How can I name my units?

I have played my first game 40k game with the Tau, a week ago last Saturady, for ITTD (International Table Top Day).

After which I wanted to personalise my army, with names, and personalities. I thought as it was my first game I'd name the 2 Firewarrior squads:

Shas'Lthe
Shas'Do

Is this the correct usage of the words, and would teams be named like this - as authentic to Tau schemes as one could be. Or is this more the naming convention of each soldier?

Naming convention tips, please :)

There are a few options.

The simplest one is to just name the squad after it's Shas'ui. You could create names for the equad leaders of your Firewarrior teams and then simply name them 'Firewarrior Team [Shas'ui's Name]'.

If you want something more elaborate, or just more rooted in official background material, then you could adapt the official naming conventions for Tau spacecraft. Tau ship names follow a similar template to the names of an individual Tau. The first part is the starship's Sept of origin, the second part is its class name, the third is the personal name of its first commander and the final part is the personal name of its current commander (if the current commander is not the first).

Borrowing this system, you would get something like, for example, "T'au'Shas'la'[Shas'ui's Name][Other Shas'ui's Name]". I'm not sure if there has ever been any official Tau'sia names given to distinguish between different Tau infantry teams, which is the only obstacle I could see to this approach.

A third approach could be to name the infantry teams after suitably Tauish concepts. 'Firewarrior team Unity' 'Firewarrior team Progress' and so on.

Finally, you could simply dispense with formalities and name them after whatever you wish. For my Tau fleet in Battlefleet Gothic, for example, I name my individual ships after either famous ships from Science Fiction or persons or concepts I find fitting for them, and I name my escort squadrons (and two Emissaries) after bands and singers that I like. For reference (and because I'm one of those Battlefleet Gothic players that love flaunting their fleet list):

Il'fannor Merchant class starship - Serenity (flagship)

Gal'leath Explorer class starship - Galactica

Gal'leath Explorer class starship - National Geographic

Il'fannor Merchant class starship - Tantive IV

Il'fannor Merchant class starship - Heart of Gold

Il'fannor Merchant class starship - Alice Liddell

Lar'shi Hero class starship - Sulaco

Lar'shi Hero class starship - Pegasus

Skether'qan Messenger class starship - Nostromo

Skether'qan Messenger class starship - Prometheus

Skether'qan Messenger class starship - Millennium Falcon

Or'es El'leath Custodian class carrier - Zelbinion

Il'Porrui Emissary class starship - Sharon Den Adel

Il'Porrui Emissary class starship - Charlotte Wessels

6 Kir'qath Defender class starships - Nightwish Squadron

6 Kir'qath Defender class starships - Delain Squadron

3 Kass'l Orca gunships - Sirenia Squadron

3 Kass'l Orca gunships - Imperia Squadron

2 Kass'l Orca gunships - Anette Squadron

2 Kass'l Orca gunships - Tarja Squadron

2 Kass'l Orca gunships - Shuttle 1 and Shuttle 2 (partnered with Serenity)

3 Kir'shas'vre Castellan class heavy escorts - Lacuna Squadron

3(4) Kir'la Warden class carrier escorts - Cristina Squadron

They actually do have 'normal' Tau'sia names as well, but they're only really used for background writing.

The squads in the Infiltration Cadre Burning Dawn formation box have their own names.

Actually yes as Panzer further solidifies with his proof.
In the new Painting book for tau they do destinguish the diffrent teams by name and leaders. and your namking convention with [sept][cast+ rank][Name due to feat][...]

So a Fire warrior can have tons of names. but its usualy one thing that sets them out more. Like shas'O cartfreight erhh I mean Farsight ( Bonus point to the one that gets that reference :) ) or like shas'O shadowsun

so for instance in name giving example. if we did a water cast embassy model who always remaind calm and peacefull during negotiations a fitting name for that individual would have been if they were ranked a diplomat : N'dras Por'El Doran

Otherwise I kinda picture them as nameless ones... so basicly in class the unnoticable ones would be Teacher:"Hey, you! yes you, blue fish # 34851. Quiet down, I'm tryign to teach to you why Kroot loves fish!"

Regardless :) it's your fluff most of all so have fun with it
