So, if you're anything like me, what your army does on the tabletop is only a fraction of the enjoyment opportunities they provide. Customising, converting, and building unique models is a joy all of its own. Painting... well it's not my strongest suit, but I'm sure its one of the hobbies major appealing factors. And of course, since we're in the library, there's the backstory.

As someone who absolutely loves exploring a universe and its lore, 40K is incredible due to how rich and storied it is, as a well-established and storied universe with so much to discover and learn. Of course, when a setting gives you that much story, it just feels downright WRONG to not create a story of your own.

So, that's what I propose this thread is for, posting the backstories and character write-ups, as well as any adventures of our commanders, veterans, or notable individuals. Why should the named characters from GW be the only ones with detailed histories? Shas'O Kel'var has just as distinct a personality as O'Shovah, or Commander Sternshield.

So, I'll kick it off with some of my own characters, and please continue the trend with your own creations.

Kakapo42 has suggested this helpful template if you'd like a hand in putting together a post, but please feel free to go completely free-form if you like, or to add or remove categories as you like. We want to hear about your unique, individual characters, so if you feel the template hampers your creativity, please do whatever works for you.

I do think it's a really useful tool, however and I'm sure we'll make good use of it.

Shas'O Kel'shan Xauk'Fi'rios Kel'var (Stoic or Stubborn, depending on how complimentary you're feeling)

Kel'var led a fairly routine life as a fire warrior, rising through the ranks from Shas'saal in due order with a record that was not quite exemplary, but certainly above average. His stubbornness emerged early on, with him often staying late to repeat an exercise until he had mastered it, and always being the last of his unit to pull back when a retreat was called, staying to guard the others until they were all safely away.

His leadership potential was identified early on by his instructors, and it came as no surprise when he was the first of his bonded unit to achieve Shas'ui rank. His initial unit has been whittled down considerably by casualties over the years, but Kel'var has ensured that it's two remaining members serve in the honourable position of his bodyguards, and the bond of their Ta'lissera has only strengthened over the years.

993.M41 - Nimbosa

Kel'var served in the Nimbosa crusade as a Shas'vre gaining considerable experience fighting Space Marines in numerous engagements with the Adeptus Astartes of the Black Templars chapter. It was here that he first employed the Fireknife configuration, and he has since adopted the plasma rifle and missile pod as his battelsuit's standard weapon loadout.

999.M41 - Mon'Rra

His promotion to Shas'O came at a later stage, during the establishment of the Fi'rios sept. Kel'var at this stage held the rank of Shas'el having passed his trial by fire upon the conclusion of the Nimbosa conflict. The commander he currently served under was Shas'O Vash'ya Len'ra, a careful and cautious commander whose care for her troops was matched only by her tactical acumen.

It was in a battle for a strategically important and habitable moon of one of the system's outer planets that the tragic events that lead to Kel'var'r promotion occurred. The T'au ships sent to establish an outpost here in the early stages of the conflict were ambushed by Ork Freebooterz and their vessels were crippled, with many of them being so badly damaged that they crashed to the moon's surface, causing catastrophic damage and cutting short a great many Tau lives, including O'Len'ra's.

Kel'var survived the crash landing, but with the Ork ships in orbit now deploying hordes of greenskins to the surface, that survival was by no means guaranteed in the long term. The Ork presence in orbit meant that extraction was unlikely without a sizable naval force, and T'au forces across the system were already fully engaged meaning that such a thing would not have been possible even if Kel'var had been able to get a message out to them.

Refusing to admit defeat, Kel'var assumed command of the surviving T'au forces planetside, rallying the warriors of the Fire Caste and leading them on a masterful survival campaign. As the highest ranking officer, the burden of leadership fell to him, and he was not one to shirk responsibility.

The campaign itself took varied forms, with Kel'var often leading his forces on highly mobile treks to evade large Ork forces, before fortifying a location to engage smaller bands of the aliens, wiping them out before moving on. This sort of behaviour was representative of Kel'vars belief in a fluid tactical mindset, not confining himself to any one particular approach.
Combined arms, synergy, and an open mind were his core tenets, something he had picked up from his studies of Puretide's meditations and battle records. Kel'var had naturally set himself the lofty task of attempting to grasp this legendary commander's mindset in its entirety, rather than focusing on one aspect as he had seen other commanders do, including those under whom he had served. His stubbornness would not allow him to settle for less.

As it was, the Nont'Mon'Rra (Doubtful Black Shadow) - as this extended flight for survival was deemed by the survivors due to the constant uncertainty of whether any of them would survive - was not only successful in evading Ork pursuit and minimising casualties among those T'au who survived the initial disaster, it even succeeded in dealing noticeable blows to the Ork presence on the moon. The moon itself was eventually dubbed Mon'Rra in memory of all those who perished in the catastrophe.

It was in this Nont'Mon'Rra that Kel'var met Kroot Elder Shaper Harkod, and then-Shas'ui Ekil'nar, a skilled pathfinder whose scouting expertise was pivotal to the success of Kel'vars attempts to avoid large concentrations of Orks. Both of these individuals would go on to become permanent fixtures of Kel'var's force when he was awarded his own command.

The ragtag cadre formed strong bonds of camaraderie in this tense and dangerous period, with Kel'var's team reaffirming their Ta'lissera bond.

After several weeks of these hit-and-run survival tactics, relief finally arrived in the form of a minor fleet group that was freed up after the Ork Raiders harrying them were successfully chased out of the system. The survivors were quickly extracted, and the fresh troops took over the fighting in the moon's theatre, O'Len'ra's forces being far too diminished to operate as a viable military force for the task at hand.

Kel'var was soon awarded the rank of Shas'o by accord of O'Kais, the prominent commander of the Fi'rios conquest, and the ethereal Aun'el Jed'ai who was greatly impressed by Kel'var's performance and the character he displayed upon Mon'Rra, claiming that individuals such as Kel'var were what made the Tau'va possible.
He was given command of O'Len'ra's forces, supplemented by new recruits and transfers from other cadres. Those who endured the Nont'Mon'Rra under Kel'var's leadership have a special trust in their commander and in one another that is lacking in newer members of the force. The survivors all bear a black circle on their combat gear as a badge of what they overcame on that moon.

Among the new additions were Aun'el Jed'ai himself, the ethereal choosing to attach himself to Kel'var's force to "observe" and as a statement of support for what Kel'var represented. Shas'vre Myen'shi, a hammerhead commander who had distinguished himself in the battles on Fi'rios itself was also assigned to Kel'var's cadre, and he quickly began to prove his worth and reputation.

Kel'var added the sept of Fi'rios to his name, despite being from Kel'shan himself, as it was on Fi'rios that he was forced to accept the burden of command and the weight of the lives depending on him. In Kel'var's explanation, this changed who he was fundamentally, and while Shas'vre Kel'var was a native of Kel'shan, Shas'O Kel'var was born on Fi'rios.
Kel'var performed mop-up operations with his new command, clearing up Greenskin problems across the new sept, and engaging with Dark Eldar raiders on one occasion. His first major war zone as a Shas'O however, was Mu'gulath Bay.

999.M41 - Agrellan

It was in the invasion of the Imperial world of Agrellan that Kel'var truly distinguished himself as a commander able to adapt to different tactical situations. Some among high command had doubted that this new-comer to the rank was not suited to

I feel ya bro and I contribute to this effort. My T'au Scept is a Human World in fact so I will share a Human Hero.

Commander Donovan Zaragoza from The Victoria
The first Fire Warrior of Fior'serra that managed to surpass his trials fire and climbed in the military hierarchy of the T'au fire caste. He was the first Gue'vesa to be chosen by the generals of the Farsight Enclaves as field commander and pilot of an XV-85 Enforcer BattleSuit. Fior O’ Zaragoza as he was name by the T’au faced the hive of the Hive Fleet Kraken in the constant defense of the four systems commanded by Shas O'Vesa. In multiple incursions of the Tyranids Zaragosa and its teams of XV-8 Crisis contained and eradicated the threat of the swarm. His suit always armed with four fusion blasters became a symbol of hope to such a degree that after the approval of Farsight himself and with the participation of human engineers and the earth caste the XV-85FS was designed for Zaragoza and future human commanders . Words of hope and strength were inscribed on his suit and were also used until the last battle for the eradication of the Tyranids in which Zaragoza gave his life facing and annihilating the last Swarm Lord with which the Gorgon Hive Fleet counted at the sector.

Hell yeah!
Making up characters and stories for the different 'verses I follow has always been a favourite kill-time of mine, and when a friend introduced me to 40k a few years back I had to jump on the lore-train!

I present to you the most recent character of my design, and by far one of the most outlandish (as a part of a fun project some friends and I are workin' on, he's even got rules!)

~

Name: Auxiliary Commander Sha’yebgela (Contraction of Sha’yebe'geli'la {Wind Strider})
Age: 62 years, Born 937.M41, owing to periods of stasis and minor genetic augmentation his biological age is closer to 35 years.
Faction: Farsight Enclaves/Paid Auxiliaries (Mercenary troops)
Rank: Dras’o (Unofficial title, disambiguation of ‘dras’la’ (Metal Caste, refers to outsiders and rebels) reports to high authority (Shas’o) but almost exclusively commands his own cadre)
Homeworld: None – Dras’o Sha’yebgela rejects his heritage for the life of an outsider, living aboard the Dras'vattra's command ship, Open Wings.

Windstrider is a mercenary spirit, branded a rebel, separatist and outsider within the T’au Empire after he defected with a small collection of ships in the closing months of the Great War of Confederation, forming the mercenary fleet later referred to as the Dras'vattra.

He usually finds himself in the employ of the Farsight Enclaves who accommodate his mix-matched cadre, offering a home-port where the fleet can repair and re-supply between campaigns in exchange for services rendered during times of crisis.
Windstrider proved true to his word in 997.M41 when the forces of Hive Fleet Kraken invaded the Farsight Enclaves directly, the commander relegating the Dras'vattra to roles where the Enclaves' own vessels would prove too few.
Support craft linked with relief efforts to evacuate civilian colonies and orbitals, combat ships provided a screening force for Enclave supply lines and teams of gunships harassed the Hive Fleet's vanguard actions with small-scale hit-and-run attacks.

His travels have taken him far and wide throughout the galaxy (though he is a long way from seeing as much as he would like), earning him a name and a wealth of experience that would serve him well throughout his outlandish existence aboard the Open Wings.

Shas'vre El'es'tan (Noble Disgrace)

While most T'au acquire their names by others ascribing the term to them, El'es'tan deliberately chose the name Es'tan ("Disgrace" or "Failure") for himself as that is how he sees himself. The "El" that has since been appended to it, is the work of his comrades in arms, who recognise the nobility he denies himself.

A warrior of incredible skill and courage, El'es'tan was an exemplar of the warrior ways of the Fire Caste. Never one for leadership, he nevertheless reached the pinnacle of skill and became a masterful battlesuit pilot, canny warrior, and a paragon of the virtues embodied in the code of fire. Many times he was granted the opportunity to command, but El'es'tan knew his skills well, and he knew that he would serve the Tau'va best not as a leader, but as a soldier.

El'es'tan's combat record was spotless, and was used by many fire caste academy instructors as an example of what a warrior of the fire caste should aspire to, until one day, in a conflict with a Tyranid splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Gorgon, El'es'tan's Shas'O - a close friend of his since childhood and the one whom he was sworn to protect - was slain by a ravener assault. El'es'tan's own battlesuit had already been critically damaged earlier in the battle, leaving him helpless to save his commander.

Since this failure, El'es'tan has sought only two things: death, and the most powerful weaponry available to him.

His already formidable combat prowess was made even more evident as his disregard for risk grew. increasingly, El'es'tan threw himself into suicidal engagements, refusing to withdraw even in the face of insurmountable odds, but never succumbing to the foe.
In this way, he has almost single-handedly secured victory for T'au forces in several battles and he has racked up numerous acknowledgements of his acts of heroism and selfless valour.

El'es'tan seeks to find an honourable end in battle to redeem himself after his failure to save his commander but holds to the values of the Tau'va far to strongly to throw his life away. Instead, he seeks out ways to serve the Greater Good that entail the highest degree of risk hoping to find a way to serve his fellow T'au, and find his absolution in one act.
As a result, El'es'tan not only accepts suicide missions at every opportunity, but also volunteers to test any and all experimental new weapon systems knowing that this field testing will benefit the Tau'va and rationalising that if he is the one to test them, he is also protecting another warrior of the fire caste from facing the unknown risks.
As it is, El'es'tan seems to live a charmed life and despite actively seeking his own death, he is unable to find it. He refuses to fight with anything less than his all, not out of self-preservation, but because he refuses to fail the warriors depending on him by giving less than his all.

When pilots were being sought for the new XV-104 Riptide Battlesuit, El'es'tan's skills made him a natural choice, and he relished the chance to pilot a weapon that put as much power at his fingertips as the riptide did, well knowing that perhaps the unstable Nova Reactor would finally help him find the end he craved.

He displayed an uncanny skill at piloting the new war machine, and demonstrated an almost preternatural ability to harness as much power as the protoype power source could provide, often pushing it far beyond the limits prescribed as safe by Earth Caste engineers. Despite this, El'es'tan has never once experienced an overload of his Nova Reactor. Some of the fire caste have taken to joking that Death is too fond of playing this game with El'es'tan to let him stop playing that easily, dancing out of his reach every time the Shas'vre tries to embrace it.

It is an interesting reversal of roles if that is the case, with death seeking top evade the soldier seeking it, rather than a warrior doing all that he can to survive while death grasps for them.

During the Mu'gulath Bay offensive, El'es'tan was one of the pilots leading the XV-104 suit in its first open war engagement. In the midst of the battle, El'es'tan succeeded in shielding a large portion of one of the assault forces from a defensive bombardment through a potentially deadly move when he siphoned an enormous amount of energy from the suits Nova Reactor to push the riptide's shield generator for beyond its theoretical limits.
Not only did he survive this experience, but his actions saved the lives of Shas'o Kel'var - a rising star in the ranks of the Third Sphere Expansion fire caste - but also his ethereal majesty Aun'el Jed'ai.

Some argue that, through this manoeuvre, Shas'vre El'es'tan has finally succeeded in repaying the debt of his dishonour by his willingness to sacrifice himself to save the troops he shielded, and through saving the life of a Shas'O and an Ethereal.

For El'es'tan however, there can be no redemption, only an endless quest for honourable death that constantly eludes him. He has attached himself to Shas'O Kel'var's personal cadre in a show of almost insubordinate independence, but the Shas'O and Aun'el Jed'ai have seen to it that this transfer was authorised.
It is unclear why El'es'tan wishes to accompany Kel'var; perhaps he believes that the commander will lead him to new challenges, or perhaps he views Kel'var as his new charge after having shielde him from death once and now seeks to serve as saz'nami to this young commander.
Kel'var knows what El'es'tan is attempting to achieve, and he permitted the Shas'vre to join his cadre not only due to his impressive combat proficiency, but also because Kel'var hopes he can help El'es'tan to forgive himself and find absolution outside of death.

For his part, El'es'tan has accepted a tragic path and will continue to serve the Tau'va with a selfless, foolhardy recklessness until he either achieves his impossible restoration, or meets and honourable end in combat.

As someone who also enjoys tinkering with background lore just as much as, if not more than, any other part of the hobby, I wholeheartedly concur with this sentiment, and have argued loudly as much for some time now.

Finally, I saw something like this for cadres, but I haven't found anything specifically for our own characters. If this sort of thread already exists, or if it should be in a different forum, just let me know.

Currently there is no character focused equivalent to our Tau Empire Cadre Census thread, but I think this thread could easily become one. Thus, to this end, here's a character template I whipped up to add an extra level of authenticity. Members who have already posted character details are free to edit their posts to fit the template, or leave them as they are.

To use the template, simply copy and paste it into your post and replace the guidelines in it with the appropriate information about your character.

I tend to write my background free from, but if that template helps people flesh out their characters, I'm all for it.
I'll edit the original post in the morning to include the template and explain the thread in a more "official" way rather than just sounding like me being excited to share my personal back stories :)

Thanks for the contribution Kakapo, any chance you'll be filling out that template yourself?

NAME: Aun'el Vior'la Al'Shi Je'dai (Guiding Blade)

KNOWN ALIASES: Shaper Harkod often simply refers to Je'dai as "The Fighter" given his skill in close quarters combat. He is called the "Fiery Aun" by the fire caste warriors he accompanies, in recognition of his martial skill, and many personality traits generally associated with the Shas.

SPECIES: Tau

RANK: El

CASTE: Aun - Ethereal

SEX: Male

AFFILIATION: T'au Empire

DATE OF BIRTH: 977 M.41 (24 years old in 001.M42)

PLACE OF BIRTH: Sher'ash'rad - a planet within the territory of the Vior'la sept.

KNOWN KIN: Aun'vre Vior'la Bentu'cha (Wise Purpose) - Elder Sister. Deceased. Killed in the fighting on Lagan in 989.M41

KNOWN AFFILIATES:
Shas'O Kel'var, Fio'nel Olo'noy, Elder Shaper Harkod

COMMENDATIONS:
Jed'ai has achieved the highest rank of skill for his mastery of the honour blade, honing his skills to near perfection with all its traditional forms.

NOTABLE BIOGRAPHIC EVENTS:
999.M41 - The Mon'rra rescue: It is Aun'vre Jed'ai that leads the fleet that relieves Kel'var and his survivors on the moon of Mon'rra during the Fi'rios campaign.
999.M41 - Mu'gulath Bay: Aun'el Jed'ai had a brush with death and was nearly slain, along with Shas'O Kel'var and a sizable portion of his cadre, in the assault on Agrellan Hive. They were only saved by the timely intervention of Shas'vre El'es'tan.

PERSONAL BIO:
Jed'ai had always served on the rising crest of the T'au Empire's wave of expansion, accompanying various fire caste cadres throughout his life, motivated in part by his heritage as a native of Vior'la, and in part due to the loss of his elder sister in the Purging of Lagan when Jed'ai was only 11 years old.
He has a near hero worship for the ethereal Aun'shi, and it was out of reverence for this legendary figure that Jed'ai devoted himself to mastering the honour blade.

Jed'ai is still an Aun and as such, is still a philosopher, politician, and leader, but he has honed his skills as a warrior too, believing that those who command warriors to their deaths should be willing to make the same commitments. He also believes the only way to truly value the warriors under his charge, is to understand them and their experience of life, a stance he extends to all he encounters, including Kroot and humans.

He has spent much time with Shaper Harkod, learning about kroot culture, and has found the exchange of combat techniques to be a useful way of putting the grizzled elder at ease. It has also helped him acquire new and unique techniques for the honour blade that are not a part of the traditional repertoire.

Jed'ai was still Aun'vre when he led the fleet that relieved Kel'var's beleaguered fighters on Mon'rra, but succeeded to Aun'el in the wake of Fi'rios being established as a fully fledged sept, much as Kel'var was promoted to a Shas'O.

Aun'el has a deep respect for Kel'var, which the commander returns. Despite being several years his senior, Kel'var will defer to the ethereal's leadership, but Jed'ai is wise enough to take Kel'var's advice into account whenever he makes a decision, for the commander is not just a canny tactician, but also a good judge of character.

As an individual who seeks to learn all he can, it is only natural that Jed'ai would seek out interactions with the representatives of the other castes wherever he goes, and soon after joining Kel'var's forces, he struck up a friendship with Fio'nel Olo'noy, a brilliant earth caste engineer a few years his junior. It was Olo'noy who crafted the shield generator Jed'ai uses in battle, arguing that if she could not convince their resident Aun to avoid combat, she could still do something to keep him alive.
As the two youngest members of the inner circle of Kel'var's cadre, the two have developed a close bond that is markedly different from the warrior's respect shared between Jed'ai and Kel'var.

CURRENT STATUS: Attached to Shas'O Kel'var's Expeditionary Cadre as part of the Fifth Sphere Expansion.

LAST KNOWN LOCATION: In transit.

MISSION STATUS: Pending...

NAME: Fio'nel T'olku Olo'noy
KNOWN ALIASES: Olo'noy translates as "Quick/Nimble Fingers" and was an epithet that the engineer acquired due to her habit to fidget with her fingers, incessantly tinkering with one thing or another. When working on a project, Olo'noy's fingers do seem to dance across the surface, wielding her tools with great precision and speed.

SPECIES: T'au

RANK: 'Nel

DATE OF BIRTH: 979.M41 (22 years old in 001.M41)

PLACE OF BIRTH: T'olku - Planetary Capitol

KNOWN KIN: Fio'O T'olku Kai'Re - Uncle

Kai'Re was a civil engineer on T'olku - now retired - who would often show Olo'noy his current projects and teach her lessons from his hard-won experience ever since she was a child living on T'olku. He was renowned for being exceptionally large for an earth caste (hence his name, Big-Strong) and would often walk around construction sites carrying Olo'noy on his shoulders for a full day.

984.M41 - Visited the T'olku diplomatic centre for the first time
987.M41 - Graduated from the T'olku earth caste academy as a Fio'la
989.M41 - Transfers to the frontier territory of Meren'shen (Logan XII to the Imperium) to assist water caste members in negotiations by improving their translation software and technology
991.M41 - Promoted to Fio'ui
993.M41 - Negotiations break down and the water caste delegation is attacked by imperial forces. Olo'noy, the diplomats, and the rest of the delegation were forced to endure the attack as fire caste forces drove back the assault and escorted the delegation to safety. This was Olo'noy's first experience of warfare.
994.M41 - Olo'noy volunteers to join the third sphere expansion fleets as an earth caste engineer assisting the fire caste cadres. Her experiences on Meren'shen doubtless influenced this decision.
995.M41 - Promoted to Fio'vre
999.M41 - Olo'noy assists O'Kais's forces in the conquest and settlement of Fi'rios and is subsequently granted the rank of Fio'nel and assigned to Shas'O Kel'vars newly formed cadre.

PERSONAL BIO:
Olo'noy was born on the planet of T'olku, to an architect and mine foreman. She was cared for and did well in her training, and all expected that she would take a position on T'olku as just another civilian Fio in some or other capacity.

Some of Olo'noy's fondest memories are of when her uncle Kai're would bring her collections of spare parts and scraps to tinker with, her earliest project being an attempt to create a drone to do her chores for her. Her first several attempts failed, but on her fifth try, Olo'noy succeeded in constructing a functional if rudimentary domestic assistance drone. Kai're continued to bring her bits and pieces and encouraged her to explore such personal projects outside of her official training.

One day, when she was five years old, Olo'noy was taken on an educational trip to the T'olku diplomatic centre and was astonished at the variety of species and cultures mixing there. This was the day when any hope of a quiet life on T'olku disappeared, although it would only become apparent many years later.

In her studies, Olo'noy excelled in software coding, and electronic engineering, caring little for large-scale mechanical or urban construction. Despite her average performance in these latter fields, such were her achievements in the former that she quickly gained the personal attention of her instructors, one of whom set her an exercise as a performance test that was actually a current project he himself was working on. He was very surprised when Olo'noy returned to him within a week having found a solution.
Such rapid progress was due to her unorthodox way of thinking, a result of her personal tinkering and having to make do with the parts she had in her personal projects. She would often find solutions that other missed, or discover a new way to do something that was normally overlooked. Her instructor commended her for her achievements and began to set her more difficult tasks to solve, stretching Olo'noy's ability to innovate, and pushing her to new and greater breakthroughs.

Throughout all this, her successes were still limited to those aspects of her studies that she found interesting, as her instructor discovered one day when he set her what he perceived to be a relatively simple city planning problem, especially for someone of her ability. When Olo'noy remained stumped by the problem after two weeks, her instructor realised there was an issue and contacted Kai're, knowing how much of an influence he had been in his niece's life.

Upon having the situation explained, Kai're took it upon himself to demonstrate the importance of those mundane and "boring" aspects of her studies, showing how they all served the Tau'va and that all T'au must be willing to do their part to serve the Greater Good, whether it is interesting or not. Kai're's genuine belief moved Olo'noy and she rededicated herself to her studies, forcing herself to work even harder at those aspects she had previously let slip. Within a year of this conversation, Olo'noy had risen to the top position in her class, and very nearly in the entire academy.

Her fascination with other species and cultures never faded, and her graduation project was a new form of translation-drone, intended to assist water caste delegates with deciphering new alien languages to facilitate communication. This project was a sign of things to come, for no sooner had Olo'noy graduated than she applied to accompany water caste ambassadors to frontier zones to continue her work with translation software and technology. Her request was approved, and she soon made ship for the Meren'shen system where the water caste was involved in deadlocked negotiations with Imperial representatives.

The journey to Meren'shen took several months in cryo-stasis, and by the time Olo'noy arrived, the situation had markedly deteriorated. Nevertheless, things were not hopeless, and the water caste envoys were highly skilled, they managed to keep the deadlock protracted for a further four years, and even managed to make some headway with their demands, and all the while more T'au arrived, increasing their presence in the system and normalising the notion of co-existing with the xenos to imperial citizens. Olo'noy spent these years developing advanced translation algorithms and miniaturising the technology she had so far only succeeded in fielding on a drone chassis into a handheld version.

Her final goal was to be able to incorporate the new translation tech into the standard earpiece, but so far her efforts remain stymied. While on Meren'shen, she even conducted several in-person interviews with imperials to learn more about their language, and also to feed her fascination regarding other species. It was during one such trip to an imperial settlement that things on Meresh'nen fell apart.

It became apparent that the human negotiators had simply been buying time when a flotilla of Imperial warships entered the system unannounced. Across the planet's surface, chaos erupted as Imperials attacked scattered groups of Tau. Ordinary citizens were forced to action lest they be labelled as accomplices of the aliens, and within hours, violence raged across the planet. The water caste delegates were gunned down at the negotiating table, and the Tau compound was raided by PDF forces, as well as an angry mob, driven to violence by charismatic demagogues and members of the Ecclesiarchy. Had Olo'noy been present, she likely would have been killed, but as it was, the fire warrior accompanying her managed to escort Olo'noy safely to a rendezvous point where Orcas were collecting civilians and deploying Tau armed forced en masse. The battle for Meren'shen had begun, and though it would rage for several months, those opening moments would forever remain scarred into Olo'noy's memory as a time of great fear and terror. She was moved by the bravery and selflessness of the fire caste, and soon after the situation on Meren'shen was stabilised, Olo'noy left her diplomatic pursuits and joined the engineers assisting fire caste forces, vowing to do everything she could to protect these warriors who did everything to protect the rest of the empire.

Her translation tech has been relegated to a pet project on the side, with the majority of her time now invested in shield technology, armour repair, and drone coding. Her recent promotion in the wake of the Fi'rios conquest has put her in charge of a full team of engineers, and Olo'noy has taken to her new position with her signature diligence. The warriors of Kel'var's cadre never need to worry about their armour being anything less than perfect, and Olo'noy has even adapted drone coding to have them be more protective of fire warriors and other living creatures.

Olo'noy's fascination with other species and cultures remains prevalent and she has spent a great deal of time with Elder Shaper Harkod and the Kroot auxiliaries accompanying the force. As it is, Olo'noy is a highly outgoing and friendly individual by nature and has become friends - at least nominally - with all the members of the cadre with whom she has regular contact. Her closest friend among them, however, is undoubtedly Aun'el Jed'ai and Olo'noy personally constructed a state-of-the-art personal shield generator for him, to keep him alive in combat. She claims this is in service to the greater good, citing the catastrophic consequences should an ethereal be killed, but her true reasons are far more personal and are a combination of her protective nature, and her feelings for her friend.

As it is, Olo'noy will continue to serve the greater good with her technological skills, and will do all she can to protect the warriors she has come to call friends. Whatever the Tau'va requires of her, Olo'noy is ready to serve with pride.

NAME: Shas'vre N'dras Al'ek'sha

KNOWN ALIASES: Old Ghost

SPECIES: T'au

RANK: 'Vre

CASTE: Shas - Fire Caste

SEX: Male

AFFILIATION: T'au Empire

DATE OF BIRTH: 933.M41- Al'ek'sha is technically 68 years old in 001.M42, which would be exceptionally ancient for a T'au, but he has spent considerable periods in cryo-stasis between deployments, resulting in an effective age of only 19 years.

PLACE OF BIRTH: N'dras

KNOWN KIN: None living.

KNOWN AFFILIATES:
Fio'O Fal'shia Bentu'Caor - The Earth Caste Engineer overseeing Al'ek'sha's testing of the Ghostkeel prototype and one of the few T'au with whom Al'ek'sha is on friendly.
Shas'O Kel'var - Al'ek'sha's current commanding officer, and an individual for whom Al'ek'sha holds no small amount of disdain. Al'ek'sha was not one of the survivors of the Nont'mon'rra and initially believed that Kel'var did not have what it tool for to hold the rank of Shas'O. His opinion of the commander has ameliorated somewhat after the events of Mugulath Bay but he is still a reluctant member of the force, present out of respect for Jed'ai rather than Kel'var.
Aun'el Jed'ai - It was the young ethereal who convinced Al'ek'sha to join Kel'var's force despite the Shas'vre's misgivings, and the two often converse privately. Jed'ai has not informed Kel'var what these conversations are about, and it is unclear if he ever intends to.
Fio'nel Olo'noy - The friendly engineer has tried to form a friendship with the taciturn Shas'vre on several occasions, but her efforts have so far been rebuffed. Nevertheless, the complex technology in Al'ek'sha's battlesuit means that it requires regular attention from an earth caste to remain operational and Olo'noy ensures that this task is always hers to perform, refusing to give up on learning more about the secretive pilot from N'dras.
Shas'vre N'dras Nim'veras - Only surviving member of the N'dras Ancients, fellow Ghostkeel pilot
Ru'ro Nim'veras - Al'ek'sha's Ghostkeel AI

COMMENDATIONS:
Al'ek'sha was part of the Stealth Cadre that O'Shassera lead into the heart of the Ork encampment in the K'resh Expansion when she gained her epithet of "Shadowsun".
It was after the events of the campaign in the K'resh Expansions during the Great War of Confederation that he was earmarked for induction into the Ghostkeel project.

NOTABLE BIOGRAPHIC EVENTS:
933.M41 - Born on N'dras
942.M41 - Graduates the Fire Caste Academy on N'dras as a Shas'la
946.M41 - Scouting operations in the Western Veil Nebula, promoted to Shas'ui
948.M41 - She’enshar: Al'ek'sha leads a pathfinder team in the initial exploration of the discovered Craftworld of She’enshar before T'au forces are driven from the abandoned Eldar vessel by Harlequins.
975-988.M41 - The Great War of Confederation: Al'ek'sha serves a Shas'vre in O'Shasserra's stealth cadre and commands several sub-operation in the K'resh Expansions with his remaining N'dras team members.
303.999M.41 - Zeist Campaign: Al'ek'sha employs his newly commissioned Ghostkeel in several black-ops strikes throughout the campaign.
757.999.M41 - Mu'gulath Bay: A Ghostkeel led by Al'ek'sha performs strikes deep into enemy territory to disrupt communications and supply lines prior to the main T'au assault on Agrellan Hive.

PERSONAL BIO:
Al'ek'sha is one of the few T'au still living who was born on N'dras before its abandonment approximately 20 years later. While still a Shas'saal, Al'ek'sha's affinity for stealth and reconnaissance tactics were identified by his instructors, and he was grouped in a team of several other such cadets as part of a special training program focused on those aspects of warfare.
This group would graduate together and begin service in the Fire Caste as a pathfinder team. Initially serving under a senior Shas'ui, Al'ek'sha was subsequently promoted to this position when the officer was critically wounded in a scouting operation in the Western Veil Nebula.

Al'ek'sha leads his pathfinder in the exploration of the abandoned Craftworld of She’enshar, mapping out a significant portion of the enormous vessel. However, he and his team are forced to withdraw along with the rest of the T'au expedition when a force of Harlequins emerge from the webway portals the Earth Caste were in the process of studying.

After being forced to abandon the study of the Craftworld, Al'ek'sha enters cryo-stasis with the rest of his cadre in preparation for the voyage to the next deployment. However, a catastrophic malfunction damages their vessel, later investigations believe it to have been the result of a freak solar flare or unknown cosmic radiation. Much of the vessel's power systems are shut down completely, including life support, communications, and propulsion. The cryo-stasis systems remain mostly intact, although approximately 20% of the individuals died due to pod failure, with many others experiencing some form of brain damage. A small percentage of individuals were woken up only to find themselves still locked in their stasis pod on a derelict vessel, one such T'au being a part of Al'ek'sha's team. Ever since this voyage, Al'ek'sha has exhibited high levels of anxiety when required to enter cryo-stasis again.

As it is, the vessel drifted powerless through the void of space for nearly thirty years and was marked as lost with all hands by the T'au empire. It was finally rediscovered in 976.M41 when it was picked up on long-range scans by a Demiurg mining vessel. Upon being notified of the find, the T'au empire was quick to respond, bringing the survivors out of cryo-stasis and doing what they could to treat any psychological trauma.
Al'ek'sha's team had survived, for the most part, losing only two members to the malfunction, but these were still the first losses they had suffered from the group that had trained together on N'dras and as such the blow hit them hard. Al'ek'sha himself became even more withdrawn than before, and seldom spoke to anyone outside of his own team; the empire had changed in the 30 years they had been frozen, and he felt out of place around everyone else. When they learned what year it was, and how old they were now, the team adopted the name "The Ancients".

Once the survivors had been medically and psychologically cleared, they were dispatched to join the Great War of Confederation. After having their battle records reviewed, his team was issued with XV25 Stealth Suits and Al'ek'sha himself was promoted to Shas'vre. They served under commander Shadowsun for several years, notably in the K'resh Expansion region, and Al'ek'sha displayed cunning, daring, and skill in equal measure. He would have been fast-tracked for a command position, but his taciturn nature restricted his leadership capabilities. Such qualities only intensified as more of Al'ek'sha's squadmates fell in battle and by the culmination of the Great War of Confederation. Shas'ui N'dras Nim'veras was the only other member of the original N'dras Ancients to survive the campaign, and both she and Al'ek'sha were ear-marked for induction into the Ghostkeel project.

They were shipped directly to N'dras from the warzone, but despite it being the place of his birth, it hardly felt like returning home to Al'ek'sha. If the empire as a whole felt strange thirty years later, N'dras was completely alien. He had been told that the sept had been abandoned, but that had not prepared Al'ek'sha for the reality of returning to find his home abandoned. He could not help but think back to the Craftworld of She’enshar and how it had given him the same empty, lifeless feeling that his home now exuded.
The Ghostkeel project was top secret, and so for once, Al'ek'sha's silence served him well. He said little, beyond giving technical reports on the suits performance and suggesting possible improvements and general feedback to the earth caste engineers overseeing the prototypes. Nevertheless, over time he gradually developed a relationship with the Fio in charge of his division, Fio'O Fal'shia Bentu'Caor, one of the lead designers of the Ghostkeel battlesuit. Al'ek'sha eventually came to count Bentu'Caor as a friend, the only friend he had ever made who was not from N'dras. When Al'ek'sha and Nim'veras discovered that they might be dispatched to different warzones, they asked for Bentu'caor to modify their suits' AI to speak with the voice of their teammate so that they could at least have something familiar by their side in this strange future. Bentwasaor wsa more than happy to comply, and the adjustments were made scant days before the initial deployment of the Ghostkeel in black ops engagements in the Third Sphere Expansion.

Al'ek'sha was assigned to the Zeist campaign, while Nim'veras was despatched as part of the ambitious Typha IV campaign. His deployments were carried out flawlessly, and the Ghostkeel's potential was proven on multiple occasions.

Following the Zeist campaign, Al'ek'sha was sent to the Imperial world of Agrellan to carry out strikes deep behind enemy lines with several other pilots. Such strikes would cripple Imperial supply chains and command networks in preparation for the primary T'au assault on Agrellan hive. However after the conquest of Mu'gulath Bay, Aun'el Jed'ai convinced Al'ek'sha to join Shas'O Kel'var's Exploration force for reasons known only to the ethereal and Al'ek'sha himself. As such, the Shas'vre was not present of Prefectia when the Ghostkeel was officially unveiled.

As an individual, Al'ek'sha is reserved, taciturn, and highly intelligent. He has little patience for fools and seldom speaks, preferring the company of his suit's AI and its reminder of his old friends rather than any of his new companions.

NAME: Shas'la Vior'la Er'yas

KNOWN ALIASES: "Distant Death"

SPECIES: Tau

RANK: 'La

CASTE: Shas (Fire)

SEX: Male

AFFILIATION: T'au Empire

DATE OF BIRTH: 987.M41

PLACE OF BIRTH: Vior'la

KNOWN KIN:
Shas'vre Vior'la Xar'vior - Mother
Sahs'vre Vior'la - Ko'lar
Shas'ui Vior'la Siral'shi - Sister (elder)

KNOWN AFFILIATES:
Shas'vre Tau'n Ekil'nar - The overall commander of the reconnaissance and infiltration elements of the cadre after Kel'var himself, Ekil'nar views Er'yas as potential protege and seeks to encourage the young sniper to hone his skills and groom him for potential leadership and has seen fit to include him for command briefings, claiming that he has a keen eye and can provide useful input.
Shas'ui Elsy'eir Ri'thos - Er'yas immediate commanding officer, Ri'thos is the Shas'ui of the Pathfinder team the sniper serves with. Ri'thos views Er'yas as young and arrogant due to his family and his skill. WHile he acknowledges the young Tau's ability, he fears that he is immature and prone to making rash decisions. He strongly disagrees with the preferential treatment Ekil'nar shows the sniper, and believes that such behaviour only encourages dangerous individualism, and directly contradicts the values of the Tau'va.
Shas'O Kel'shan Xauk'Fi'rios Kel'var - Normally a Shas'O would not directly interact with the Shas'la of his command, simply due to logistical issues, but after Ekil'nar and Ri'thos both mentioned the sniper by name, and for drastically different reasons, Kel'var decided to investigate personally. For now, he has not cast his vote for either side, allowing Er'yas to sit in on briefings and considering the advice he is able to provide. While he acknowledges his potential, Kel'var shares Ri'thos' reservations about the young Tau's character. He does not believe it is wise to quash potential, however, for even among the collective Greater Good, warriors are still honoured for their contribution and sacrifice, something evidenced by the title of a battlesuit as "The Mantle of the Hero" and a mark of honour and respect.
For now, Kel'var has placated his two sub-commanders, and has resolved himself to keep a careful eye on Er'yas and intervene should things threaten to get out of hand.

COMMENDATIONS: Er'yas was responsible for dealing the killing blow with his rail rifle to the strategic high commander of an Imperial occupation force during a deep infiltration mission.

NOTABLE BIOGRAPHIC EVENTS:
987.M41 - Born on Vior'la
992.M41 - Enrolled at the Mont'yr Battle Dome
994.M41 - Marked out for specialised Pathfinder training
996.M41 - Graduated from the Mont'yr Battle Dome
997.M41 - Infiltration and reconnaissance missions in the Ksi'm'yen expansion
999.M41 - Distinguished during the Fi'rios campaign
999.M41 - Attached to Shas'O Kel'var's Exploratory Cadre

PERSONAL BIO:
Er'yas comes from a family known for displaying martial prowess, even amongst Vior'lans. For the past six generations, every member of his family has attained the rank of at least Shas'vre, with many advancing even higher. There was understandably pressure on Er'yas to perform well when he enrolled in the Mont'yr battle dome itself and all expected that he would prove himself a capable fire warrior, exhibiting the traditional values of the Shas'Ken'to and eventually graduating to take his place on the line with discipline and stoic courage.

It came as a slight surprise then, when Er'yas showed a predilection for Pathfinder training, demonstrating great skill with reconnaissance and infiltration, as well as uncanny accuracy as a sniper. While some members of his family were disappointed that he was not following in their established traditional role as line troopers, such was Er'yas skill, that even the influence of senior fire caste officials - friends and relatives of his family - was unable to sway the decision of his instructors who firmly held to the notion that their job was to train Er'yas and equip him with the skills that would allow him to most benefit the Tau'va, and in their minds, he would serve far more effectively as a Pathfinder than as a Fire Warrior or Breacher.

For his part, Er'yas seemed to enjoy this act of rebellion and departure from tradition, something that led to tension between him and his family, particularly his elder sister. HIs instructors too noticed Er'yas independent streak, calling him "willful" and "arrogant" but despite these perceived character flaws, they could not deny his proficiency, and he graduated from the academy alongside the rest of the cadets, just in time to be shipped out with the 3rd Sphere Expansion Fleet.

Er'yas first saw engaged in full scare war on the planet of Ksi'm'yen where he served as part of the forward recon elements of the invasion force. He maintained a cool head under pressure, but his record does show altercations with his teammates and C.O. although they are more footnotes in a report than anything drastic. It was during the subsequent Fi'rios campaign that Er'yas distinguished himself by sniping the high command officer of an Imperial response force on an outer world in the Fi'rios system.

With the restructuring of many elements of the Third Sphere Expansion to accommodate for losses suffered, Er'yas has been assigned to Kel'var's cadre, and has fallen under the command of Shas'vre Tau'n Ekil'nar and Shas'ui Elsy'eir Ri'thos, causing tension between the two officers based on their perception of the young Shas'la.
