Vespids. The unsung heroes.

In 7th edition i didnt touch vespids as they were a seriously underperforming unit in my opinion but, now in 8th edition i have used them in almost every game to a great effect. I use 2 squads of 6 (each with a strain leader) the deep strike ability to jump them down just in range with their guns, i have found they delete units that are MEQ and TEQ equivalent. The -2 to ap is very valuable to this infantry unit. The fly key word and 14" move makes them ultra mobile. And they make great meat shields for the QFC.

How have you guys found their performance?

I have found them pretty sweet but squishy. Deep-strike in and murder a squad of marines but then die in the subsequent shooting phase. Would be nice if they got a -1 to hit for their mobility or something in the new codex.

I recently played against a black templar grey knights combo. I was tabled on turn 6, if game ended at 5 i would have one by points.

Over 2 turns my vespids were able to kill 1 5 man paladin unit and 1 10 man black templar unit (not exactly sure what but basic space marines.) Before they were killed (on a bad morale roll for me.) I think the vespids survived because my QFCs (2 of them) drew most of his attention. (Since between the pair they killed 2 dreadnaughts and 2 predators.) I was rolling extremely good on my saves. The QFCs Both died on combat with voldus.

So by having other nasty things to draw attention i think they stop being so squishy.

I think they're neat as a substitute for beachers in any situation where having the additional troop slots/deployment drops is not essential. The 14'' mobility + AP on them + less temperamental range makes them a lot more attractive. I think what puts them low on my bucket list is that I've never liked the Vespid model much. There's some great older photos on ATT of vespids being kit-bashed with breachers and jetpacks. Assuming vespid stay where they are when the codex drops, I'd love to make a squad in that style. Airborne infantry with MEQ killing weapons? Yes please.

Vespid are very good in 8th. I wrote up an article on them at viewtopic.php?f=52&t=25885

They do exactly what you want Fast Attack to do; fast moving, decent level of threat, not the most durable thing in the army.

I read your article. I was unaware they benifited from markerlights or savior protocols. Just like how they don't have the for the greater good rule. Or am i wrong there aswell?

Vespid can't benefit from savior afaik since savior can only be done for the same sept, but I think every model in Tau army benefits from markers

Spoiler!
They can use Saviour protocols.
The protocol is dependent on "T'au Empire Infantry or Battlesuit"

Vespids do have the same Faction Keyword being T'au Empire and keyword infantry, so it's possible.

As Arka pointed out, above information in the spoiler is wrong, as overwritten by the FAQ.

The same for markerlights, it's dependent on the faction keyword of T'au Empire.

It does in fact say <SEPT> for Savior Protocols though, so it's locked to only <SEPT> infantry and batlesuits. Markerlights, however, interact with the broad T'AU EMPIRE keyword, so Vespids can use that.

Ah right.. I only checked the index, did not notice the <SEPT> was added in the FAQ.
Guess it's never been necessary as I haven't used auxiliaries or different septs in a battle yet :P

I'll retract my comment, as I was clearly wrong.

Yeah Vespids do benefit from ML as they have the "T'au Empire" keyword and the ML is applicable for every "T'au Empire" keyword bearing unit

Edit: wow.. I had this open way too long.. to reply to this.. never mind me :) Carry on!

Now knowing that vespids benifit from marker lights i think makes them a lot better. I had always played other wise. And i thought it was 1 of there downfalls. Thankyou guys for pointing this out.

Correct. That article was written directly from the Index and has been a bit out of date since the FAQ came out.

I plan to update it with the new codex and then tweak it for the post-codex FAQ. It should then be in a good state for quite a while.

No pressure, was simply pointing out the misinterpretation to OP

good job on the article, though seeing such a big article about them makes me sad that since I started Tau in 4th they didn't get any new unit or model update (to be honest the models looked pretty bad to me even back in 4th)

Fingers crossed for new vespid box along with two more units for racial diversity :)

I’ve got a lot of love for vespid. They’re so good in 8th. I believe they share a role with breachers for taking units off of an objective.
Here’s a link to my converted vespids.

I will give these a shot in my next game. I had just not paid them any attention.

Admittedly I'm somewhat tired of my Fast Attack slots being eaten up so fast though.

I feel like half my army is fast attack.

I've been wanting to play a deepstrike blob with a Y'varha and Vespid escort.
