[7th] Detachments,Formations,Factions & Allies

Over the last several months the Tau have gained access to a huge number of new Detachments & Formations. There seems to be a variety of questions regarding how these structures work and interact with each other and other elements of the game so I've put this article together for submission to the Academy in an attempt to make life easier for new and old players alike.

I'm not attempting to repeat all the rules but rather draw them together, highlight their interactions and give people the direct references to find further information if they desire.

Feedback and input welcome! [PM]

Factions
Factions represent the different groups and ideologies in the 40k universe. There is a list of Factions in the BRB (p.118) but typically the existence of a Codex indicates a Faction, ie: “Codex: Tau Empire” contains datasheets for the Tau Empire. Some publications have datasheets in them for several Factions, ie: “War Zone Damocles Kauyon” has both Tau Empire and Space Marine datasheets in it.

The way you can tell a unit’s Faction is by the symbol at the top of its datasheet.

This is the symbol of the Tau Empire Faction
Image

This is the symbol of the Space Marines Faction
Image

Faction applies regardless of how you choose your army. It’s a function of the unit’s datasheet.

A units Faction is relevant when talking about Allies (BRB p.126) and some Detachments have specific requirements around Faction (e.g: Combined Arms Detachment and Allied Detachment – BRB p.122).

Allies
The rules for Allies (BRB p.126) tell us how closely units from different Factions, in the same army, can work together on the table top. These rules are in effect regardless of how your units ended up in the same army. This means that regardless of the Detachments or Formations making up your army or it being Battle-forged or Unbound your units are subject to the Allies rules.

Units and Battlefield roles
All units have a Battlefield Role (BRB p.119) that describes their function in an army. The Battlefield Role is used by some Special Rules to determine which units they get applied to.
It is also used by some Detachments to fit units into its Force Organisation Chart.

Detachments
Why should I care about Detachments?
Short answer: you don’t have to. You can just take an Unbound army; put whatever units you like in it up to your points value, and enjoy a game. Just remember you still have to care about the Allies rules for units from different Factions ;-)

Long answer: if your army is completely made up of Detachments then it is Battle-forged and a Battle-forged army allows each Detachment to grant its Command Benefits to the units that make it up.
In order for your army to be Battle-forged it must comply with the following:
  • All units must be part of a Detachment
  • A unit can only be part of one Detachment

You can include any number of Detachments in a Battle-forged army.

Unbound armies cannot make use of and do not get any of the benefits of Detachments.

Examples:
Based on the models I have I choose to take a Combined Arms Detachment (BRB p.122).
My army looks like this:
CAD
|-Commander (HQ)
|-Ethereal (HQ)
|-Strike Team (Troops)
|-Strike Team (Troops)

The Units in this Detachment receive the Command Benefits; Ideal Mission Commander & Objective Secured.

If I wanted to add a Cadre Fireblade to this army I would need to add an additional CAD which would require another two units of troops as well to meet the minimum requirements. I could not use an Allied Detachment (BRB p.122) as that has a requirement that it’s units be from a different Faction to my Primary Detachment ie: I can’t take a Tau CAD and a Tau Allied Detachment as my army.

I could use the Allied Detachment to take some Necrons in my army though and it could look like this:
CAD
|-Commander (HQ)
|-Ethereal (HQ)
|-Strike Team (Troops)
|-Strike Team (Troops)

Allied Detachment
|-Cryptek (HQ)
|-Warriors (Troops)

The Units in the CAD receive the Command Benefits; Ideal Mission Commander & Objective Secured. The Units in the Allied Detachment receive Objective Secured.

Formations
Formations are special types of Detachments (BRB p.121). They have their own datasheets that have this symbol on them
Image

They come with some extra rules:
  • Formations are Detachments, so you can take them in an army and still be Battle-forged.
  • Formations can be taken as part of an Unbound army.
  • Formations always grant their Special Rules to the Units that make them up, even in an Unbound army.

Examples:
My army looks like this:
CAD
|-Commander (HQ)
|-Ethereal (HQ)
|-Strike Team (Troops)
|-Strike Team (Troops)

Optimised Stealth Cadre (Formation)
|-XV95 Ghostkeel Battlesuits (Elite)
|-XV25 Stealth Battlesuits (Elite)
|-XV25 Stealth Battlesuits (Elite)

As Formations are a special form of Detachment, and all the units in my army are in a Detachment it’s a Battleforged army. Units in the CAD get to enjoy their Command Benefits and as the OSC is a Formation, its units always get their Special Rules.

If I wanted to add a Cadre Fireblade in my army would look like this:

-Commander (HQ)
-Ethereal (HQ)
-Cadre Fireblade (HQ)
-Strike Team (Troops)
-Strike Team (Troops)

Optimised Stealth Cadre (Formation)
|-XV95 Ghostkeel Battlesuits (Elite)
|-XV25 Stealth Battlesuits (Elite)
|-XV25 Stealth Battlesuits (Elite)

As there is no space for the Cadre Fireblade in the CAD and no option to add him to the OSC Formation, I have to use the Unbound method to create my army. The CAD structure disappears and Units from it no longer get any Command Benefits. However, I can take Formations as part of an Unbound army and units in it always get their Special Rules, therefore the units in the OSC still get “The Wall of Mirrors”.

Farsight Enclaves rules

“If you wish, you can choose to say that any Detachment or Formation in your army is from the Farsight Enclaves” (Codex Supplement: Farsight Enclaves p.52).

Making this decision adds a set of Special Rules to your Formation or Detachment. Specifically:
  • Battlesuit Spearhead
  • Ork Hunters
  • Ta’lissera Bond
  • Signature Systems
  • Warlord Traits

Its worth pointing out that Farsight Enclaves do not have their own Faction, they are still Tau. This means you cannot take them as part of an Allied Detachment (BRB p.122) next to another Tau Detachment that is your Primary Detachment.

For example:
I choose to take a Combined Arms Detachment and that it is from the Farsight Enclaves.
My army looks like this:
CAD (FSE Detachment)
|-Commander (HQ)
|-Ethereal (HQ)
|-Strike Team (Troops)
|-Strike Team (Troops)

Not only do the Units gain their usual Command Benefits: Ideal Mission Commander & Objective Secured they also get the FSE Special Rules: Battlesuit Spearhead, Ork Hunters, Ta’lissera Bond, access to different Signature Systems and Warlord Traits.

If I wanted to add my OSC Formation but not make them from Farsight Enclaves my army would look like this:
CAD (FSE Detachment)
|-Commander (HQ)
|-Ethereal (HQ)
|-Strike Team (Troops)
|-Strike Team (Troops)

Optimised Stealth Cadre (Formation)
|-XV95 Ghostkeel Battlesuits (Elite)
|-XV25 Stealth Battlesuits (Elite)
|-XV25 Stealth Battlesuits (Elite)

The CAD would get all the benefits listed in the previous example and the OSC would only get its Special Rule “The Wall of Mirrors”.

I could also take an army made up of just one Formation and make it FSE.

Retaliation Cadre (FSE Formation)
|-Commander
|-Broadsides
|-Crisis Battlesuits
|-Crisis Battlesuits
|-Crisis Battlesuits
|-Riptide Battlesuits

All the Units in this Formation would get the Special Rules; Relentless, Low Altitude Deployment, Drop Zone Clear, Battlesuit Spearhead, Ork Hunters, Ta’lissera Bond, access to different Signature Systems and Warlord Traits.

The Funky Stuff
Warning! This section is when we start to deal with exceptions to the rules already discussed.

So what about the “Decurion style” Detachments? Where did the reference come from and why are they different?
The Necron Decurion Detachment was the first Detachment published that had a force organisation chart made up of both Formations and Units, rather than just requiring a certain number of Units in each Battle field role. It was the first of its type so as other Codices were updated for 7th Edition and other Factions got their own similar Detachments, they were collectively referred to as the “Decurion style” Detachments.

Things that make the “Decurion style” Detachments different:
  • Units in them are allowed to be part of two Detachments at once and receive Command Benefits and Special Rules from both.
  • If your Warlord is part of a Formation or Army List Entry in the “Decurion style” Detachment then that entire Detachment is your Primary Detachment.

The Tau Empire currently have two of these style of Detachments:
  • Hunter Contingent (Codex: Tau Empire p.72)
  • Dawn Blade Contingent (Codex Supplement: Farsight Enclaves p.54)

See Codex: Tau Empire p.73 for an example of taking a Hunter Contingent and CAD together.
See Codex Supplement: Farsight Enclaves p.55 for an example of taking a Dawn Blade Contingent and CAD together.

Another example:
I take a Hunter Contingent that looks like this:
Hunter Contingent
|-Hunter Cadre (Formation)
| |-Commander
| |-Strike Team
| |-Strike Team
| |-Strike Team
| |-XV8 Crisis Battlesuits
| |-Pathfinder Team
| |-XV88 Broadside Battlesuits
|
|-Drones

The Units inside the Hunter Cadre gain the benefits of two Detachments, the Hunter Contingent & the Hunter Cadre Formation and the Drone Unit only gains benefits from one, the Hunter Contingent.

Formation Special Rules and characters joining units?
The official 40k Rulebook FAQ has spelt out how Special Rules from the Formation work when Independant Characters join a unit.
Formation based Special Rules only get transferred to a joining character if the rule explicitly allows for it (for example Stealth or Stubborn) otherwise joining characters do not gain any special rules from the Formation.

Edit history:
1. Updated paragraph on Formation Special Rules & moved FSE section into this post

Moderators: I've broken this into several posts as I hope it will undergo much editing and revising and this should make managing it easier.

Everyone: Constructive feedback welcome by [PM]. I would ask that people quote or reference relevant rules where ever possible. I'd like to keep this factual.

Great job. Now if we can just fill in the gaps on the various formations and detachments we will have some serious content.

For my very minor contribution I have the beginnings of a tactica for the Drone Net VX1-0 at viewtopic.php?f=52&t=24092 which I think is complete enough to be worth linking to.

My apologies Das'Kyman! If there's anything you've already worked on and would like to see added to whats here please let me know.

Thank you for the suggestion Jochmann. I've expanded this post to give a lot more detail although I haven't gone down to the "general boni" level yet. I'll do it when I get some more spare time. And I will endeavour to live up to the new rank!

nic I've included your tactica post.

I've updated the third and fourth posts with an additional formation and the official 40k Rules FAQ. Happy to give it some time for peer review otherwise, could an admin reflect these changes into the Academy Article here?

There was some discussion regarding how much to put into this article in this thread. I'm inclined to keep it to "core" game content and leave Death from the Skies and Stronghold Assault to folks who would like to write dedicated articles on it (I have the rules but haven't played any games of either).
