extra sheilding had lasted far longer than anticipated. But there was one thing that no-one aboard it could have predicted...

Kor'O to all missile armed ships, nova warhead deployment authorised. I say again, arm nova warheads.

When the waves of missiles again lanced out from K-42's ships, they were not armed with any ordinary warheads, but instead with nova warheads. A revolutionary new form of ordinance, nova munitions had only just been made possible as an offshoot of the technology that went into developing the XV-104 battlesuit's own miniature nova reactor, and had only been issued to a small handful of fleets for field-testing. The advanced exotic-matter warheads were extremely volatile, but also far more destructive than anything seen before.

When they struck the battlecruiser, the whole of the battle space was transformed. At once a baleful blue-purple light bathed the entire surrounding area, drowning out the stars. To any combatants, it had seemed that the starry sky had turned to a brilliant day. At such dangerously close range the immense shockwave buffeted and rocked both the orbital and the starships around it, knocking many over off their feet. At the centre of the spectacle was a cataclysmic maelstrom of destructive force, the full fury of the fundamental forces of the universe being unleashed on the battlecruiser. Not even an interlocked void shield could withstand such a terrible power, and it's generators sparked, overloaded and blew apart, and without them the ship was rent apart by the catastrophic force.

As the particle fields settled, the battlecruiser had emerged intact, but crippled, with many of it's crew dead or dying, it's hull integrity at bare minimum, and only a small amount of power to it's systems.

Moments later the false data core detonated inside it.

Dask reeled as the ship was hit with fiercer and fiercer attacks. Taleghan had descended to deck 31 to see if the data core had been recovered, leaving Dask with his failure and his shame.

His gut burned, but he remained alert. A nearby servitor turned to him,
"I have a message from Lord Taleghan". Had they succeeded? "You are to correct your failure and retrieve the data core." So, the xeno scum had resorted to even more deceit than usual. He flexed his replacement arm and picked up his equipment. "Very well."

He knew where it was. They'd already told him. The only place it could be is heading for was their most defensible position.
He knelt, and the Magos began their incantation. Darkness. Then he was once again standing in the dark of the Orbital.

Working furiously, the operatives of T'n'cha managed the force walls of the security field network. Any time friendly IFF's approached and cameras authenticated Tau forces, a commando or covert kor'vessa would deactivate the force walls and let them pass. The crackle his of fields deactivating and reactivating is easily lost to those running about the corridors. Yet it was the trapped and abandoned imperial henchmen that found themselves crashing into the invisible force walls and trapped in small groups in the corridors of the lower decks.

"Shas'Nel! We have an Aun and retinue approaching the upper decks."

The commando commander swung over to the tech and peered over his shoulder at the screen. Supported by a retinue of the Firecaste, and Aun was making his way up the decks toward the command floors.

"Teams three and seven, you are closest to his approach, secure the corridors between the Aun and our cordon."

Flickers of the icons representing her teams acknowledged the order and two of her commando teams peeled off of their consoles to go clean out the corridors between the Aun and T'n'cha's secured command deck. Things seemed to be getting secured within the orbital, but three gue'la vessels still plowed the void outside. They were going to need more support out there.

"Base Plate this is T'n'cha. Mission secured, new objectives updated and in process. Would really like to not get vaporized by star ship weapons in here."

She turns to the holo feed to see K-42 still punishing the Imperial Battle Cruiser even if the shield around it seemed to be still holding. If the Ko'Vash'Da didn't join the fray the advantage could swing away from K-42. A problem to be dealt with if it came to that she reminded herself.

"Three, Seven, status."

Silently the Kor'O watched as the Imperial ships joined the fray. The soft blue glow of the holo boards making every exchange of fire a tactical read out. Interlocking void arrays... that was new. The munitions of the Tau fleet were costing the vessel more than what was apparent from the outside he was sure, but for now the enemy battle cruiser remained stalwart.

"Bring us about, I want all batteries primed and locked onto the engines of the main vessel here."

A single digit highlighted the Jotunheim.

"I want her crippled. That is the vessel that seems to be leading the assault. The modification to it's specifications are extensive. We could use any information we can glean from it's capture."

One of the Kor'Ui gulped and looked up.

"But Kor'O, the Aun said tha..."

"I know what Aun'Shea said, do as I command. It is another of her tests, I am sure of it."

He stroked his jaw line as the bridge crew worked to make his order a reality.

"We will have one shot at this Kor, let's show the gue'la what real pilots can do."

Unseen to friend or foe, the cloaked Ko'Vash'Da dropped from it's observational position to take up a firing arc on the rear of the Jotunheim. In the view screen the old Kor could see the fiery engines of the Jotunheim growing larger and larger as his covert vessel approached at speed. The Kor crew waited, watching the Kor'O, and glancing at their holo screens waiting for the order. Patience is the key...

A massive barrage from K-42 rippled across the void shield and as it shimmered the Kor'O said one word.

"Now."

Seeming to materialize from no where directly behind the Jotunheim roared the Ko'Vash'Da. The highly modified Emissary Class shimmered clear of it's stealth field and opened fire with everything. The prow shield was offline due to the power it had required to maintain the stealth field, but the banks of rail cannons and ion batteries sang a violent song into the rear of the Jotunheim. Even as space seemed to erupt into cataclysm from the proto-type warheads, the Kor'O only hoped it was enough to pierce the flickering void array.

Lord Inquisitor Lyeotius understood what was happening without recourse to his ship's instruments: two squadrons of xenos strikecraft had pulled away from the--

--a pulse rippled his psychic perception a split second before the
Vanaheimr shuddered and its bridge displays flickered. The light cruiser was undamaged; it hadn't been the target of the blast. Lyeotius' prey, the battlecruiser Jotunheim, had been struck with some sort of powerful xenos ordnance. But the battlecruiser's void shields still held, if barely, and it even appeared to be gathering speed toward the edge of the gravity well.

Lyeotius could not leave the heretic magos' fate in the hands of the xenos. It was a fool's hope to believe the xenos could destroy a threat as powerful as Arch Magos Taleghan. The Lord Inquisitor would have to see to it personally. "Captain, I leave this battle in your capable hands. Prioritize enemy ordnance, but do not needlessly antagonize the larger xenos capital ships. I will be in the launch bay."

"Shas'Nel, I bid you to have someone place a deadmens switch unto this device", spoke Aun Ryumyo, "it must not fall into the enemies hands. Link the deadmens switch to my life signal and then hide it inside the console. Make sure its range does not exceed 50ft."
