Darkstrider question

Darkstrider has the special rule "fighting retreat", it mentions consolidate D6" after overwatch, but before a charge is made at darkstrider (& unit) is made.

Does this mean if a unit is going to charge Darkstriders unit, you fire overwatch, now roll a D6", move the result, to get the hell out of there, then the enemy unit rolls to charge (which is much harder because Darkstriders unit is now farther away)

Is this right?

If it is, attaching him to some breachers helps their survival right?

I don't understand how this is even a question. "After Overwatch" is pretty clear imo. :D

Don't expect too much of it though. It may save you from the rare charge when your opponent goes for a lucky roll but usually the enemy is close enough to not care about an additional 3.5" (average roll of a d6). Having Breacher with Scout/Outflank and -1T for the target is much more interesting. ;)

That sounds accurate.

It can be useful, but doesn't always work.
An enemy DS unit can just land beside the squad a couple of inches away and you can always just roll a 1 when they charge the following turn.

It's a nice bonus but more often than not the unit tracking you down will catch up if they need too. It's more like a Hail Mary play than a tried and true useful tactic.

Original question: yes, you can fire Overwatch and then run D6" in any direction.

Guys above are right that a simple 3.5" longer charge distance isn't that amazing in itself. However, there are a number of other tricks you can use here. For example, it specifically says that our special move is a Consolidation - and BRB p53 states that units making a consolidation move are not slowed by difficult terrain. You know who is slowed by difficult terrain though? Charging units, that's who! They get a -2" to their total roll. A unit charging through difficult terrain is also forced to fight at initiative 1 - for the first time in history, Tau will strike first in melee!

Another thing you can do is to walk behind obstacles. It is not possible to charge through friendly units or enemy units that aren't being charged. If the unit charging you is on large bases, you can retreat your tiny models through narrow passages that larger models cannot fit through and suddenly he cannot reach you at all.

Furthermore, maybe your Overwatch was extremely successful and wiped most of his unit, so that your opponent no longer wants to complete the charge (because his unit is now likely to get wiped out). Then you can consolidate towards him, making it more likely he will succeed and die.

Sorry but I haven't laughed that good in a while. :D

I've always liked the potential applications of Fighting Retreat and thought it would have made a superior army wide rule to Supporting Fire.

You can use it to deny a charge. You can use it to prevent a multi-classing. You can use it to force an enemy into a charge they don't want to succeed anymore.

One of my favourites is 'dragging' a distraction charge into the way of the main charge when an opponent tries to use a softer unit to suck up overwatch for his big nasty deathstar.
