Tyranids are grouped into Synapse creatures and non synapse creatures. The fluff explanation of this is that Synapse creatures link the Tyranids to the Hive Mind which is the "consciousness" of the tyranid race. When they're in synapse, they behave accordingly, when they're not in synapse they have a chance to behave accordingly or they fall into their instinctive behaviour.

Off the top of my head, the synapse creatures are Hive Tyrants, Tervigons, Trygon Primes, Tyranid Warriors, Tyranid Shrikes, Zoanthropes, Malanthropes, and Malenceptors. There might be another. Oh, and Tyranid Primes.

Everything else in the codex must be within 12" of a synapse creature or take a leadership test and possibly roll for instinctive behaviour. If they are outside of synapse range at the beginning of the movement phase, they take the test. There should be an instinctive behaviour table in the codex. I think it's in a funny place, before the unit descriptions if I recall. The appropriate table used is listed under each units data sheet entry.

When in synapse, all tyranids are fearless and act normally.

Genestealers are the only creatures in the codex who are not synapse creatures and can function on their own, regardless of they synapse coverage.

Is that sufficient?

I'd go for pulse rifle fire warriors over breachers, the extra range is worth it over the gain in AP.

I wouldn't bother with drones for pathfinders, just keep them cheap, put them in cover and maybe give them a shas'ui for the LD bonus.

Can I ask what points level you are planning to play at?

I assume you meant you have the 'Start Collecting' box + a box of Pathfinders? Which brings you to about 500pts?

TAU CAD 436pts

Ethereal, Hover Drone, Recon Armour & Honour Blade (65)
5 Strike Team, DS8 (55)
5 Strike Team (50) - you only get 1 turret right?
XV8, dual Fusion (52)
2 x XV8, Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod (104)
5 Pathfinders (55)
5 Pathfinders (55)

Which leaves you 64 points for drones/upgrades, however...

The Tyranid player can barely afford all the things you've mentioned so far:

Tyranid CAD 490

Deathleaper (130)
2 x 10 Hormagaunts (50) (100)
Carnifex 120
Mawloc 140

Even with no upgrades at all, he can only just fit it in & to be honest, if they are forcing you to play over 500 points with the collection you have, IMO they are being 'That Guy'!

The Tyranid player isn't being that guy. They weren't even aware of synapse until I explained it.

This is legitimate learning about the game.

As, long as they both have 500pt lists I completely agree!

Sometimes you just play with the models you have because it's the closest you can get to even.

But, since they both clearly have enough for 500pts each, they may as well play that?

I appreciate I may have been mistaken, it's just it sounded like the Tyranid player has access to a lot more models & cash & was up against a guy with only a starter box & was still bringing all his tricks.

If both players are newbro's, then it's all fine! I just didn't want the Tau player getting dragged into higher point battles needlessly.

I remember when I used to play a guy @ 750pts, when I only really had 500 & made the rest in upgrades & wargear etc.

It was pointless, I lost bad & fast, as soon as we both dropped back to 500 points, games became much more competative & fun.

My friend has been doing this for years and he was not aware of the full impact of some of his new rules as he has not actually played in years, but he has got many more troops than me. Oh, I now have a stealth suit team as well...

I'm surprised your friend didn't know about synapse then. It's been around for years.
